Retail sales post solid gain in September, showing a continued strong economy

By Greg Robb Oct. 17, 2024

The numbers: Retail sales increased 0.4% in September, with strength in a broad range of categories that overcame weak gas and auto spending, the U.S. Commerce Department said Wednesday.

Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.3% gain.

In August , retail sales rose 0.1%, unrevised from prior estimates.

Key details: Sales were strong even with a sharp decline in sales at gasoline stations. Car sales were also flat in September. Sales rose 0.5% minus autos.

Excluding autos and gasoline, retail sales rose 0.7% and were up 3.7% over the past year.

Big picture: Upward revisions to government data last month clarified the mystery behind the resilient consumer. Americans have much higher incomes than had been believed, mainly from asset income, said Ali Jaffery economist at CIBC Economics.

Looking ahead: “Real wage growth and underlying demand for goods and services are overshadowing negative sentiment. The economy continues to accelerate thanks to the U.S. consumer, and may improve further as lower fuel prices kick in. Today’s numbers make a recession look even less likely. Santa could be coming to town this year. In fact, he might already be here,” said David Russell, global head of market strategy at TradeStation.

Kamala Harris surges ahead of Donald Trump in early voting

Early voting is underway in key states across the country for the 2024 election

Early voting has kicked off in multiple states across the country with less than three weeks go before Election Day, and Democrats are surging ahead.

More than eight million people have already voted early, either in person or by absentee ballot, according to tracking by TargetSmart.

That includes more than 4.5 million registered Democrats who have cast ballots, significantly more than the 3.1 million registered Republicans. Another 740,000 early voters are not with either party.

It also breaks down to more than 4.4 million women who have already voted compared to more than 3.7 million men.

The data comes as Democrats have been more likely to cast ballots early or by mail in the past, and former President Donald Trump has previously criticized the process.

However, in this campaign, Republican party officials have been pushing GOP voters to cast ballots in any way they can, including taking advantage of early voting options.

Democrats are currently outpacing Republicans when it comes to early and absentee voting in the seven key battleground states that will likely decide the election.

More than 2.6 million ballots have been cast in the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Of those, more than 1.4 million were cast by Democrats while just over 964,000 were cast by Republicans. Another 253,000 unaffiliated voters have also cast ballots in the battleground states.

However, when it comes to the breakdown in each state, the results are mixed.

Republicans currently lead in early and absentee voting in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada, the model shows.

Democrats are ahead in Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In Arizona, the data shows Republicans have cast 87,000 ballots as of Friday while Democrats have cast 67,000 ballots. Another 6,900 unaffiliated voters have also cast ballots. The breakdown between men and women voters was nearly split.

In Georgia, where early in-person voting smashed records when it kicked off this week, more than 292,000 Republicans have cast ballots while 283,000 Democrats have. Some 28,000 unaffiliated voters have also voted already.

The number of women voting early in Georgia has outpaced the number of men by more than 25,000 as of Friday.

Meanwhile, early in-person voting in Michigan kicks off next week, but some 855,000 people have already submitted ballots. Democrats cast 467,000 of them while Republicans have 305,000, the tracking shows.

In Nevada, early in-person voting begins on Saturday, October 19, but the state began mailing ballots earlier this week. More than 8,400 people have voted so far. The breakdown includes more than 5,700 GOP ballots and 2,300 ballots from Democrats.

In North Carolina, mail-in voting has been underway for weeks but early in-person voting is also officially underway.

The state broke records with more than 350,000 people casting ballots on the first day of early in-person voting on Thursday.

According to the data provided by the state, more than 428,000 people have now cast ballots in the state. That includes more than 156,000 Democrats, 142,000 Republicans and more than 127,000 unaffiliated voters who make up the largest percentage of registered voters in the state.

At the same time, more than 669,000 people have voted in the crucial battleground state of Pennsylvania. And when it comes to early voting, Democrats there have surged ahead as well.

More than 461,000 of the ballots already cast in Pennsylvania were by Democrats while Republicans have cast just 193,000 ballots.

Women have cast more than 55 percent of the ballots in the Keystone State so far.

In Wisconsin, early in-person voting kicks of on October 22, but at least 281,000 people have already been able to vote.

Democrats are outpacing Republicans by 112,000 ballots to 53,000.

However, the vast majority of ballots submitted in Wisconsin, more than 115,000, came from voters in the state who are not identified as Democrats or Republicans.

Kamala is going to lose. The polls say so.

will be interesting to see if there will be a peaceful transfer of power after the election

Kamala won't concede I bet. She is Marxist and quotes Karl Marx. Unburdened by what has been.

Trump overcharged Secret Service by 300% for accommodations at his hotels

House oversight committee’s report further called the ex-president’s term ‘world’s greatest get-rich-quick scheme’

George Chidi 18 Oct 2024

Donald Trump billed the government for Secret Service accommodations at his hotels many times over what other guests were charged, particularly foreign dignitaries, according to a report released Friday from Democratic members of the House oversight committee.

Describing the former US president’s term in office as “the world’s greatest get-rich-quick scheme”, the report’s authors referred to documents obtained by subpoenas of the Mazars firm, Trump’s accountants, citing guest logs for Trump International hotel in Washington, DC, between September 2017 and August 2018.

The hotel “charged as much as 300% or more above the authorized government per diem”, for Secret Service hotel rooms, according to the report.

It added: “Not only did former President Trump’s D.C. hotel routinely charge the Secret Service more than the government rate, it frequently charged the Secret Service more than it did other patrons, including members of a foreign royal family and a Chinese business interest.”

Eric Trump has said previously that the Trump organization let Secret Service agents “stay at our properties for free”. But the report calls that assertion into question, noting that the agency was charged “far in excess of approved government per diem rates and even many times the rates charged to hundreds of other patrons—including some of the rooms rented by the Qatari royal family and Chinese business interests—for rooms used by agents protecting members of the Trump family.”

The report follows up investigative reports made when Democrats controlled the House oversight committee. When Republicans took the House majority in 2023, new committee chairman James Comer ended the committee’s lawsuits to obtain records and refused to issue new subpoenas. The report by the committee’s Democratic minority relies on documents obtained earlier. Read more

Trump is more moral than Kamala. Who on earth sits down with a porn host? Yuck!
I don’t know what you are talking about, you seemed to know very little about Howard Stern or his show.

More than 85% of the affluent professionals in Howard Stern's audience are White, and their average household income is $160,000.

From the early 1990s until the late 2016s, Trump made several appearances on the Howard Stern Show. There is a distinction between Kamla Harris participating on his show and Trump. She went there and spoke politics to persuade some of his audience to support her candidacy. Trump, on the other hand, discussed obscene topics, including his daughter.

Harris loses ground with Black voters 3 weeks from Election Day

“Black voters remained overwhelmingly loyal to the Democratic Party, voting 92%-8% for Biden,” Pew Research Poll said in an analysis of the 2020 election.

Notably, Obama received 95% of the Black vote when he first ran for president in 2008. Hillary Clinton received about 91% support in her 2016 campaign against Trump. Harris at 79% support lags behind all three former Democratic presidential candidates.

The Democratic Party strategy to expand their voter base by pandering to illegals is not a good strategy. American voters are desperately looking for someone who looks out for American interests.
In the United States, it is unlawful for noncitizens to participate in federal or state elections. Republicans are making a mountain out of a mole hill. The severe penalties for voting as a noncitizen make it unworthy of a single vote. A conviction can result in deportation, a $10,000 fine, and five years in prison.

Everyone knows that. That is why Democrats are hell bent on fast tracking legalization and naturalization of illegals. And they want the borders relaxed in order to rinse and repeat again and again and again.

I don't like the Republicans either because they have their own set of faults.

Personally, I like Libertarians, but only true libertarians like Ron Paul.

for president, you don't want a "nice guy"

you want someone who'll git-r-dun

Trump will stop the wars and save Gaza and Ukraine

Kamala will (if elected) oversee the complete annexation of Ukraine and the second Nakba.

choose wisely, young padawan.
One can exhibit strength without resorting to ignorance and malevolence.

The current catastrophe in Gaza was exacerbated by Trump's blatantly flawed policy of sellout (casino magnate Sheldon Adelson paid more than $400 million to Trump and Republican Party), which pushed for normalization between Israel and corrupt Arab regimes while ignoring Palestinian rights through the Abrahamic Accords.

Trump will halt funding to Ukraine and force it to accept KGB thugs' terms. The chamberlain's appeasement policy will simply encourage the KGB thug to chase the next target to rebuild his evil empire.

Now, don't try to bring up your elderly age in this discussion. lol
