US pushes Vietnam to decouple from Chinese tech, sources say

Sure, you can ask India, Thailand and Philippines, they can replace China manufacturing. nobody stops Trump of doing so.
as for Vietnam it’s unrealistic. and even if. let say we agree. There is only 1 scenario. Trump can stay as president for life. it makes no sense for anyone to close a deal with the US if he goes out of office in 3.5y. we need at least 10-15 years. but in that scenario we would ask the US massive technology and money transfer as compensation.
I believe that in 10 to 15 years, the United States may no longer be Vietnam’s most important market. Therefore, Vietnam’s leaders need to demonstrate foresight — not only to handle the immediate pressures from the U.S., but also to strategically position the country’s national interests for the coming decade.

Trump basically wants Vietnam to remain a sweatshop yet excluded from China led supply chain, how is it even theoretically possible?🤣

Not that exactly
His idea is we move from chinese tech to US tech, chinese supply chain to US supply chain. Trump dreams of US become the new China. is that realitic? I don’t know. I think he is delusional.

Well, Vietnam will get screwed again like Iran.

The US can offer nothing to Vietnam in fact, but keep following its detrimental policy against China will be your own peril.
The United States can provide China threat theory and American weapons to all countries. The policy of the United States is uncertain. This is the difference between the United States and China.

Its funny how Americans try on almost every country to move them away from China. I wish they would do that with Pakistan too - so we can tell them to suck our balls!

No, you have it completely wrong. China has a small high-tech sector, most of which producing items for domestic consumption that China can't import because of restrictions. Most of China's exports are low-tech. They are just cheaper because of Chinese labour practices and economies of scale. Whatever "high-tech" is exported is by companies like Apple, which is anyway based on western tech. So, President Trump doesnt want the US to become the new China. If anything, his policies may help Vietnam become the new China by sanitizing China out of the supply chain.

Pakistan has already proved itself as a double faced ally by sheltering OBL near their West Point and supporting Taliban who were killing American and allied soldiers. The US has no interest in having anything beyond a transactional relationship with Pakistan and has already conceded them to the Chinese camp. There is no appetite to spend more $$$ on Pakistan.

when it comes to industrial know-hows, especially in the lower end, US no longer have much of them left, nor can it provide the upstream materials, Trump is playing the carrot and stick tactic without the carrot

in any case Vietnam is screwed. but it can be a little bit less screwed by siding with China, at the end of day Americans don't eat durians and most Vietnamese workers still have their village homes to fall back to, so the massive unemployment won't be a life threatening problem for the VCP

Lol, you have been sleeping under the rock, a typical American, the following data is already 4 years old, imagine now China high tech exports has grown by leaps and bounds more. Just dreaming you can help Vietnam become another China of manufacturing centre, try to save US first.

"While the exact annual export value of Apple iPhones from China is not publicly available, it's estimated to be a significant portion of China's total smartphone exports, potentially reaching tens of billions of US dollars."

You just proved my point. Most of China's so-called "high tech" exports are companies like Apple exporting their products ( based on Western technology).

I dont consider iphones to be high-tech . The AI chips China is producing domestically are, but they are mostly consumed domestically in applications where NVIDIA chips would have been used but can't be because the US has restricted exports to China. There is no export market for these chips because countries that don't face resrtrictions will prefer to buy Nvidia chips.

Lol, even the largest foreign company Iphones exports only count about tens of billions US dollars, and China's total high tech exports are worth about 1 trillion US dollars. Yeah, all the Chinese EVs such as BYD, solar energy products, wind energy products, nuke reactors, other green energy products, 5 G products, robotics, electronics and other high tech products made in China come from foreign company tech, you must be the biggest American joker, lol. It's laughable that America itself doesn't have much high tech products to export, yet you think Chinese high tech are coming from US, LMAO. By the way, a small note, US only does design on Apple iphones, the rest is manufactured in China.

Thank you for conceding us to the Chinese camp - and I mean it.

And sorry, we were such double faced allies while you were all loyal and credible - like deciding to not siding with India - an existential threat to Pakistan - in every episode ever, or not carrying out any drone attacks killing thousands of innocent Pakistanis.

Trump is a psycho.
the question is just how we can survive the remaining 3.5y with as little damage as possible. the worst case scenario is 0 trades with the US. I don’t see any scenario where we cut off with China. in the last 2,500y even in worst breakdown, Vietnam always reached out to the Chinese.

You clearly don't understand what you're talking about. "Made in Vietnam" doesn't mean only products made by Vietnamese-owned companies. If Chinese companies, for example, produce goods or components inside Vietnam, that still contributes to Vietnam's localization rate. It's not a complicated concept.

The real problem is that the way Vietnam has been operating doesn't truly qualify as "Made in Vietnam". Many Vietnamese companies just take the easy way out, assembling imported parts to make quick money. On top of that, Vietnam is increasingly being used as a transshipment point.

Here's what's ironic. I honestly think the US should slap a 30 to 45 percent tariff on Vietnam. If Chinese companies still want to manufacture here, they will be forced to invest in real local supply chains. And if they don't want to, that's fine too. It's their choice. But either way, Vietnam needs to figure out how to move beyond basic assembly and actually build something sustainable.

Even General Secretary To Lam recently talked about Vietnam's "so-called marvelous socialist manufacturing" after decades of just assembling for companies like Samsung. You should read up on that. Don't stay misinformed or blindly repeat the kind of nonsense pushed by state propaganda or pro-communist voices.

relax bro. I am a bit surprised of your harsh response. I didn’t say anything about products “made in Vietnam” or “made elsewhere”. I only said something of alignment. just a virtual thing.
