I had a detailed call with my friend from Muzaffarabad on today’s horror. What I’m told is beyond shocking. Awami Action Committee (AAC) had sought permission to hold a rally. It got that. The government had already accepted all the demands and told AAC that a package from Islamabad will be announced as a confirmation too. However, AAC wanted to hold a rally to show its strength and conclude the protests. While the rally was on, Pakistani paramilitaries (Rangers) who were not supposed to manage protests today, suddenly started arriving in convoys and hovering over the protesters in helicopters. It provoked protesters and lead to anti-military sloganeering. The Rangers responded by firing live shots straight at the protesters, killing at least three of them and maiming dozens of others. People couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was like a program.
Rangers were not supposed to be around the protesters since there was permission to hold the protest and it was supposed to disburse with a celebration. Rangers were never needed.
With interior minister out of the country in Ireland enjoying cricket, ‘his’ troops murdering civilians in Azad Kashmir, local officials clueless on who deployed the Rangers and ordered them to open fire at the civilians, there is something more than meets the eye.
What a tragic day for Azad Kashmir and for Pakistan. It can have devastating impact on Kashmir’s relation with Pakistan. What a win for Modi and India.
