"Grey shadows": The mysterious Egyptian Mirage 2000EM/BM
The Mirage (2000EM/BM) of Egypt (M from Al Misr, the name of the country in Arabic, hence "in Missiri", "Misirlu", etc.), is an extremely rare sight, and even more so outside the country. This is despite Egypt being the first export customer for the now legendary new generation delta wing of the French, contracting already in December 1981, almost three years before the type became operational with the French Air Force! While their traditions began in 1986, two years before those of Greek.

1712424527748.png

The size of the contract, $890 million for 20 aircraft at 1981 prices (while Greece gave $1.38 billion for 40 aircraft at 1985 prices), is an indication of the extraordinarily rich electronic equipment and armament it included.

Interestingly, these aircraft (including 4 two-seaters) are guarded for some reason like the Holy Grail. As it seems, even after the Camp David agreements, Egypt (as well as Greece after the events of November 1967 in Cyprus) considered that a basic diversification of weapons sources was necessary, all the more so since the US has not released critical weapons for Egypt's F-16s to date.

1712424803015.png

Until the advent of the Rafale/MiG-29M2 they were the only aircraft in Egypt with intermediate-range AAM missiles (Matra Super 530D with Thomson-CSF RDM+ radar deployment), plus of course the Matra Magic-2.

Furthermore, they were from the beginning perfectly equipped with:
a) shock pods with laser Thomson/CSF ATLIS II,
b) laser guided Matra BGL bombs,
c) laser-guided hypersonic air-to-ground missiles AS.30L (range about 10 km, extremely precise and powerful explosive warhead),
d) Matra ARMAT (anti-radar missile of huge range, well over 100 km, but subsonic) and generally unique weapons for the Egyptian arsenal.

geetha-MINA-AEGEUS-27_nov_018-egypt-mirage-2000-1536x1024.jpg

1712425259018.png

Legend has it that highly advanced jammers and RWRs exist, with no reliable press information. It is recalled that the first generation Mirage 2000EAD/DAD/RAD of the United Arab Emirates, another country in the region that received Mirage 2000, carried not the complete and highly effective ICMS Mk. 1 (also used by the Air Force) but a sur measure combination of distributor of Spirale consumables, internal jammers ELT/558 of Italian Elettronica and RWR ELT/158 also of Elettronica, which was published in reputable media in 2003 as providing precision sighting capable of genuine SEAD missions.

1712425106018.png

Given that Egypt was the first to introduce Italian electronic warfare systems in the Middle East, the Selenia ALQ-234 jamming pods with Mirage 5 carrier, which it even lent to Iraq during the war with Iran with excellent results (full jamming of MIM-23B I-HAWK anti-aircraft missiles), it would be surprising if Egypt did not take advantage of this purely Arab-inspired and Italian-executed self-protection solution (and not only).

I think it's pretty safe to say now that we have the information in the above underlined portion that it's pretty clear who took out the Turkish MIM-HAWK AAM batteries in Libya during the standoff with Turkey and Sisi's "Red Line"! There was speculation that it might've been the UAE because they had a few Mirages stationed in Marsa Matruh, but this is pretty clear that it was the EAF's Mirage 2000s and one of the reasons why they guard these aircraft from prying eyes with all their might.
1712425714347.png

On the other hand, visually the impression is given of a French Serval unit on the vertical tail fixed, above which there is an unknown additional antenna facing backwards. The above operational capabilities of the Egyptian -2000EM were, taken together, unprecedented for the region, at least during the first years of press service.

1712425806781.png

The aircraft, painted in two-tone gray with inconspicuous separation, and with the typical black dielectric radar cone carried by the first export aircraft of the type, have served with the same fate for almost 36 years: the 82nd, formally in an air defense role, but in reality in every conceivable role, as evidenced by the extensive arsenal of the type.

Finally, it is not known if they were ever upgraded, even rudimentarily, with a new RLG INS, monitors, etc. Any potential losses are also not known. Thus, the Mirage 2000 service in Egypt is still shrouded in secrecy and an aura of elitism.

Source. And further down in this page is a terrific technical discussion on the Libyan raid by these Mirages and what the author of this article (Nicholas from Greece) opines different theories and possibilities. Suffice it to say that even a raid like that which appears simple on the outside is frought with dangers and complications from SEADs to SAM threats to EW spoofing and GPS guided standoff munitions which would've made the SCALP EG a perfect weapon to use in that instance so was it EAF Rafales then? He says most likely not since they hadn't reached total IOC with the EAF at the time of the raid which then brings in the possibility of the UAE Mirages and so on. Terrific read if anyone is interested in those details. But goes to show that the way the EAF stays quiet about its missions and tactics is a testament to how dangerous and potent it is and is capable of conducting broader and deadlier missions in the region. The mention of the EAF Mirages in the Iraq/Iran war also had tremendous successed. Good stuff.

GREEK MIRAGE 2000 AT THE PYRAMIDS! PHOTOS OF THE EXERCISE WITH EGYPT

For eight days, Greek and Egyptian fighter jets flew together in the Mediterranean and inland Egypt. The photos are from the joint exercise that began on May 29 and ends today. On the same day, Chief of Staff Christos Vaitsis also flew F-16s to Egypt.

Air force base is Tanta Air Base, Egypt. From there, Greek Mirage 2000-5s took off, participating in the exercise "Houras 2015", which took place in the framework of the implementation of the 2015 Military Cooperation Program of the two countries.
The Hellenic Air Force participated with a team of four (4) M-2000-5 aircraft and a similar personnel of 331M.
During the exercise, Interception and Air Combat missions were carried out in mixed formations.

One of the most iconic photos of combat aircraft formation flying. Taken during Bright Star Exercise in 1982 over the Nile Delta in Egypt. The aircraft consisted of:

Egyptian F-4 Phantom II, EAF Mirage 5, EAF Chengdu J-6, US NAVY A-6 Intruder, EAF MiG-17, US NAVY A-7 Corsair II, EAF MiG-21, EAF F-16B Fighting Falcon and a US NAVY F-14 Tomcat.

The SC with his steadfast positive outlook, always! What an admirable quality ya sa3at el beh! Honestly, it's an example for all to learn.

I think the emotional aspect of the frustration is what gets me all the time, it never fails. As much as that article sounds like it's full of crap, the mere fact that the Jews have left such an indomitable impression on the EAF's ability to acquire top of the line weapons -- and specifically A2A missiles -- has had a permanent effect on the likes of us, particularly myself as you can clearly see and it also leaves that mark on any journalistic endeavor, just like it did in this article. It's almost a given that anytime someone writes about the EAF in any media across the world, it's a certainty that the topic will be brought up, intentionally or by default and that really, really, really SUCKS! It's like branding on cattle!

When the history of the EAF's F-16s being AMRAAM-less is front and center of any discussion or publication related to the EAF, and we see Egypt go out and be the first country to get the Rafale only to be immediately upped by Qatar which does get the missile without a shred of obstacles, followed by India and Greece etc., it's inevitable that it would gnaw at one's craw! On top of all that, the reason is absurd and vomit-inducing. To think how pathetic these supplying countries are to be so subservient to the Jews' demands AS WELL as have such mistrust of Egyptian honor and integrity is ultimately insulting to no end! It's akin to adding insult to grave injury.

I really hope you're right and that there is no truth to that news, especially with the revamping of the F-15 possibility! And they make it sound like the EAF is simply happy enough that its 40-year-old request to acquire the Eagle is finally coming to fruition that it would settle for just the aircraft without the AIM-120 missiles. Pathetic.

Just for that, I not only hope Sisi tells them to go to hell and not let the door hit them in the ass on the way out, but to say it and do it emphatically! Seeing the EAF get 30 new Rafales, 24 new Typhoons and 24 new F-15 Eagles without Meteors or AIM-120s knowing they could've acquired the Su-35S with the R-77-1 & R-37M without any restrictions would be devastating beyond comprehension.
Yea one way or another the bvr capabilities will arrive, pretty sure after the su35 debacle happened the Egyptians will not tolerate any 2nd rate deal, they’d definitely take advantage one way or another, either by shutting the canal or questioning the David accords. France and Italy need money. I think the egys made it clear that “other avenues” will be sought after if there’s a failure to uphold the full deal of missiles due to the stupid qme policy.

H12 Poseidon VTOL UAS

1712537692164.jpeg

  • H12 Poseidon VTOL UAS is designed to serve as a universal aerial superiority platform with payload capacity up to 100 kg. H12 Poseidon is positioned to compete with theater-level UAVs, such as MQ-9 Reaper and Bayraktar BT2 with significantly lower TCO, increased mobility, and survivability.
  • H12 Poseidon VTOL UAS is designed as a mid-wing airframe with hybrid propulsion – two gasoline motors and eight permanently mounted VTOL electric motors. Redundant VTOL and cruise motors allow for safe recovery in case of failures or kinetic damage. Outer wing sections of H12 Poseidon are designed for quick field attachment for operations from a mobile base or onboard a marine vessel.

The drone can also be used to carry out armed attack and air support missions, as it is armed with a payload system capable of launching light Black Scorpion torpedoes, six 80 mm bombs, or four mortar shells from high altitudes.

The Egyptian company is working to develop the process so that the percentage of its local component reaches more than 75% during the coming period.

SRS-1A
1712538049081.jpeg

The SRS-1A drone is a heavy, quad-engine drone that can take off and land vertically. Its maximum take-off weight is 60 kg. It can also carry a payload of up to 25 kg, and can fly with the maximum payload for 20 minutes.

The march can be used as a reconnaissance platform, an air attack platform armed with various weapons systems, or the transport of military payloads, such as tactical missions, via a cargo carrier.

The SRS-1A is armed with a dual rocket launcher that can be armed with Hydra 70 unguided missiles, which can be equipped with a variety of warheads.

Very cool. As you very well know, a lot of these unmanned systems have been supposedly showcased in live combat for the first time in the Russia/Ukraine war, but in reality, this specific suicide watercraft first appeared in Somalia & Yemen IIRC through Iran supplying the Houthis, well before the war in Ukraine started and the Arab world was onto it as a result. They quickly realized the lethality of a relatively cheap sacrificial platform that could take out a half billion $ warship and how lopsided of a tradeoff that is. Pretty much why everyone and their mothers has been advocating the future of warfare being that of unmanned vehicles of all types.

The more interesting element to this process is how a new weapon gets unveiled, tested and applied in the field that changes the entire dynamic (such as this weapon) almost always has a counter. For every weapon developed, another that counters it becomes the next fad as we've seen with UAVs and more recently anti-UAV guns or weapons. An entire field industry is dedicated to this weapons system now and it's only going to get even crazier with the advent application of AI in almost everything we see out there now. And it's a good thing that the Egyptian Army realized this a while back and has invested A LOT of R&D into the UAV/UCAV field of all mediums as we see here. We've only recently started to see the fruits of all these efforts within the last 4/5 years at EDEX and other exhibits and it's only going to get bigger and bigger as time goes on.

Better have them too..and some unmanned subs also..
The only solution that Russia has found in Ukraine is to bomb the manufacturing plants of these drones in Odessa.. they are very dangerous indeed, even worst than UAVs as they can sink big ships worth billions of dollars .. but the most a UAV can destroy is a tank worth at most $10 million..

@mack8

sorry it took a day to get back to you on this. I was looking for my "MiG-21 Walkaround" booklet as it has a terrific treasure trove of history for the MiG-21 variants and specifically its users. Information that you would be hard-pressed to even find online considering how much there is about the MIG-21 and its incredible history. But sadly I couldn't find it lol. It's in my shop somewhere and ATM the place is a disaster. I actually need a week to clean & organize it with all the tool and just all kinds of shhtttuuff all over the place.

So I had to look at other bits of literature that I have to gather the accurate info for you to the best of my ability. Now I know I said the EAF integrated the AIM-9Bs on its earlier MiG-21s (PF & PFM) and by the October 1973 war, they were outfitting the MiG-21 MF with AIM-9Ps. So I figured the best way to accurately portray what occurred is to list the actual different MiG-21 models/variants the EAF used through its history and then list the AIM missiles integration on the specific models. This way I have the accurate variants and timeline and with the historical data of the missile's induction, it will corelate better with the exact models.

I'm sure most if not all this information you already know, so bear with me my intention is not to tell you something you already know, but to lay it all out for the sake of getting it accurate as to the timeline of the variants that ended up using the 2 types of AIM missiles.

GoMig-21 said:
Do let us know if you come across any, Mack. (y) That would be quite interesting to see.

I remember after the October/Ramadan War of 1973 when Egypt switched from Soviet equipment & doctrine to US, it still had over 150 MiG-21s and their AA-3 (R-3S) Atolls were running out. So the EAF started mounting AIM-9Bs on its earlier MiG-21s (PF & PFM) as a replacement with great success. That definitely started a trend at the time.

EAF MiG-21PF with AIM-9B.

View attachment 31758
View attachment 31759

Intertesting tidbit that i didn't knew about re the AIM-9B on MiG-21, but are you sure those are AIM-9Bs and not normal R-3S loadouts on that MiG-21R (not PF)? The missiles would be hard to differentiate since they are similar. Also did you guys fitted Magics to the MiG-21MFs as well or i'm thinking of another air force?

On the issue of russian missiles on western planes and specifically concerning IRIAF, it's a case of building the electronic box necessary to translate russian input in western language so to say, not THAT difficult. But determination, support and steadfast work is needed to finish such a project, not just give up after the first try as it apparently happened. R-27 and R-73 would be much superior compared to legacy AIM-7E and AIM-9P models.

So these are essentially the list of MiG-21 models the EAF deployed starting with the first model in the MiG-21 F-13, arguably the sexiest, sport's car version of the MiG-21s. I'll post the details on the AIM-9P & B in a subsequent post just FYI.

F-13 These were kept in their aluminum metallic finish and as they were dogfighting the zionists, other EAF pilots noticed that the bare metal was a dead giveaway as the sun reflected off the wings & body and the would shine from miles away! That was the advent of the legendary EAF Camouflage schemes that went crazy ensuing this discovery! :D

Top 10 Navies in Africa. Interesting list and goes to show there are some serious navies across the continent including like I mentioned before the powerful Algerian Navy and even Morrocco, Tunisia & Nigeria. Good, insightful top 10 list. @Chakib Larbi , Algeria is commissioning another 2 brand new Kilo submarines on top of the 6 you already have? That's incredible. I would much rather get the Kilos than the German Type-209s.

Is the US threatening CAATSA on you guys because of this and all the Russian equipment you're purchasing? W'lad el kalb el Amricaan lol. I'm curious to see how if the US is threatening you guys also.

@The SC so how are they going to modify this current contract for the 2 Bergamini FREMMs in the EN with the 2 (possibly 4) more they want to purchase with the Italian mega deal? Check out the wording for this preliminary contract which runs for 10 years and how do you think they'll modify the new one with this one?

Fincantieri signs ten-year maintenance contract for Egyptian FREMM frigates

Italy’s Fincantieri has signed a €260 million contract with Egypt for the maintenance of two FREMM frigates over a ten year period.

The company made the announcement on 22 November, stating the total value of the contract includes the portion that will be allocated to Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN) – the joint venture owned by Fincantieri and Leonardo with stakes of 51% and 49%, respectively – as a sub-supplier.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, said, “This contract confirms Fincantieri’s strategy of creating long-term strategic partnerships involving multi-year delivery of technology services with key customers”.

The Egyptian Navy received two ex-Italian Navy FREMM frigates, ENS Bernees (ex-Emilio Bianchi) and ENS Al Galala (ex-Spartaco Schergat) in April 2021 and December 2020 respectively.

It was reported in early 2020 that Egypt was interested in buying two FREMM frigates from Italy, drawn from the Italian Navy’s procurement program – the vessels Spartaco Schergat and Emilio Bianchi, launched in January 2019 and January 2020, respectively – enabling Fincantieri to sell the vessels for an estimated cost of €1.2 billion.

The ex-Italian frigates are in ‘general purpose’ configuration and armed with a Leonardo 127/64 mm Lightweight (LW) mm gun, a 76/62 mm Super Rapido gun and two 25 mm guns as well as the MBDA SAAM-ESD (Surface Anti-Air Missile – Extended Self-Defense) Air Defense Missile system able to launch the Aster family of surface-to-air missiles. Some sensitive equipment particular to the Italian Navy, including electronic warfare systems, have apparently been removed and replaced with equipment sourced elsewhere.

The Italian Navy’s Carlo Bergamini-class FREMM frigates have a full load displacement of about 6 500 tons, an overall length of about 144 meters and can reach a top speed of 27 knots with a maximum cruising range of 6 800 nautical miles at 15 knots.

Egypt previously received the French FREMM frigate Normandie (Tahya Misr) from France in 2015, optimized for anti-submarine warfare.
