That is very much possible.

Prior to 2015, Chinese tanks have suffered from relatively weak suspension, specifically low Torsion Bar strength and life, yet following setbacks and revelations during both internal exercises and external use in Tank Biathlon and PA tank bid against BM Oplot, it is said that both indigenous ZTZ99A, as well as VT-4s, enjoys reinforced suspension that's up to the leading international standard, enabling redundancies for side protection modules.

VT-5 have showcased the ability to mount modular side protection in their state television, with the primary advertised scheme being FY-2SH ERA (FY-4 also possible), offering defense against Tandem HEAT and resistance against darts in certain frontal angles. Still, as Russian experience have shown, a more comprehensive protection calls for the addition of active protection systems, where both GL-5 and GL-6 are offered.

VT-4 certainly have the potential to become a very effective city fighter thanks to advanced anti-personnel and structure munitions, capable of firing:
BTE-2/3 high explosive with advanced JH-2 explosive formula, with a TNT equivalent of ~5.25kg, more than twice that of NATO 120x570mm multi-purpose high explosive shells;
BTS-8 PELE shells, a dedicated anti-structure shell combining a high explosive body with a tungsten penetrator tip, designed to penetrate concrete/brick walls and explode with enhanced lateral effect
GP-125 ATGM for engaging structures from afar;
BTJ-3 tandem HEAT-FS against reinforced structures and light vehiclesView attachment 1218

Overall VT-4/Al-Haider is a very promising platform, where continuous improvement would certainly transform an already capable vehicle into a platform ready for future conflicts.
PA doesn't show interest in Light Tanks.

Infantry mobility is an important factor in a protected vehicle.

This gate guard concept defies the concept of mobility.

Nopes, figure is much less..

There's already 176 around. 500? Every source I read it's 680....You would know first hand if room is being made and if older tanks are being put away for storage.

Almost half of 176 are inside Pakistan at the moment. 680 is very old figure which had been drastically reduced. New developments....

On the topic of light tanks I completely agree. I only briefly mentioned VT-5 because it’s the first Chinese export series tank to showcase modular ERA side protection before VT-4 was advertised to be able to mount ERA on the side.

As for using vehicles as checkpoint garrisons, well, unless you can plant a pre-fab semi-permanent concrete bunker down by the roadside, some vehicle eventually have to be there to establish presence while still having mobility. For lower threat areas anti-IED vehicles offer low upkeep cost and light maintenance burden which makes them irreplaceable.

The most usual weapon and tactics employed in ambushing checkpoints like these would be light MLRS and/or mortar shelling, in which case anti-IED vehicle does offer enough protection against shrapnel most of the time. If they are insufficient, like I mentioned before, armoured wheeled IFVs like VN-1 and VN-22 do exist, providing all-round protection ranging from STANAG 4569 III to V depending on the configuration

The TD-type engines make it possible to use jet fuel (kerosene) and petrol along with diesel fuel aka Multi-fuel.
Just as a side note, the 5TD-6TD series diesel engines are just plain fuel hungry, especially in a counter-insurgency role where the tank primarily either sits in idle or perform limited tactical maneuvers.
The nature of them being opposed two-stroke-cycle engines, with very short stroke distance, large piston diameter, and high RPM means they can cram a lot of peak power output in tight (especially flat) spaces, with the unfortunate downside being low torque at low RPM (poor acceleration), short time between overhaul (high RPM = high wear), and bad fuel economy (fuel-rich combustion at low RPM). They really are more intended for the soviet armour spearhead, long-distance breakthrough, not for rat-blasting.
Although in the near future, engines like 6TD could see a resurgence. A very interesting development recently have been electric transmission in tanks and AFVs reaching operational maturity, which benefits engines like 6TD immensely, since it means the diesel engine only have to operate at ideal RPM condition where its advantage in high energy density can be used in full, while its disadvantage in bad low RPM performance can be perfectly ameliorated by the natural feature of electric motors.
