Bangladesh Socio-Political Crisis 2024

Hasina puts on brave face as anxiety grows

Key points from the article -

  • As many as 174 people have died as a result of the government's ferocious crackdown on the student protests that escalated into civil unrest, according to a count by Daily Prothom Alo, a leading vernacular newspaper that notes the number could be much higher due to government restrictions. A Western diplomatic source estimates the number of injured at 10,000.
  • The foreign ministry in Dhaka, meanwhile, invited foreign diplomats to a briefing on Sunday, during which the US ambassador Peter Haas criticised authorities over the killings, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). Haas spoke first as authorities opened the floor after playing a 10-minute clip made by Somoy TV, a pro-government TV station, according to a diplomatic source. "I am surprised you did not show the footage of police firing at unarmed protesters," he quipped, according to AFP.
  • Increased presence of army soldiers on ground.
  • Police in the Bangladesh capital said at least 532 people, including senior leaders of the main opposition BNP and the largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, were arrested.
  • At least 61,000 people have been charged with violence over the unrest, according to Prothom Alo. Most of those charged are unidentified, a prelude to a looming legal crackdown ahead.

Banglis have been a free people from the beginning and led the rebellion against the British in 1857, sadly the same cannot be said of the people of lands constituting Pakistan.

If you live near Indian boarder, try to get a Sim from India. It works near the boarder region.

Unlike Pakistani, Bd people have no access to weapons. They are fighting against the armed police and ranger with stick and stone like pelistini.

A "perfect storm" has happened over the last 4 years in BD.

Covid-19, Ukraine war and also the corruption as regards "freedom fighter" quota have all come to a head now where desperate students feel they have little to lose by rising up against the government.

India has been able to mitigate the inability to provide enough jobs for graduates by literally sending in excess of 1 million of them to countries such as UK and Canada over the last 2-3 years, due to its gepolotical influence and having Indians in key government positions in those countries. BD does not have this option to alleviate the unemployment of its graduates.

Where do we go now from here?

It is obvious that the security forces used too much force and we need some kind of accountability as to those who gave orders to fire rashly.

Also the quotas need to radically be scaled back that they are a tiny portion of total goverment jobs and anyway recruitment should be based on merit.

Overthrowing this government would just bring chaos and instability and we may see a succession of short-lived governments and the attendant violence and extra economic pain to go along with this. Be careful what you wish for as the grass is not always greener on the other side.

I can feel what the university students are currently doing. In Indonesia, it needs around 1 year for student protest to finally bring down Soeharto from power with the help of God, but that was also done during Asian Financial Crisis where Indonesia is the most effected victim of it

Latest updates -

1. Internet is on in certain areas, very slow speed.
2. Images surfacing of Army troops shooting civilians. Everything needs to be documented.
3. BD just signed a deal to hand operation control of Mongla Sea port to Indian authorities. Clear indication that a deal has been struck to keep Hasina in power by any means necessary. Even at the expense of selling national interest.

  • Public universities are issuing formal letters to expel and / or take disciplinary action against protesting students.
  • Police has filed case against 60K+ unknown individuals.
  • Police have been abducting anyone suspected of being involved in protest from their homes without due process, many people are missing.

If this revolution stops, these are the ways Hasina will ensure that every single one of her dissenters are imprisioned and/or killed.

La-Hasina was not elected by the people of Bangladesh. All of her so called signed contracts are illegal by default.

I don't know how long she will last, but whenever a new elected government takes power, all of those contracts will be thrown in the dustbin

Now or never, do or die.

Brother Pakistani people are gutless. Atleast Bangladeshi people are fighting but Pakistani people are letting corrupt rule them.
