Turkey working with Rolls-Royce on 5th-gen combat aircraft engine​

The top body of Turkey’s defense industry has started cooperating with United Kingdom-based Rolls-Royce on the engine to power the country’s National Combat Aircraft (MMU), the head of the authority said Saturday.

In a televised program on broadcaster CNN Türk, Ismail Demir, head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), commented on the developments regarding the MMU, a long-awaited domestic defense industry project.

The TF-X MMU, which is a fifth-generation jet with similar features to Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II, is being developed by the local defense industry with the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) as the main contractor.

Stating that there is an alternative engine option in addition to the F-110 engine to be supplied from the U.S., Demir noted: “We also had the possibility of working with Rolls-Royce for the engine."

“We previously had some concerns (about this cooperation),” he said; however, the company resolved these concerns as a result of the meetings held.

“The work has begun,” he added.

Demir, back in March 2021, stated that the British company didn't have an engine for this particular aircraft and that the company was offering to develop an engine for the MMU with a partnership it established in Turkey.

However, there were conditions that the Turkish side didn’t accept, Demir said at the time, and added that once the company is ready, Turkey was in a position to boost the business to a better standing.

Open sources overwhelmingly suggest that Turkey’s TRMotor and Rolls-Royce will work together to develop an engine for the MMU.

Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce has close relations with another Turkish company, the Kale Group, as well.

The Kale research and development (R&D) company, under the roof of the Kale Group, has domestically developed turbojet missile engines that power Turkish missiles.

The national fighter jet is scheduled to exit the hangar in 2023, make its maiden flight in 2025 or 2026, and be added to the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) inventory in 2029.

These are very old and outdated articles, and they dont reflect what is going on right now. Both BAe and Rolls Royce are out of the picture for Kaan.

The design changes, highlighted in red in the above photo collage, are as follows:

- Redesigned Aft Fuselage Section: It has a more flush, and hence stealthier, profile between the two engines. This change will most likely help increase the aircraft's fuel capacity.

- Air Intakes: The engine intakes on P1 are positioned further back in relation to the cockpit compared to P0.

- Redesigned Flaps: The flaps on the trailing edge of P1's wing now have a uniform edge line in comparison to P0, which had larger inboard flaps than outboard flaps.

- Redesigned Horizontal Tailplanes: A slight adjustment was made on P1 that clipped the inside corners of the horizontal tailplanes. A similar adjustment was made on the American YF-22/F-22 when it was in development.

- New IRST/EOTS Sensors: P1 now shows an Infrared Search and Track (IRST) sensor on the dorsal side of the aircraft's nose just ahead of of the cockpit canopy. An Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) is shown in a mounting on the ventral side of the nose.

Brother, the Chatgpt you used is wrong. Its garbage in garbage out.

There is no current role of BAE and Rolls Royce partnership never went anywhere b/c they didn't want to do transfer of tech where Turkey would be able to independently build and export the engines.

Furthermore, when Turkey wanted to participate in the GCAP project, that offer was also
rejected. Rolls & Royce similarly adopted a negative stance regarding the engine task. In short, there is currently no UK contribution to the Kaan and TF35000 projects.

If the US does not cause problems in the supply of F110 Engines, the first 20 KAANs will be delivered in 2029-2030 period

and even with F-110 Engine KAAN can match with SU-57 and KF-21
other 4,5th gen Fighters F-15EX , F-16V , RAFALE , SU-35 , J-10C can not match with the KAAN in BVR combat


KAAN appears to have a lower RCS than the SU-57

To understand the real world difference lets take S-400’s 91N6E Search radar as reference. According to the manufacturer 91N6E has a detection range of 390 km against a 4 m^2 target. So it should be detecting , a F/A-18E Super Hornet (~1 m^2) from 275 km, the Su-57 (assuming 0.1 m^2) from 155 km, and a F-22/F-35 (-40 dBsm) from 27 km. In short, a radar will be having between 6 to 10 times greater detection range against the Su-57 compared to F-22 & F-35.

Hopefully the Turkish engineers can develop the FBW to have the same kinetic performance of the F22 Raptor aswell. Long journey ahead to develop and certify the FBW to that level.

not sure, my AI prompt might have done that unknowingly. I just took MMM-E's image and told it to line up the aircraft.

no TVC

No stealth nozzles as of yet have been announced. They are just trying to build a basic engine, maybe variants can be built afterwards.
