I think Khamenei has served his purpose.
He ruined Iran's golden generation. We had a peak of youths who were well-educated and could change the country for the better. Now, the average age of an Iranian is close to 35. Our work force is getting old, our social security is already close to complete bankruptcy. Fertility rate has dropped below 1.6 like highly developed European countries. We do not have enough water to sustain urban life in our major cities and we have no air force to defend our country. We have no nuclear deterrence to slightly change the balance in our favor either.
Now that the fool has served his purpose, it's time for change. I'm really afraid that what we are witnessing are the last years of Iran as we know it.
Historically speaking, many nations have gone through the same thing (foreign interference and eventual disarray and chaos) but only few of them managed to reorganize and get their shit together. Most of them lost their identity and territories for several decades, and usually centuries. And who knows what will happen decades later or centuries later with the advance of AI and neuroscience?
Khamenei will not leave until those who planted him in power and benefited from him allow him to leave. If he dies by old age one day, they will make sure that his predecessor is even weaker than him, probably already selected.
Khamenei is just one stupid man, IRI itself is a faulty or dysfunctional system of conservative theocracy run on socialist economy to control a highly educated progressive society. A recipe for disaster. Enemies of Iran know this very well so they make sure that this system survives. Israel attacked IRGC's CoC, scientists in their homes but left Majles shits and Khamenei untouched, wonder why? Because if Iran is left on its own it will become what it has always been, a filthy rich powerhouse sitting on and controlling Eurasian borders. Again why would anyone want that?
