Türkiye and the Balkans | News & Discussion

If this was some 15-20 years ago,I'd say they want to take back Kosovo. But with the governments they've had the last 10 years with Vucic,I don't think they're planning anything. Most Serbs I know, are disappointed or fed up with him and his party.

Whats he spending like mad for? there is no conflict on his border and he is landlocked. No they are building up b/c they intend to be the ones to launch something, they see NATO receding over Bosnia and Kosovo with the US moving away and several NATO elements becoming more favorable towards them in the case of France. He is waiting for some sort of opening.

It is critical that Albania enter the EU before Serbia to protect Kosovo interests. Much progress has been made on this front in the last few months, when they decoupled Albania's membership from North Macedonia, which is currently being blocked by the Bulgarians.

Currently, there are significant protests happening in Serbia, but for the most part, the Western media is overlooking them. I can picture Vucic attempting to create a distraction by deploying the military against Bosnia.

On the other hand, Croatia is also upgrading its military. A new alliance has formed that includes Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo, with Bulgaria possibly coming on board.

The whole region is disturbed by Serbia's unnecessarily high spending on new military equipment.

Yeah as much as the sabre rattling in North Kosovo, I think the likelier target is some BS in Bosnia they are planning.

You've been doing the same. Unless you mean that some Kurdish guerillas are worth spending billions in missiles, frigates, submarines, aircraft carriers, aircraft.

Hyperman rushes "no no they are preparing something...grroarr...must stop them! woof woof!"

Relax. Nobody's doing anything.

That is more of a rational reply than hyperman's. Vucic could pull something like that, although I doubt it,but still...he's weird. If he and his friends wanted to stay on power or felt threatened by the people to lynch them....they could pull somehing like that off.

I was going to mention it in the post above,it's not just Serbia, others are buying new equipment and weapons too,but I think it's simply because ever since the late '90s they hadn't bought anything serious to modernize their Armed Forces. Specifically Croatia and Slovenia. The rest,Albania and FYROM only got money they can spend on weapons the last few years. If you saw their equipment from the mid-2000s until a few years ago, you'd be shocked. I'm sure you know their inventories,it was more like a huge police force and militia.

Since we're on the Balkan front, worth mentioning that Romanians are buying one of your new OPVs if I'm not mistaken.

Turkey is surrounded by war, Serbia is not. There is was in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Caucasus, Ukraine etc. The is no conflict on Serbia's borders, and none of Serbia's neighbors is spending. Thus the conclusion is its Serbia that will launch something.

War in Syria is over,it was between weak forces and guerilla groups. You guys say you're already too strong for Iranians so no problem there either. You're ok with the Iraqis, you don't have anything to be afraid of from Armenia,no problem from Lebanon, you keep insisting Israel is far and you can easily crush it,nothing going on with Bulgaria and both Ukraine and Russia are supposed to be in good terms with you. So maybe you wanna launch something yourselves 🤔

Another theory i had was,if Vucic wanted to go pro-West and is afraid of any retaliation from Russia.

I don't think you understood what I wrote, I said Turkey is surrounded by war, it happens that sometimes the conflicts bleed over and expand in the region. Turkey is not fighting Syria or Iraq, its fighting non state actors. The PKK is a significant element in Syria that needs to be dealt with.

Ukraine and Russia could potentially expand, the Caucasus war could expand, if Russia goes into Georgia and Azerbaijan, both of which are important countries to Turkey. Idk why you are pretending to be naeve like the Serbia situation is the same as Turkey.

The feeling I have from the Balkan situation is that Vucic seems to think he has a green light to do some BS in Bosnia or Kosovo, he sees an Atlanticist withdrawal(Traditional US/UK roles diminish) and sees the French and others who are more friendly to him come to power, who would not object if he did something, or might support him.

Balkan countries like the Yugoslavs,Bulgaria,Albania and Romania really needed to modernize their armies. Serbs had been doing it slowly since the mid-2000s,but the others were too late. Croatians,Slovenians,Romanians. And now Albanians and Bulgarians. Although Albanians still have a way smaller budget.

Romanians are afraid of a war with Transnistria and Russia. Hungarians did pretty well, but they hardly count as Balkans anyway :P

Why is a landlocked country buying all this equipment.

Albania needs to step up its diplomacy and its military preparedness. Serbs are either going to start shit in Kosovo or more likely in Bosnia, with Republika Srpska. They are just waiting for the right geopolitical conditions.

Serbia is preparing for another round of wars in the region, especially towards Kosovo and Bosnia. Serbia faces no military threats yet is starting to revamp its military with new equipment especially Rafale jets and air defence systems, this is only pointed towards its unfinished wars in Bosnia and Kosovo.

Personally,I think it's mostly because of the geopolitical trouble the last 5 years. The instability and sudden changes with invasions, wars here and there. Vucic doesn't seem like the type of super patriot,so the only reason to see him starting a war is maybe some excuse to boost his popularity or unite the nation if protests come to the point of him getting chased in the street.

Kosovo has taken delivery of thousands of Turkish-made Skydagger kamikaze drones, arriving three months earlier than expected under a contract signed last December with Turkish defense manufacturer Baykar

Dozens of Kosovo Security Force soldiers have already been trained to operate the drones, which are designed for precision strikes against both moving and stationary targets

-------------------------------------

Skydagger drones operate as first-person view systems, allowing pilots to control them in real-time through video feeds.

The models come equipped with dual camera systems—thermal and daylight—enabling operations in various weather conditions and lighting environments.

Technical specifications indicate the drones can reach speeds of 130 kilometers per hour with a maximum range of 10 kilometers.
