Bangladesh Socio-Political Crisis 2024

The real reason: The Hasina govt is unable to maximize the limited resources to meet the growing material and cultural needs of the people of Bangladesh.

Since the start of the rate hike cycle in March 2022, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates more than a dozen times in a row. As a result of the strong dollar, many countries have seen their currencies depreciate rapidly, their foreign exchange dry up, their debt soar and their economies hit hard. In particular, South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, have been the most severely affected.

Bangladesh is a small country with a large population and an excessively high population growth rate, and Bangladeshis suffer from low employment all year round. And the dollar interest rate hike cycle has amplified the pain of Bangladeshis even more. The inability of the Hasina government to meet the demands of the Bengali people for jobs and incomes has led to riots.

This is not the real reason.

Look at this. How can any human (Insaan ka bacha) kill this innocent boy?
I mean how he was threat to hijra police?

May Allah grant him Jannat ul firdoos.

Good news is quota system is revised by Hasina government.... a very sane and intelligent decision by her...
Hasina knows how to run the country and bring prosperity in the region.... she is here to stay which is a great news for entire South Asia....

AL will face some tough time when they one day loose power. Well most of the top leadership will flee to foreign countries where they have stashed their looted money. The low level party cadres will either be «removed» or flee to India.

This is the cycle of madness in Bangladesh politics. And i have zero faith in BNB rule will be any better than current AL-rule.

This is not the real reason.
Indeed Bangladesh does not have a high population growth rate as the poster incorrectly suggested. However if the economy had been creating sufficient jobs then the quote system might not have such a major issue.

Kudos to Bangladeshis for standing up for their rights.

All things are intertwined but the real reason actually is NOT related to the broader economy.

Its simply a revolt against widespread corruption and public looting by a non-elected party.

Bro, the quota reserves 30% jobs for AL partymen under desguise of «fredoom fighter and descendants».

A neighbor of my extended family who still lives in rural Bangladesh have a socalled «freedom fighter» certificate. Yet that person was only 6-8 yo during the war in 1971. The wole thing is a scam.

when you add up quotas for different segments, including, women, disabled, minorities and so on; almost 55% of all public sector jobs were reserved for quotas, ergo hiring not based on merit. Its totally insane policy.

Lot of real freedom fighters didn't even access the quota. My father was a real freedom fighter, none of us three brothers took advantage of that. If we wanted, we could get govt jobs easily.

After 53 years of independence, the quota for freedom fighters is simply ridiculous, it should be abolished completely.

This is not the real reason.
The inability to satisfy the people's needs for material culture is the greatest sin of a government.

The same is true of Bangladesh. These students would not have cared about a few civil service posts if the Hasina government had provided enough jobs and a good living environment.

btw: Personally, I think the attribution of a position should depend on competence, not a reward or compensation. Rewards and compensation should use money directly.
Of course, I don't know much about the actual situation in Bangladesh. Perhaps I am not correct.

To add to all that - it gets even worse. They use these quotas multiple times. For example - a BAL party loyalist gets a govt job through "Freedom Fighter" quota (even though no one in his family was a real freedom fighter), and then use the same FF quota for promotions throughout his career multiple times to rise up the ladder, even though he is not qualified to be a high ranking govt. official.

The result - you have poor decision making and widespread corruption across the organization. A corrupt individual promotes other corrupt people so they can keep control of the system. This level of systemic corruption will not allow any development to happen. This is one example of the outcome of having corrupt people in charge of govt administration -

Even to build these they overspent by millions, shared the loot with the contractor of their choosing in clear conflict of interest.

But hey, all these Govt. expenses adds up to inflate GDP numbers and allows BAL to boast about "economic growth". But what value is it really adding to the people of Bangladesh?

That is usually the case with children of real freedom fighters. They fought for an independent country, not materialistic gain for next generation.

BNP is as corrupt as BAL. In fact, many political families inter-marry and have close business relationships.

But - if the revolution succeeds now, it will show BNP that you have to be accountable to the people of Bangladesh or else you face the same fate. May be that will place some fear in their hearts and hopefully there won't be a repeat of BAL regime.

As soon as internet is restored - the following needs to be spread across social media -

BD Internal security forces are using Spearhead system (Source), which they acquired from Israeli firm Passitora (needless to say that is illegal since Bangladesh does not recognize Israel). These are mobile surveillance van that can hack into phones within a radius of about half a kilometer. In addition to other spyware available at the govt. disposal.
