For hundreds of years China was on the verge of being destroyed by the Xiong nu and had to give them everything from silver to princesses. China at that time was much weaker than xiong nu forces and did not have hope of defeating them straight up. However China bided its time over centuries and eventually the xiongnu started fighting among themselves and China was able to take advantage and eventually cut the head of the snake and put the Xiong nu in the dustbins of history.

I see similar pattern emerging between China and America. China can not hope to destroy America militarily so it will bide its time for centuries if need be for America to fall demographically, culturally, economically or politically and then put it out of its misery in the final stages.

The Xiongnu Empire extracted resources from Han-dynasty China using a dual strategy of military raids and institutionalized extortion via diplomatic treaties. Because the Xiongnu economy relied on mobile pastoralism, which left them vulnerable to climate crises and resource shortages, the ruling chanyu (supreme leader) turned to China's sedentary, agrarian wealth to stabilize the steppe confederation. [1, 2, 3]

Mechanisms of Resource Extraction

Extraction MethodDescription & DynamicsPrimary Resources Obtained
The Heqin (Harmonious Alliance) SystemFormal treaties enforced through military intimidation. Han emperors provided annual "gifts" to maintain peace and prevent devastating invasions.Silk, grain (millet/rice), wine, bullion, and manufactured goods.
Frontier Raiding & WarDirect, seasonal cross-border pillaging of the Yellow River basin. Used as primary economic leveraging when treaties lapsed or payments delayed.Livestock, agricultural crops, and human labor (captives).
Monopolized Border MarketsEnforced trade outposts along the Great Wall frontier where the Xiongnu traded steppe commodities under favorable terms.Iron tools, copper, luxury textiles, and specialized Chinese craftsmanship.

The Strategic Value of Chinese Goods
    • Political Legitimacy & Redistribution: The Xiongnu state was structurally loose, composed of a multi-ethnic coalition of various nomadic tribes. The chanyu did not keep the extracted Chinese luxury goods; instead, he redistributed them to subordinate elites to buy their political loyalty and bind the confederation together. [1, 2]
    • The Silk Economy: Chinese silk was treated as a premium currency. It acted as a luxury status symbol displaying the chanyu's unique access to foreign wealth, and as a global trade commodity. The Xiongnu traded this silk to Western intermediaries, injecting it directly into the early Silk Road networks reaching as far as Rome. [1, 2]
    • Labor Exploitation: Captured Chinese peasants and artisans were relocated to settled enclaves within the steppe. They built administrative centers, introduced metallurgy, and farmed local plots to help insulate the Xiongnu from extreme steppe droughts and winter crises. [1, 2]
Ultimately, this extractive model meant that the Xiongnu political apparatus was highly dependent on China's baseline wealth. When Han Emperor Wu aggressively retaliated and cut off the flow of tribute and border trade, the internal redistributive network collapsed, triggering civil wars that fractured the Xiongnu Empire. [1, 2, 3]

Are you looking at this topic from a specific angle, such as its archaeological evidence (like burial tombs), the political structure of the nomadic state, or the Han dynasty's military retaliation?

From the 10th century BCE to the 7th century BCE, the armies of the Rong and Di were stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century BCE, the armies of the Xiongnu were stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 2nd century CE to the 4th century CE, the armies of the Xianbei were stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 5th to the 6th century AD, the Rouran army was stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

In the 7th century AD, the Turk army was stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

In the 8th century AD, the Uighur army was stronger than China’s. Yet we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 9th to the 11th century AD, the Khitan army was stronger than China’s. But we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 12th to the 13th century, the Jurchen army was stronger than China’s. But we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 13th century BCE to the 14th century, the Mongol army was stronger than China’s. But we ultimately wiped out that people.

From the 16th to the 19th century, the Manchu army was stronger than China’s. But we ultimately wiped out that people.

This is why we are not afraid of the United States and the Soviet Union even at our weakest. They are just the next opponent. We have experienced too many opponents of that. In the end, we all won.

Yes china vanquished many enemies and also lost many wars. Often those enemies whom were stronger than china was when china was divided and weaker. The Xiong nu was a mighty confederacy who stood above China even when China was fully united.

Sometimes even united we are not strong enough to win but having patience and time for enemies to make mistakes and capitalise on them is key to victory

Our historical adversaries all lacked the capacity for long-term confrontation and competition. They are not homogeneous nations with a single ethnicity and a proprietary civilizational core; their internal problems always arise before ours. We just need to patiently wait for them to collapse on their own to win.

Sounds like America

Nomadic peoples had unique advantages during the age of cold weapons, such as the Magyars in Europe, and the Huns, Turks, and Mongols in Asia. But in the era of cold weapons, the truly desperate were the Mongols.

Ask the world. Are you desperate?

Then this powerful country was destroyed by Zhu Yuanzhang.

If Song dynasty was strong and united as whole of China, Mongols would have never broken through. China was 4 separate nations when mongols came and they even work with mongols against each other.

The Song Dynasty killed Mongke, the Great Khan of Mongolia. At this time, if Europe, Russia, or Central Asia were powerful, they should have taken advantage of the internal turmoil in Mongolia to reclaim the lands occupied by Mongolia.

It's a pity that they do nothing. Oh, sorry. I forgot.Europe itself was once a land occupied by barbarians.

Once mongke was killed and a kurraltai was called to elect new leader, the mongols never were the same. Battles like ain jalut was lost due to mongol leaders taking their armies home.

The fact that they remained in control of places like russia for another couple of centuries was pretty impressive but like many nations they would have gone into dustbins of history had russia not stolen mongolia from china in the early 20th century

What Mongolia, what Turkic, what Xiongnu. In 1942, there were only four policemen.

The rest are all colonies. No weapons are allowed.

Q: Who has ever completely defeated and destroyed the nomadic empire?

Answer: The Qin Dynasty. (Defeated the Xiongnu. Expelled the Xiongnu for a distance of 700km).

The Han Dynasty (destroyed the Xiongnu Empire, forcing it to flee westward.)

The Tang Dynasty. (Destroyed the Turkic tribes. Forced them to split and flee westward)

The Ming Dynasty (destroyed the Mongolian/Yuan Empire. Forced the Yuan Emperor to flee northward. And massacred Mongolian nobles at Lake Baikal)

Interviewing Beijing citizens why they aren't having kids is interesting.

@Hamartia Antidote

Is this about right? 😅

Chinese population will always fluctuate by chinese people as it has for 5000years

Meanwhile your descendents will be blacks and brownies

So you will dissappear and be irrelevant and your culture will be gone forever

lol and by 2100 you will have dissappeared while china will still be chinese

maybe you won't live long enough but 2049 is the year china marks as its true ascendence. It is 100years of communist rule and by then America will be firmly non white majority and looking like france riots right now but 10x worse with guns.

One country will be at its apex under a singular culture and mindset of a dominant race. The other country would have collapsed under non white majority and economic depression due to debt and no one buying bonds.

The future of America and China couldn't be any more different
