Back in high school, I learned to fly in a Cessna 152 so by the time I joined the USAF, I had all the basics of flight down. The thing with experience is that the more you gain the more you are forced to think about details. And if you have no experience, you should rely on those who do have to give you those details. Expansion of one's mind, and all that stuff. I was invited to come to PDF back in 2009 and since then, I found there is a high degree of contempt for experience here.

Maybe, but I don't think the strategic value of Taiwan is TSMC alone. Capture the Island, and the PLA could venture past the 1st Island chains.

As for the cost, never underestimate how far are politicians willing to go to save their career at the expense of national misery (short and long term). Not only for China but U.S politicians as well.

Li first examines the performance of Chinese anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) divisions in Vietnam. From 1965 to 1967, China sent nine AAA divisions into North Vietnam, which provided air defense for North Vietnam in response to America’s Rolling Thunder airstrikes. Li discusses the command structures of the Chinese AAA division, their weapons, combat tactics, and other operational issues in great detail. In late 1965, the objective of the Chinese air defense shifted from protecting Vietnamese facilities to shooting down as many American airplanes as possible. While this more proactive tactic satisfied Hanoi’s desire to defeat Rolling Thunder, it also exposed the Chinese troops to high casualties. Gradually, the Chinese government moved toward a more cautious air defense to reduce casualties. Until China withdrew its AAA division from Vietnam in 1969, Li argues, “it was their ability to preserve their forces that may have been their greatest success” (p. 123).

Now when we discuss Taiwan contingency the pro-Tawan always brings up the embargo to strangle Chinese economy they love to talk about the Malacca dilemma etc as if it is easy to realize the embargo. They incessantly cite China's needs for oil when China only imports 50% of its needs and mostly for transportation and Chemical feedstock of which 20% are from central Asia and Russia and the rest is from Angola and the Middle East. China has a huge and dormant oilfield around Karamy in Xinjiang but not developed due to difficult area and transportation. What's the use ? The ungrateful Vietnamese will always belittle and deny any useful Chinese help to Vietnam in their wars against US and France. If it wasn't for China stopping the US army from crossing the 17th parallel into North Vietnam, Vietnam today is an American colony. They just want to perpetuate their hate of China as their thousand year historical enemy to justify and keep Vietnam's independence. Snake will always bite back on the hand feeds it.
