SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A group of eight South Korean students were detained Tuesday for allegedly breaking into a United States air base while shouting anti-U.S. slogans, South Korean authorities said.

U.S. military personnel detained the four male and four female students after they allegedly entered Osan Air Base near the capital Seoul. They were later transferred to the custody of South Korean authorities, police said.

The students were being investigated under a law protecting military installations in South Korea, according to police, who said they all had invoked their right to remain silent during questioning.

The Korean Progressive University Student Union said in a statement on Facebook that those detained were members who were trying to protest what it called the U.S. military’s opposition to a South Korean semiconductor cluster project.

problems with local women, news common in Japanese bases too.

but I never heard something similar in European bases, maybe here local women are more willing to hang out with American troops , what is exactly what I've heard.

European bases are far stricter in terms of off base access. Most US bases like Rammstein are closed off communities, they don't mingle with the locals.

My friend from Germany told me locals never go anywhere near that base or the vicinity.

My friend from Germany told me locals never go anywhere near that base or the vicinity.

Likewise for US soldiers inside the base. My friend told me, "It's pretty strict, we literally have no access to outside world here!".

Daejinyeon stages protest visit to Osan Air Base... Condemning the "U.S. 7th Air Force for Picking a Fight over Honam Semiconductor."​

On the morning of the 4th, eight members of the Korean University Students' Progressive Union (Daejinyeon) visited the U.S. 7th Air Force Command stationed at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province to protest.

University students ran into Osan Air Base shouting slogans while holding banners and letters of protest that read, “Let’s crush the U.S. 7th Air Force for causing trouble for Honam Semiconductor!” and “Let’s break through the U.S. 7th Air Force’s obstruction and make Honam Semiconductor a success!”

U.S. soldiers stationed at the base violently subdued university students. They knocked the students to the ground, climbed on top of them, and pinned them down with their knees and elbows.

Afterwards, the university students were transferred to the Korean police, and all eight of them were taken to Pyeongtaek Police Station. During the arrest process, the police even handcuffed the students' wrists.

Even while being taken away, the college students continued to voice their protests against the U.S. 7th Air Force by shouting slogans.

On the 10th of last month, the U.S. 7th Air Force exerted pressure regarding the construction of the Honam Semiconductor Industrial Complex, stating that "there are significant military interests at Gwangju Base" and demanding that the site of the Gwangju military airport not be used for the semiconductor industrial complex. On the 28th of the same month, white phosphorus, a dangerous toxic substance, leaked from Osan Air Base, where the U.S. 7th Air Force is stationed.

Regarding the university students' protest visit, he stated, “It is a voice of the legitimate exercise of sovereignty against the U.S. Forces Korea, which infringes upon the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea and threatens its security.”

The Korean University Students' Progressive Union plans to continue one-person protests and press conferences in front of the Pyeongtaek Police Station to demand the release of the university students.

That’s because not all speak Putonghua. That’s something you only learn in schools. In Malaysia or Thailand or Indonesia it’s common to speak dialects.

Dialects I think are a home conversational thing. At school, they must teach more standardized version, no? It's probably these Chinese Malaysians opted out of Mandarin learning because I think I have never seen any Singaporean Chinese cannot speak Mandarin.
