The former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga is scheduled to restart on August 1st
The former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, now part of AGR automotive group together with St. Petersburg site of Hyundai, is planned to be restarted from August 1, 2024, the trade union organization of the enterprise reported. At the first stage, the plant will employ more than 500 workers in three shifts. If the restart project develops well, the number of employees at the plant will be significantly increased by November 2024.
It is not specified what brands and models of cars will be produced at the Kaluga assembly line, the Interfax news agency writes. The plans to restart the former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga were previously reported by Governor of Kaluga Region Vladislav Shapsha.
According to him, negotiations of the new owner of enterprise with a potential industrial partner are at the final stage. Recall, in May 2023, the auto concern Volkswagen completed the sale of its Russian assets, including the car plant in Kaluga, to the company Art Finance. Russian authorities agreed the deal at a price of up to 125 million euros without a buy-back option. The plant has a maximum production capacity of 225,000 cars per year.
Recently, the plant in Kaluga produced three models: Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid softbacks. In March 2022, local production and import of Volkswagen and Skoda cars to our country were stopped.
