Do you consider the 3,950-ton full-load Kilo 3 class a coastal submarine?
If you look at the displacement of most conventional submarines, will they all be coastal, including the Japanese ones?

Instead of what you think, the Kilo class proves every day that they are truly blue-water submarines.

Not true blue water sub kid in open oceans it has very very limited endurance at open oceans

So if we follow the approach of evaluating only nuclear-powered submarines, they're for blue waters!

Proportionally Russian SSBNs are more modern than Ohio class.

Even the Delta 4s were considered formidable quiet platforms.

Of course the Russian economy can't support many boats.

Also USN and Russian Navy missions are different.

Non-nuclear Russian boats ARE a factor.

Also, one can argue the Russians have done good job revamping their fleet.

Putin allocating serious resources to their nuclear sub plans.

No I'm serious, no AIP system to recharge its batteries only snorkel it has hence easy for detection/target for MPA aircraft, at best I would say kilo is green water sub

Also, diesel powered subs are much quieter than nuclear powered subs.
