JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

Since we are expecting another foreign order for the JF-17 Block-III, an important question arises about whether Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) will add an additional production line to meet increased demand. Currently, PAC’s production capacity has been estimated between 16 to 20 aircraft per year, with ongoing deliveries to fulfil existing contracts and domestic requirements. Azerbaijan has already signed a major deal for up to 40 Block-III fighters, making it the largest export customer to date, and deliveries of initial aircraft have begun. In addition, a Libyan National Army agreement reportedly includes 16 JF-17 Block-III jets, further expanding export commitments. With other potential customers showing interest, expanding production capacity through an additional line could be essential to meet export orders while ensuring the Pakistan Air Force’s own fleet modernisation and delivery timelines are maintained.
Highly unlikely but one of the existing Rebuild Facility could be converted to JF-17 production.

Given that the price of the JF17C and J10CE are now apparently very close after the upgrade to Block III, why is it that the JF17C is starting to rack up more sales to clients than the J10CE ? Why do we think that is happening ?

With the exception of Pakistan, and now Indonesia, there are no other actual confirmed sales of the J10CE. Egypt is an unknown, and no one truly knows what Iran is up to for her Airforce if anything.

We have the potential of Nigeria ordering JF17C as part of their next procurement type of around 40 units ( though it may go elsewhere as well for a new type given the way the requirement is worded ).

Politics

Defence sales is not about money

It's not even about the best product sometimes

It's what's available and politically feasible for your nation to buy

China has come a long long way and it's weapons are of great quality now, but buying Chinese weapons in the face of western economic, political and military threat is awkward at best and impossible at worst due to consequences

Think Turkey and the S400, look at the consequences

Pakistan is down the pecking order and going through Pakistan is much much easier

If Pakistan and China wanted they could plan to make Pakistan a middleman for multiple Chinese systems

The original production lines were built to build twice the current manufacturing capacity, but were mothballed as export orders did not materialize, so most of the jigs and infrastructure exists to be able to re-spin up the 2nd line at PAC if required but I don't see such a surge in numbers. Syria is also a long long term possibility if they can reconstitute an IADS as well as the two need to paired together in modern warfare(as Iran found out to its cost).

The orderbook right now is not enough to warrant that spinning up a 2nd line. If Iraq places an order, and something for Bangladesh(? - unlikely imho) then would be enough to keep the line ticking given the rate at which both countries can build the infrastructure to host and deploy the JF17C, PAF has stopped ordering more JF17Cs it seems so the line is in low production mode for now.
