For much of the last 20 years, many people—including myself—were under the impression that Iran was a formidable military power and that a country like the United States would be reluctant to attack it directly.U.S. has greater ability to project power than Israel, sure, but greater ability to project power 10,000km away in a much larger country vs Israel projecting power on its short borders with Lebanon? I don’t think that’s a sound assessment. Certainly not in terms of ability to protect those troops. Nothing from the experience of the U.S. occupation of Iraq or Afghanistan supports your contention that they can protect their troops better than Israel can protect its own troops in small areas of South Lebanon.
Iran’s defence strategy was always asymmetric. Nothing new there. It doesn’t mean the conventional military is degraded, that is the conventional military approach.
And generals don’t make decisions based on public opinion, but the politicians who give the general their orders definitely do.
