Remember the Patriot Act and the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security? That's the same time all these fringe idea started.
Not saying that was the direct contribution, but there are direct and indirect effect from that, and little by little, the civil right being strip away, and nobody is caring, I lived in China for over a decade when I was a kid, and what I am seeing the US is increasing like what China did to their citizen, only difference is the ruling party (both side) can't dictate the public media and now we move onto social, which is entirely enclosed and easy to manipulate. Otherwise, if you look closely, the political environment is the same.
