Maybe they want to look to see if they need(or can, or allowed to) to cancel or pull back the 1a/2 variants and keep what they already have, or even the entire Tejas project itself ? Make a hard decision on something that is just not getting any better with time. The large and very expensive order for the Rafale indicates some hard decisions are being made within the IAF right now given their poor performance to date and the need for capability. Maybe the solution is to cancel Tejas, and keep HAL "busy" with Su-57E's given the commonality with the Su30MKI tooling and infrastructure.

Accept defeat, and try again with something else such as AMCA with a private Indian contractor ?

We have visual confirmation of only 13 fully assembled Mk 1A

Even if we include LA 5046 that was undergoing final assembly 2 months ago, it's still 14,

14 Tejas Mk1A have completed first flights
15th Mk1A first flight scheduled this month.
18th one will fly by 30th April (that is one full squadron flight worthy by April).

Yes, they were disqualified for very high orderbook to revenue ratio, highlighting a large pending orderbook of 180 LCA Mk1A, 12 Su-30 MKI, 156 Light Combat Helicopter, 72 HTT-40 and so on apart from the future pipeline of hundreds of LCA Mk2 to be made by HAL.

With or without HAL, India needed separate production lines for AMCA. Either HAL built it or a private consortium did.

This makes it the 19th Mk1A aircraft
along with 1 fully assembled and 1 partially assembled trainers makes it the 21st Aircraft of the 83 Mk1A order,
If we include the partially assembled fuselage of LA 5053 then it would the 23rd aircraft.

HAL was supposed to deliver a total of 28 aircraft in 2 years (12 in FY 24-25 and 16 in FY 25-26)

In this entire ding dang of engines, no engines and delays the capabilities of the Tejas MKI A seem to have gone into the background.

Where does it stand in terms of operational capabilities? A refresher by those who have a grip on it, may like to throw some light pl?
