This series of satellite remote sensing images (from L to R) shows the vegetated areas in 1986,1996, 2006, 2012 and 2022, respectively, in Kekeya, Aksu Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. (Xinhua)

Compared with 2014, the area of desertified land in Xinjiang has decreased by 24,300 hectares. This is the first time the region has realized the overall reduction of desertified land, according to a press conference on the national desertification prevention and control plan on December 30, 2022.

The desert town Hotan, ranked as the most polluted city on the planet earth due to daily sandstorms, are fighting the mighty Taklamakan Desert and has siginificantly pushed back the desert in the last decade.

Old photo o Hotan from a decade ago, when the Taklamakan Desert almost completely engulfed Hotan.

Since then multiple anti desert encroachment measures haven been taken to fight back the desert. With the help of huge desert management investment and availability of high tech solutions, Now the desert is fast receding every passing year.

Researchers Cultivate Fast-growing Rice in Xinjiang Desert​
