UK begins manufacturing of new combat aircraft

>> "And so it begins!!!"

Tempest is leaving the EU FCAS programme miles behind. Maybe it has to do with the fact that neither the preening princes of France or Germany are involved.

France and Germany combined do not have the technological skills to develop a current state of the art fighter.

Neither has the engine or stealth technology in order to match US-China when their next generation fighters come out next decade.

It is no accident that Japan chose the UK/Italy Tempest programme rather than the France/Germany one. They only want the very best as they will face off against China in East Asia.

France has the Rafale of course, but the core dna of the Rafale is from its participation in the Typhoon programme and the UK was the brains behind Typhoon. France has some history in home grown jets, but Tempest is not just the technology, but new collaborative processes, procedures and these things the French are not very good at all.

Interesting tweet to describe the differences between the UKS FCAS, GCAP and Tempest buzz words !

Just from the bits I read, so this is the differentiator to what the UK has today with Tempest

- Ability to operate unmanned or as a drone.
- AI assisted
- Possible advance engines which allow hypersonic flight
- laser energy weapons - whatever that might be, maybe the things we see acting as anti drone.
- More stealthy than the Typhoon.
-Modular design so can plug and play easier.

I dont know why, for me it somewhat sounds like a white elephant project and I have seen a few of those run by the government.

Why not go full unmanned, AI brain but alao human control. That will free up space in the aircraft and less risk with hypersonic flights.

No idea why it has tail fins either as they contribute to substantial stealth increase.

Maybe the finalised design will be tailless.

A combo of highly stealth, hypersonic speed in unmanned configuration with long legs will be deadly. Wont need tails for that as the objective will be to destroy targets far off.

UK open to Canadian involvement in new fighter jet project

>> Canada and Australia would make excellent additions given how their requirements are so similar to Japans, ie the need for long range.

Tempest Stealth Fighter Flying Demonstrator Takes Shape

The program partners confirm that over 50 percent of the aircraft, by structural weight, is now being built or has already been completed.

The new aircraft now being built at Warton is, notably, the first new flyable U.K. fighter demonstrator since the EAP.
