The speed and volume at which systems are being added is truly generational. Outside of China, I can't think of a single country adding system and modernizing at this pace. Maybe the South Koreans, but they had a significant headstart, but Turkey is closing gaps fast and in a more extensive say in terms of subsystems.

The Patriot system (MIM-104) is a point/area defense system designed primarily for short-range tactical ballistic missiles (SRBMs) and lower-flight-profile MRBMs of near-medium range

A ballistic missile with a range of 1,500 km means higher apoj (altitude), longer flight time, and a higher re-entry speed (Mach 5+). Patriot's kinetic energy, altitude, and response time are generally insufficient for such threats


Defended area: A battery protects approximately 50–100 km² (slightly more with PAC-3 MSE)

Maximum altitude: Around ~40 km with PAC-3 MSE (~20 km with PAC-2).
The apex altitude of an MRBM with a range of 1,500 km is usually around 300 km → Patriot cannot reach this altitude, it can only make a lucky hit in the terminal phase.


The most effective systems against threats in this range are higher-level systems such as THAAD or Arrow-3


KOMSU will need THAAD or ARROW-3 to stop Turkish TAYFUN B4 and CENK MRBMs

ROKETSAN Updates Maximum Range for MAM-L IIR to 40 km​


ROKETSAN, in its updated catalogue for 2026, updated the range for MAM-L IIR glide munition to 40 km, a significant increase from the previously given 25 km

For reference, 40 km is more than the maximum range for most of medium-range air defence systems such as FK-2000 , PANTSIR , VL-MICA , IRIS-T SLM


Due to not needing a laser designator, MAM-L IIR can reach a considerably longer range compared to the baseline MAM-L with laser guidance, which is limited to 15 km.

Gotta give it to the Turks and also South Korea. Both countries have risen up in the world and made a huge footprint in the defence industry. Absolutely phenomenal (y)

Previous brochure information stated that the missile + tube weight was less than 16kg. The source below specifies the new weight as 25kg. In this case, Karaok must have undergone a series of modifications and become slightly heavier than previous version. This may have made the range increase possible

The range improvement is nice but I don't want the system to get too heavy. It is supposed to be portable after all.

Might have been necessary for the range and payload to remain competitive in the modern battlefield. Especially with FPV drones and other things changing the dynamics.
