Which country has the strongest military in the world in 2026?

The Global Firepower Index 2026 has once again ranked the world's strongest militaries, offering a snapshot of how countries compare in terms of defence capability and resources. Based on dozens of indicators such as manpower, equipment, and budgets, the latest ranking places the United States, Russia, China, and India among the top military powers globally.

Military strength plays a crucial role in shaping a nation’s geopolitical influence, security posture, and strategic capabilities. Every year, the Global Firepower (GFP) Index evaluates the military power of countries across the world using a wide range of indicators.

In the 2026 Global Firepower ranking, the United States continues to hold the top position, followed by Russia, China and India among the world’s most powerful armed forces.

Based on SIPRI data for 2024–2025, the United States remains the world's largest military spender ($997 billion in 2024), followed by China and Russia, which saw a 38% increase in spending. Germany and India are also among the top five, with global military expenditure hitting a record high, driven by rising European and NATO budgets.
