Geely to Sell $1.32 Billion of Volvo Truck Shares

Craig Trudell, Bloomberg News

<p> </p>

(Bloomberg) -- Shares of truckmaker Volvo AB dropped as much as 5.9% in Stockholm on Friday on news that China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group had sold the entirety of its Class B shares, worth about 14.1 billion Swedish kronor ($1.3 billion).
In a statement Thursday, Geely said the divestment is “in accordance with its long-term strategy” and that it will remain Volvo’s second-largest investor with 88.5 million A shares.
“Geely Holding’s strategic adjustment and inclusion of AB Volvo in its automotive manufacturing and investment portfolio is part of the group’s risk management and diversified investment strategy,” the company said.
Geely sold the 49.5 million shares at 285.9 kronor a share, a 2.2% discount from its closing price, through BofA Securities, Goldman Sachs Bank Europe and Barclays. In Hong Kong, Geely’s listed arm fell more than 3% on Friday.
Volvo reported first-quarter operating profit that beat analysts’ expectations on Wednesday, as the truckmaker offset waning orders by charging higher prices. The company has been reducing production as demand returns to more typical levels following a post-pandemic recovery period.
Geely pared its stake in Volvo in January and also sold some of its holding in Volvo Car AB in November. The holding company behind one of China’s most prominent carmakers early this year had to bail out Polestar, the struggling electric-vehicle manufacturer it started along with Volvo Car.

History has been made over the period April 1-14, sales of new energy vehicles (NEV) exceeded half of all car sales in China. New energy vehicles is a Chinese umbrella term encompassing a number of types but in reality means largely pure electric vehicles and PHEVs.

Figures from the Passenger Association show that retail sales during the period were 516,000 down 11% year-on-year and down 3% month-on-month, which are not the greatest of figures. However, of these 260,000 were NEVs which is an increase of 32% YOY and 2% MOM. This makes the NEV share of sales 50.39%.
Previously the Economist Intelligence Unit predicted that NEVs wouldn’t make up over half of sales until 2028. And the Chinese Federation of Passenger Cars only predicts a 40% penetration rates for 2024. Based on that prediction sales would be in the region of 12 million this year.

Obviously this is just the result for two weeks of the year but there are indications that this result will extend for the year as well. Last month Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD, predicted that the result would be achieved within the next three months.
Crowds of people on and waiting to get on the Yangwang stand at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. Yangwang is a new premium brand from Chinese producer BYD.
Furthermore, wholesale rates support the trend with a penetration rate of 50.19%. During the period wholesale sales were 534,000 cars up 13% YOY but down 9% MOM. Of these NEVs contributed to 268,000 of the total an increase of 43% YOY and up 8% MOM.
Against this background there is a drop in the sales of ICE cars and this is being felt particularly by the joint ventures in China. Last year SAIC GM sales fell be 14.5%, GAC Honda’s by 13.7% and SAIC Volkswagen by 8%. March data shows that ICE cars that in past were sales champions had rapidly falling sales with results like the Toyota Camry down by 59.2% and VW Lavida down by 36.4%.

Wang Chuanfu also recently made another prediction that the JV’s would be left with only 10% market share and this prediction from these results also seems to be playing out.

BYD Yuan UP was launched in China on 26 March 2024. It is the latest addition to the BYD Dynasty series and has a starting price of 96,800 yuan (13,400 USD). The affordable compact SUV targets many consumers, from students to young families. Let’s look closer at the car and how the test drive experience looks in China.

Booking for a test drive
In China, you need to make an online reservation for a test drive. It is best to book 2 to 3 days in advance via BYD’s official website or third-party app to ensure the car you want to test drive is available. A sales representative will call you to confirm the booking.

When I arrived at the BYD showroom in Zhuhai, I noticed only the Dynasty series cars were displayed. That includes the Song L, Destroyer 05, Yuan Plus (Atto 3), and the Yuan UP. Interestingly, BYD displayed its Ocean series in another showroom. This only made sense because BYD offered such a wide range of vehicles.
First Impressions
Our test car was the 401km upper trim BYD Yuan UP, priced at 119,800 yuan (16,500 USD). At first glance, the Yuan UP reminded me of the Smart #1 because of its similar dimensions and rear roof lines. Its dimensions are 4310/1830/1675 mm, and its wheelbase is 2620 mm. Walking around the new car, I noticed all the panels lined up well, and BYD didn’t cut corners despite the price tag.

The Interior
Upon entering the Yuan UP, I first noticed the interior was pleasant. It didn’t have the funky design of the Atto 3, which wasn’t to everyone’s taste. The materials used throughout the interior felt premium. It did not remind me of an entry-level vehicle in any way.
The car had an 8.8-inch LCD instrument cluster and BYD’s signature 12.8-inch rotating center screen, which can be operated via voice commands. The UI felt smooth. A HUD is optional. The doors have ambient lights. The center console houses essential controls and a wireless charging pad.
The driver’s seat was surprisingly comfortable. It was covered in perforated leatherette, which provided me with proper lumber support. The rear seats have decent space and three separate headrests. The headroom and legroom were comfortable and did not feel cramped. However, this compact SUV makes the rear seats more suitable for two adults and one child.
The panoramic sunroof brightened the inside of the cabin and made it seem even more spacious.
Storage
There is no frunk when it comes to storage space. The boot space isn’t big and is visually similar to the Dophine.
Behind the Wheel
We took the Yuan UP for a spin to see how it performed in urban conditions. The Yuan UP uses e-Platform 3.0 integrated with CTB (Cell-to-body battery integration) technology. When accelerating at the traffic lights, the 130 kW e-motor felt nice and quick. It can hit 0 – 100 km/h in under 8 seconds and weighs 1,540 kg. Steering felt precise, and the vehicle maintained stability through corners. Despite the accurate steering, there is a drawback. The steering felt light and provided little to no feedback from the road. This is a command issue with entry-level EVs. Even after switching to sports mode, I still found the steering lighter than I prefer.
The visibility was good due to the large windows and thin A-pillars. I did not find noticeable blind spots. The BYD Yuan UP features a MacPherson suspension in the front axle and a torsion beam in the rear. Turning corners and over bumps did not cause the rear passengers discomfort.
As an audiophile, the 8-speaker system in the top trim did not entertain my ears. I wasn’t expecting the thumbing bass to shake the doors, but my ears did not detect any bass from the audio system. Then again, when you consider the price tag. Could I really complain?
Battery Range
According to BYD, the 45.1 kWh battery can provide 401 km CLTC on a full charge. From experience, that will translate to roughly 320 km on a single charge. Depending on your lifestyle, a single charge should be sufficient for 5 – 7 days for most people.
Safety Features
BYD has equipped the Yuan UP with safety features, including advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise
Conclusion
The BYD Yuan UP is a well-balanced compact SUV suitable for daily urban driving. I was surprised by the comfort and how much tech the little SUV offered. It is a good example of an affordable vehicle that does not have to feel cheap. Its budget-friendly cost might also appeal to individuals seeking to transition to electric cars without breaking the bank. It will only be a matter of time for it to be launched outside of China like its peers, the Atto 3 and Dolphin.

BYD names its 1st pickup truck model BYD Shark

BYD's first new-energy pickup truck is officially named BYD Shark, built on the DMO super hybrid off-road platform, the company said.

BYD's (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) first new energy pickup truck is officially named BYD Shark, built on the DMO super hybrid off-road platform, the new energy vehicle (NEV) maker announced today on Weibo.
The BYD Shark will be sold globally, the company said.

" style="box-sizing: inherit; border: 0px !important; max-width: 100%; visibility: hidden !important; position: absolute !important; left: 0px !important; top: 0px !important; width: 0px !important; height: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important;">

The NEV maker annouced the DMO platform when it unveiled the Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand on August 16, 2023, where O stands for off-road and DM for dual mode.

BYD's Weibo doesn't mention much more, with its poster showing "BYD Shark with DMO technology coming soon."
Earlier this month, CnEVPost obtained several spy shots of the BYD pickup truck wrapped in camouflage, showing some of its details.
The pickup is positioned as a mid-size model, out-sizing the Toyota Hilux, according to a person familiar with the matter.
In China, pickup trucks are categorized as light trucks and are subject to many restrictions compared to regular passenger car models, including sedans, SUVs and MPVs.
This could be one of the reasons why BYD is only considering a pickup truck after launching dozens of passenger cars, and why the model will be built for the global market.
Among the local automakers, Geely officially announced the Radar brand on July 12, 2022 along with its first model, the RD6 electric pickup truck. The model went on sale in China in October 2022, with first deliveries in late November 2022.
Radar has not done much marketing for the RD6 in China and seems to be focusing its efforts on international markets, having launched the RD6 in Laos last November.
