Türkiye and the Balkans | News & Discussion

It is now completely clear that Turkey does not want stability in the Western Balkans and is once again dreaming of restoring the Ottoman Empire.

This is so strange, I thought Serbia had decent relations, of course there were differences, but this sort of harshness, I haven't seen that from Vucic before.

hehehe, something happened.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić now regrets his accusations against Türkiye yesterday over Kosovo arms deal:Yesterday, I reacted strongly, some would say sharply, maybe too sharply.I will always be a good host to the Turkish President Erdogan… he is the greatest Turkish leader after Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.Türkiye’s behavior is of the utmost importance for the stability of this region. We want the closest relations, the best relations with Türkiye.

This situation is quite embarrassing. I suspect that his frustration is linked to Türkiye's refusal to sell them drones, and it was only after Ankara declined that Vucic opted to approach Israel.

He has been friendly and respectful of Turkey. But the problem is the place he likely uses them is against either Bosnia, Kosovo or Albania, and that is just not acceptable to Turkey for obvious reasons.

Honestly he just needs to come towards some sort of a compromise on Kosovo, maybe do a land swap, where Kosovo gives then the serbian part of Kosovo and they give Kosovo the presevo valley. Simple solution for Kosovo atleast. The issue is that while it solves the Kosovo issues, it might spark something worse in Bosnia.

I am not entirely convinced that Serbia will openly engage in military adventures in its neighboring countries. However, I do think they have malicious intentions to create instability in Bosnia and Kosovo. In my opinion, Vucic's arms race aims to establish a certain level of deterrence to prevent any form of land invasion. After all, there are still thousands of NATO soldiers stationed in Kosovo, and if a war were to erupt, Bosnia would also see troop deployments. People often forget that Serbia is bordering 6 NATO countries (+Albania and Kosovo). Putin's nightmare is Vucic's daily reality.
Therefore, this apprehension regarding invasion is not an unusual conspiracy theory, but rather a widely recognized fact within Serbia.

All in all, we need to be prepared. Belgrad is up to no good.

Serbia has not relinquished its claim on Kosovo and the “Greater Serbia” plan. Even though the military ramp up is defensive, listening to their “analysts” they openly speak about Kosovo, and Bosnia even parts of Croatia..

I think the true threat for Serbia is Hungary and Bulgaria. Even though it appears they are allies, that is all shaky and a relationship of interest and convenience. The other is the change in their military doctrine from 10 tears ago (or so) where they are now including protection of serbs no matter where they live.. so this can be interpreted as a threat to regional countries.

He has no chance against NATO, no he is building for a scenario where EU/NATO doesn't intervene when Republika Srpska tries to breakaway and join Serbia, or to annex Northern Kosovo. He has been agitating and doing hybrid warfare there, pushing the limits so see how far he can go. He has been lobbying the French and they became the first NATO state to sell him weapons, especially offensive weapons.

I assume he is smarter than that. There is no situation in which he won't encounter a united response from NATO and the EU. He is essentially an island surrounded by a NATO sea. I sense that he understands this reality and might attempt to incite trouble in Bosnia and Kosovo from the inside first. An intervention could only happen if he truly thinks that no one will come to support Bosnia or Kosovo, but in what reality does that even make sense? Thus, I think his primary objective is to establish a deterrent if events in Bosnia and Kosovo do not progress in a manner he believes will be advantageous for Serbia. I'm not ruling out the possibility of him making a strategic mistake like attacking one of his neighbours directly but if he does that...well...there's a meme of Serbia like Nokia.

Serbia accused Türkiye of forming an anti-Serbian alliance with Croatia, Kosovo and Albania by providing them military hardware like drones. This was just a couple months ago.

However, they're quite vocal about each Turkish delivery for years:

I have many reasons for not being a fan of Orban, and one of the things I particularly dislike is his close relationship with Vucic and Dodik, often referred to as the 'Trio'. Sadly, Hungary is very openly supportive of Serbian secessionism.

He is a strong ally of Vucic and collaborates with him on various projects throughout the region. In the past, Orban provided Republika Srpska with two loans totaling 210 million Euros. Additionally, he has dispatched anti-terror units to Bosnia without the approval or knowledge of Sarajevo, blatantly ignoring BiH's sovereignty.

The fool from Belgrade thinks he plays a significant role in the region. The Turks appreciate him for his friendly attitude towards us and his assistance within the EU. However, there is a limit that even Ankara will not allow to be crossed.

Oh I don't think he will start it just randomly, he will use the agitation like the BS thats been happening in North Kosovo, he pushes the limit.

The Serbian army came into Kosovo and kidnapped 3 Kosovo police officers. Then there are incidents where he sends guerillas to do attacks.

This is all recent stuff in 2023 and 2024. You see this Drama and you see him building forces, then it seems he is just waiting for opportunity.

Right now, EU is busy with Russia and Trump might straight up decide that he doesn't want to intervene. He has been building support inside the EU as well, getting the Hungarians to support him.

They are doing probing attacks and when the opportunity comes, the Serbians regions will do a breakaway, and he will send in forces to "keep the peace" or "protect serbs" and get Orban to back him, and the rest to stay silent and neutral or atleast gum up any response in the EU.
