China Grants Pakistan Exclusive Airspace Corridor for Direct Bangladesh Flights

ISLAMABAD: China has granted Pakistan an exclusive airspace corridor to facilitate direct flights to Bangladesh, bypassing Indian airspace and promising significant reductions in operational costs and flight times for Pakistani carriers. The decision, announced on December 29, 2025, comes amid improving bilateral ties between Islamabad and Dhaka, where direct connectivity has been absent for years due to geopolitical constraints. Aviation officials indicate that this northern routing through western China into the Bay of Bengal will enable efficient services between major Pakistani cities and Dhaka, enhancing trade, tourism, and people-to-people contacts in South Asia.

The approval follows technical consultations between civil aviation authorities of China and Pakistan, aligning with international overflight principles under the International Civil Aviation Organization. Industry experts highlight that traditional routes have been hampered by sensitive airspace restrictions, leading to longer detours, higher fuel consumption, and increased scheduling uncertainties. By utilizing designated Chinese airways, Pakistani airlines can now plan reliable direct operations, potentially cutting fuel burn substantially and improving overall economic viability.

This development assumes added importance against the backdrop of regional tensions that have disrupted aviation networks in South Asia. The ongoing closure of certain airspaces has forced carriers to adopt circuitous paths, elevating costs and limiting connectivity. China's intervention provides Pakistani operators a strategic alternative, underscoring Beijing's expanding role in regional infrastructure and its support for allies in enhancing transport linkages. Bangladeshi stakeholders have expressed interest in reciprocal arrangements, including code-sharing and cargo collaborations, pending final timetables and safety verifications.

Analysts view the corridor as a testament to the deepening China-Pakistan partnership, which extends beyond the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to aviation domains. The routing via western China not only shortens select sectors but also reshapes overflight dynamics in the subcontinent. Pakistani carriers are anticipated to conduct demonstration flights and secure regulatory clearances before launching inaugural schedules, with expectations of linking Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad to Dhaka efficiently.

The move coincides with broader efforts to revive Pakistan-Bangladesh aviation ties. Recent approvals for Pakistani private airlines such as Fly Jinnah and AirSial to operate routes signal progressive normalization, while Bangladesh's national carrier prepares services to Karachi. Direct flights are projected to commence in January 2026, boosting bilateral trade, which has already shown a 20 percent increase year-on-year, driven by exchanges in rice, textiles, and other commodities.

India Alarmed by Potential Pakistan Role in Gaza Security Force
Economically, the corridor promises substantial savings for operators amid rising fuel prices and geopolitical uncertainties. Reduced flight durations will enhance passenger appeal, encouraging greater travel for business, medical purposes, and education. Bangladeshi students increasingly seek opportunities in Pakistani institutions, particularly in medical sciences and emerging technologies, while patients pursue specialized treatments. These people-to-people flows stand to benefit immensely from affordable and direct air access.

Geopolitically, China's facilitation highlights its strategic interest in fostering connectivity across South and West Asia. The arrangement illustrates how airspace coordination can transcend bilateral agreements, promoting regional integration under frameworks like the Belt and Road Initiative. It also reflects careful balancing of efficiency with security considerations, as overflight rights remain influenced by state-to-state relations.

As implementation phases proceed, aviation regulators emphasize adherence to safety protocols and slot allocations. Pakistani authorities anticipate phased rollout, starting with major hubs, while monitoring environmental impacts through optimized routing. The corridor's success could set precedents for future multilateral aviation pacts in the region, potentially involving other nations seeking alternatives to constrained pathways.

Forget Past Memories and Start a New Beginning Like Brothers, Bangladesh To Pakistan
Overall, Beijing's decision marks a pivotal advancement in regional aviation, offering Pakistan a cost-effective gateway to Bangladesh and reinforcing trilateral cooperation dynamics.

Airport authorities and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority said they had received the flight schedule and completed special arrangements for the arrival of the airline’s first flight to Karachi.

The resumption of direct air routes between Bangladesh and Pakistan is seen as important for both countries.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be operated twice weekly, the first regular flights since 2012.
