The US president also claims Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have called his administration and indicated they did not want the United States to become directly involved in the conflict there.

The Houthis have imposed a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea, and this week wrested control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

“They would much prefer not having us involved, and they’re letting most ships go through. There’s just one country that they’re not too happy with, and we’ll get that straightened out,” Trump says.

Just like al Sauds have their own interests in Iran independent of the US, the US also has its own interests in Yemen independent of the al Sauds. The Americans are already stretched thin. As long as the Houthis let American and Israeli ships pass, why should they risk American lives for the al Sauds, who themselves have top of the line American and European weapons and treaty allies like Pakistan and Turkiye with strong militaries ? America will not go beyond providing technical help and advice unless the Houthis directly attack them or Israel.

Saudis already expelled the UAE from Yemen

However, that backfired for them because it was the UAE's forces who had made gains on the Red Sea coast years ago. It seems their forces are more competent than Saudi's proxy forces.

Saudis have limited influence or leverage in Yemen now. We are reverting to pre-1990 borders and the STC will be the counterparty to Ansarallah, not the Saudi backed government in exile.
