Li Auto is a Chinese startup founded in 2015. In 9 years, it turned into one of the bestselling Chinese brands domestically by selling over 370,000 cars in 2023. Its current model line comprises five high-end cars. Four are EREV (extended range electric vehicle) crossovers: L6, L7, L8 and L9. The fifth is the electric minivan, Mega. The recently launched Li L6 gathered 10,000 orders in 72 hours. Now, Li Auto wants to strengthen its market position again by slashing its models’ prices.

The price of the entry-level Li Auto L7 Pro trim level was slashed by 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD). The L7 Max and L7 Ultra trims have become 20,000 yuan (2,800 USD) cheaper. The price range of the Li Auto L7 is 301,800 – 359,800 yuan (41,650 – 49,650 USD). It is a mid-to-large crossover with five seats and dimensions of 5050/1995/1750 mm. We now know that the BYD pickup is called Shark. As can be seen from BYD’s teaser poster the company isn’t giving much away ahead of its launch at the Beijing Auto Show on April 25 however we have uncamouflaged spy shots from amigos in Mexico.

The fact that the BYD poster is in English rather than Chinese is telling showing that the pickup has primarily been designed with overseas markets in mind. Many of the spy shots seen have come from overseas and right hand drive as well as left hand drive versions have been spied indicating there should be little time lag for sales to begin in important RHD markets for pickups like Australia and South Africa.
In many ways the Shark can be seen as pickup version of the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 and uses the same DMO platform which is purposely designed for off-road PHEV vehicles. The DMO platform prioritizes energy efficiency by integrating the advantages of BYD’s DM-i and DM-p technology. Furthermore, it allows real off-road ability. Using the electric four-wheel drive system the pickup can adjust the torque distribution between front and rear swiftly and intelligently. System responses are measured in milliseconds allowing ultra-fast motor responses in conditions where there are rotational changes such as in icy conditions. The energy center lock facilitates intelligent torque transfer between front and rear axles, enabling speeds up to 30 times faster than a mechanical center lock.

BYD Shark uncamouflaged spy shots from Mexico
The DMO platform adopts a longitudinal layout for the engine and electric hybrid system (EHS). It is compatible with both 1.5T and 2.0T longitudinal engines which form part of BYD’s Xiaoyun plug-in hybrid system. Currently the exact powertrain offering for the Shark is unknown and with the Bao 5 only the 1.5T is offered. Both engines have a high compression ratio, high thermal efficiency, and include advanced technologies such as a high-pressure fuel injection system. Maximum power of the 1.5T is 143 kW (194 hp) while for the 2.0T it’s 180 kW (245 hp). The DMO system can achieve fuel consumption of 7.8 l/100 km and a combined range of 1200 km. High efficiency, up to 99.5%, silicon carbide chips are used to control the PHEV system.
Inside the truck is similar to the Bao 5. Typically for a BYD it has both a floating instrument screen and rotatable central infotainment screen.
Interior spy shots for the BYD Shark
We should learn all the missing details later this week and sales are likely to begin before the end of years with BYD concentrating on exports rather than domestic sales.

Today BYD released official interior pictures of its Sea Lion 07, an SUV competitor to the Tesla Model Y. With an MIIT listing months ago the car must be now ready to begin sales and an announcement may well be made at this week’s Beijing Auto Show.

In many ways the Sea Lion 07 is little more than a redesign of the Song L but with the range now divided into the Ocean and Dynasty series and sold separately that’s the way it goes. The Sea Lion 07 measures in slightly smaller than the Song L at 4830, 1925, and 1620 mm (l/w/h), and rides on a wheelbase of 2930 mm.
Interior pictures show the Sea Lion 07 to be surprisingly luxurious with the overall design language is similar to the Qin L. Although the instrument screen is embedded in the flowing dashboard the Sea Lion 07 retains BYD’s signature floating rotatable screen mounted on the center of the dash. There’s a four-spoke steering wheel which contains quite a lot of buttons. On the center console is a crystal gear lever which is also surrounded by more buttons.

Not only does the BYD Sea Lion 07 have leather perforated seats but leather appears to be also used to wrap the door panels, steering wheel and other touch points. The seats gain heating, ventilation and massage functions. There is also a Dynaudio sound system.
Buyers will have a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. Lower spec cars use a 170 kW peak power motor which gives the car a top speed of 210 km/h. A more powerful motor drives higher spec versions giving a top speed of 225 km/h thanks to the motor’s 230 kW peak power. Likely only one model in the range will feature 4WD and this version adds a 160 kW motor to the front axle to complement the 230 kW motor, top speed remains at 225 km/h but acceleration is likely to be below 4 seconds for this version.
While there is still no news on the battery capacities the Sea Lion 07 will of course use BYD’s blade battery. It will also benefit from CTB integration of the batteries. The car comes with front double wishbone suspension and rear five-link suspension along with getting the DiSus-C intelligent damping control system. Furthermore the Sea Lion 07 should also come with BYD’s ‘Eye of the Gods’ intelligent driving system.

Prices are expected to range from 200,000 to 260,000 yuan.

Last year’s Shanghai Auto Show saw the Hongqi E202 concept unveiled; this year’s Beijing Auto Show will see the production version now called EHS7 unveiled. Ahead of more information later this week we bring you pictures and details.

The EHS7 is the second car in the Hongqi New Energy series following on from the EH7 sedan and in many ways can be seen as an SUV version of this car. Both single and dual-motor versions will be available and we know that the motor setup is exactly the same as in the sedan. This means the rear wheel drive version gets a motor with maximum power of 253 kW while the all-wheel drive adds an additional 202 kW motor to the front. The battery packs are also from CATL and although we don’t know the sizes yet a good guess is that they will be exactly the same meaning that the EHS7 will offer 75, 85 and 111 kWh packs. Maximum speed is 200 km/h.
What’s not apparent from the pictures is just how large an SUV the Hongqi EHS7 is; length is 4925 mm with width and height of 1950 and 1680 mm respectively. At 3000 mm the wheelbase is exactly the same as on the EH7.

Hongqi EHS7 interior spy shots plus MIIT listing pictures
The Hongqi EHS7 will come with features including an advanced safety chassis system and 800V architecture giving fast charging. MIIT listing pictures show that some versions will gain Lidar and it is expected that the EHS7 should have a capable intelligent driving system.
Design wise the car is remarkably close to the concept seen last year with largely only changes to the front and back making the EHS7 look more production like. Black side pillars are optional on the production version.

Spy shots of the interior show that it also quite closely resembles that of the concept although in not quite so gawdy colors. The butterfly screen setup seems the same as in the EH7 and so the EHS7 will likely have a 6-inch LCD instrument panel and a 15.5-inch central control screen along with a augmented reality HUD. Presumably powering the car’s system is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Already spotted at the Beijing Auto Show venue is a poster for the launch of the Hongqi EHS7.

Electric Cars Pass the Tipping Point to Mass Adoption in 31 Countries
Once 5% of new-car sales go fully electric, everything changes — according to a Bloomberg Green analysis of transitions underway across four continents.

New technologies have a tendency to blindside. When color TVs were introduced in the 1950s, for example, they seemed like a flop. The devices were expensive, programming was scarce, and after a decade on the market few homes had one. Then suddenly prices dropped, a ratings war ensued, and in just a few years most US households were watching The Jetsons in its futuristic palette.
A comparable shift is currently underway with electric vehicles, according to a Bloomberg Green analysis of adoption rates around the world. By the end of last year, 31 countries had surpassed what’s become a pivotal EV tipping point: when 5% of new car sales are purely electric. This threshold signals the start of mass adoption, after which technological preferences rapidly flip.

When we first completed this analysis in 2022, only 19 countries had passed the 5% tipping point. Last year, that number soared as EVs spread across four continents. For the first time, some of the fastest-growing markets were found in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. The trajectory laid out by countries that came before them shows how EVs can surge from 5% to 25% of new cars in under four years.

This month, the domestically produced Volvo EX30 made its official debut, and the new vehicle will be showcased to the public for the first time at the Beijing Auto Show starting on the 25th. The Volvo EX30 is a brand-new compact electric SUV and the smallest SUV model ever produced by Volvo; however, CarNewsChina reported on spy shots of the vehicle early last year. Built on the SEA architecture from Geely, the car features a short front and rear overhang design, giving it a sleek appearance.

The Volvo EX30 continues the brand’s iconic “Scandinavian design” style. The most prominent feature of the front end is the “T”-shaped headlights with a grid-like light source. The front grille adopts a closed design but retains the Volvo logo, famously known as the “safety belt.”
The Volvo EX30 has smooth body curves, and the A, B, and C pillars are designed with a smoked black style. It is equipped with large-sized low-drag wheels and side skirts with anti-scratch decorative strips. Notably, the vehicle does not feature concealed door handles.

Moving to the rear of the car, the new model still follows the Volvo family’s design language. It features vertically split taillights, with a circular ring-shaped lighting element at the bottom, representing the “Volvo Asia Pacific” brand identity. The vehicle measures 4233/1838/1555 mm, with a wheelbase of 2650 mm. The overall size and wheelbase are slightly shorter than the popular Volvo XC40.
The interior of the Volvo EX30 continues the minimalist design philosophy. The classic 12.3-inch vertical central display screen is retained, while the buttons on the three-spoke multifunction steering wheel have been replaced with touch-sensitive controls. The air vents and a simple, smooth central armrest are also designed to be hidden. The vehicle features minimal physical buttons. The dashboard has a 1.2-meter Harman Kardon sound panel which will should create an impressive sound experience.
The EX30’s interior design follows a centralized principle to maximize space utilization within its compact dimensions. The center console has a sliding and retractable cup holder or phone holder, providing storage space for front and rear passengers. Additionally, there is a large panoramic sunroof measuring 2.1 square meters.

As a distinctive compact SUV, the vehicle offers five exterior colors, four interior themes, and five ambient lighting options. The seats, dashboard, and door panels incorporate recyclable and renewable materials, including recycled denim fabric, plastic derived from old window frames and blinds, flax fiber extracted from flax seeds, wool blend fabric containing 70% recycled polyester fibers, and structured knit seat materials with recycled plastic components.
In terms of safety, the Volvo EX30 is equipped with an open-door warning system. When the vehicle’s doors are opened, the system detects the presence of cyclists or other road users and emits visual and auditory alerts. Furthermore, the domestically produced model will feature L2+ level intelligent driving assistance functions, including the Pilot Assist navigation assistance system and parking assistance.
Based on previous domestic registration information, two versions of the powertrain were reported with power outputs of 115 kW and 200 kW. The EX30 will be available with two battery pack options, offering capacities of 49 kWh and 66 kWh, respectively. The pure electric range will come in three variants: 410 km, 540 km, and 590 km.
The EX30 will also have a four-wheel drive dual-motor version, featuring a maximum motor power of 315 kW and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It achieves a range of 590 km under the comprehensive CLTC (China’s standardized testing) test cycle. Fast charging will allow the vehicle to reach 10% to 80% charge in approximately 26 minutes.

The EV version of the JAC T9 Hunter pickup truck has been spied getting ready for its Beijing Auto Show launch. It will be one of the first proper fully electric pickup trucks available featuring a dual motor four wheel drive setup. It is however based on an ICE truck.

The JAC T9 is a mid-sized pickup that’s been available since 2020 and which underwent a facelift last year. It has also been well known since last year that JAC were developing an EV version and a prototype has been previously shown. The production version though looks significantly different to the prototype making it look distinct from the ICE version – the prototype looked fundamentally the same bar a few stickers and color changes.
At the front the T9 pickup – Hunter is a name primarily used in the Chinese market – in its EV form looks very different now to the ICE version. Firstly the large grille on the ICE version is now closed off with the JAC logo lower down. Although the cladding around the grille is the same it seems to fit the new look far more than on the ICE version of the T9. Looking at the 18-inch wheels they now have low drag coverings to try to boost range. ICE versions of the T9 had a roll cage and side rails on the pickup bed complete with JAC logo in the roll cage. This setup is gone on the EV version with just simple chrome rails on top of the side of the bed along with what looks like a black fairing around the back of the cab window.

The EV version of the T9 measures in at 5620 mm long, 1965 mm wide, 1920 mm high, and comes with a 1810 mm long cargo box. Power comes from a 70 kW peak power motor with 176 Nm torque on the front axle and a more powerful 160 kW motor at the rear which can deliver 342 Nm of torque. Battery power comes from an 88.02 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack which can give the truck a CLTC range of 500 km.
Inside the EV version of the T9 differs little from its ICE version with the main difference seeming to be that it now has a rotating dial for gear selection on the center console rather than a more traditional stick. The truck comes with the Zhiling 3.0 interface, voice control, dual-mode navigation, wireless mobile phone charging, 220V power outlet, and electric seats.

JAC are believed to be also working on a PHEV version of the T9 which is set for launch in 2025. Furthermore JAC already sell an EV version of its smaller T8 truck including to overseas markets such as Kenya.
