The third model from Smart will debut at the Beijing Auto Show next week with the Smart #5 concept. The production model should be seen and listed in the second half of this year. Before that we bring you art concept to preview what we will see on April 25.

Riding on the Geely Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) electric car platform the Smart #5 will be the largest car yet from the Geely led reboot of the Daimler-Benz founded brand. From the concept sketch shots and spy shots we can see that not only is the Smart #5 the largest SUV from the brand so far but it is also boxy and quite daring in looks pushing the car away from the brand’s city origins to something with a more outdoorsy look.
Concept artwork for the Smart #5
In keeping with this outdoorsy look the concept at least will have a range of outdoor leisure activity accessories, which from the concept art look as if they could conceivably make it to production.

Roof mounted pocket knife is very concept but the accessories could make it to production
A mid-sized electric SUV the Smart #5 has short front and rear overhangs to maximize internal space in a relatively compact car. The car features a bold and muscular body design.
Geely’s SEA platform has been used in a diverse range of cars running all the way from the Smart #1 to the Lotus Eletre and will also underpin the Smart #5. For the first time in a Smart it will use 800V architecture which should give the car much improved charging times. CLTC range is expected to be over 600 km and there should be both single and a dual motor (Brabus) versions.
Art for the concept shows the front seats including a ‘queen’ type seat for the passenger complete with leg rest. From spy shots of the interior we know the production car will feature a long dual screen consisting of an infotainment unit and an entertainment screen for the passenger. This differs significantly from the current Smart setup although the steering wheel does look similar to the one in the Smart #3.

The car will have Lidar and feature Pilot Assist 3.0 which will give urban NOA (navigation on autopilot) capability. Powering the system is Nvidia Orin chip and Pilot Assist 3.0 should be launched before the end of 2024.

Earlier this week we brought you the unveiling of the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 (Leopard 8) and we now know that the car should launch in the third quarter of this year and be priced around 500,000 yuan (69,050 USD). Also we now know more information about the BYD brand’s flagship SUV before its unveiling to consumers at next week’s Beijing Auto Show.

The new car will form a 358 group together with the Bao 3 and Bao 5 to meet different consumer needs and improve the sales performance of the Fang Cheng Bao brand. Currently only the Bao 5 is on sale having launched in November last year.
Like the Bao 5 the forthcoming Bao 8 rides on BYD’s DMO super hybrid off-road platform which also underpins BYD’s forthcoming pickup truck. A PHEV it has combined system power of over 500 kW and Chinese media believe it to have a 2.0T engine at the heart of the PHEV system, rather than the 1.5T unit in the Bao 5. However seeing as the combined power figure for the Bao 5 with a 1.5T is 505 kW Car News China currently believes this is unlikely. Fuel consumption is 7.8 l/100 km.

Key elements of the DMO platform include a non-load-bearing frame specially designed for hybrids which is then matched with a longitudinal high-performance engine in the PHEV system. It uses cell to chassis (CTC) technology which helps reduce weight while increasing rigidity. According to BYD having CTC technology integrates the battery with a high-strength steel frame which enhances battery safety in off-road conditions. Furthermore, the Bao 8 uses the DiSus-P active hydraulic suspension system as used in the Yangwang U8.
Currently the only known dimension of the Bao 8 is the 2920 mm wheelbase but estimates for the others put the car at about 5200 mm long including the external spare tire, around 2000 mm wide and 1900 mm high.
According to BYD’s blurb the design has a ‘future starship aesthetic’ and the car seen is obviously close to the production version of the Bao 8. At the front the headlights flow into the large grille. Unusually the front hood is actually indented in the middle while the bumper is a continuation of the design seen with the Bao 5. From the side we can see the Bao 8 has a floating roof design and the car has a wide body and strong shoulders. The window ratio is 3:1 giving occupants a good field of view. Apparently the tire cover at the back is inspired by planetary rings and there are chunky rear light clusters.

The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 will be available in both 6 and 7 seat versions. It will come with the Eye of the Gods high-end intelligent driving system, which will support urban as well as high-speed NOA (navigation on autopilot).

The Chery Tansuo 06 C-DM will launch at the Beijing Auto Show next week. Tansuo (探索) means Discovery or Explore in English and the car is the production version of the TJ-1 C-DM shown at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show. A PHEV it has 120 km all-electric range under the CLTC cycle and reportedly a combined range of 1300 km under WLTC, fuel consumption is 4.9 l/100 km.

The car is based on the ICE version of the Tansuo and unlike previous spy shots the car now has a waterfall grille. Interestingly the daytime running lights have a checkered pattern like a racing flag – the brake light cluster at the back echoes this. From the side the Chery Tansuo 06 C-DM has hidden door handles and a floating roof design.
Inside the dashboard of the Chery Tansuo 06 C-DM has a 13.2-inch infotainment screen which comes with Chery’s colorful AI assistant system. For the driver there is both a smaller LCD instrument screen and a wide HUD. Powering the cockpit is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. The infotainment screen allows functions such as karaoke, playing games and watching videos. Front seats have heating and ventilation with the driver’s seat also gaining a massage function along with position memory.

Powering the Chery Tansuo 06 C-DM is the Kunpeng Super Hybrid C-DM system consisting of an Acteco 1.5TGDI high-efficiency hybrid engine, continuously variable super hybrid DHT, along with a hybrid intelligent electric management system. Thermal efficiency of the engine is 44.5% and it uses the Miller cycle along with having fourth generation intelligent thermal management. The engine provides 115 kW power and 220 Nm torque. Details about the electric components of the PHEV powertrain are still not known. However, the system has five driving modes consisting of all-electric, range extension, direct engine drive, parallel connection and energy recovery.

The car was previously expected to launch much sooner, the ICE version has been available since August last year priced 116,900 – 139,900 yuan (16,150 – 19,300 USD). Deliveries are likely to be not far behind the Beijing Auto Show launch. Prices for the PHEV will carry a premium to the ICE prices.

The 4-seat Zeekr 009 Glory Edition minivan from Geely Group was launched in China with 580 kW (777 hp), 702 km of range, and a starting price of 789,000 yuan (109,000 USD). It is 29,000 yuan (4,000 USD) cheaper than the China-made Volvo EM90 minivan based on Zeekr 009. The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition will start deliveries on May 19.

Zeekr is a young Chinese brand launched by Geely Group in 2021. Its current model line comprises four models: the Zeekr X crossover, the Zeekr 001 liftback, the Zeekr 007 sedan, and the Zeekr 009 minivan. Today, Zeekr launched the latest addition to its line, the Zeekr 009 Glory Edition minivan, aimed at wealthy businessmen.

More on Zeekr 009 Glory Edition

The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition is based on the SEA architecture that underpins every other Zeekr-branded model. With a few exceptions, it follows the exterior styling of the ‘regular’ 009 minivan. The Glory Edition adopts new 20-inch wheels and a LiDAR sensor on the roof. It also comes with a blackened front grille, which is standard. The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition boasts hefty dimensions of 5217/2024/1812 mm and a wheelbase of 3205 mm.

Inside, the Zeekr 009 Glory Edition has four seats with a 2 + 2 layout. For clarity, the standard variant of this minivan has six seats with a 2 + 2 + 2 layout. The second row of the Zeekr 009 Glory Edition has two independent captain chairs with leg support. They are heated, ventilated, and have a massage function. A large center tunnel between the seats is equipped with a touchscreen, fridge, and two independent safes.
The main feature of the second row is a large 43-inch screen in front of the passengers. Zeekr has previously applied for patent images of this monitor’s frame. According to brand officials, it also acts as an additional stiffener, enhancing the 009’s torsional rigidity. Other interior upgrades include enhanced materials and a 31-speaker Yamaha sound system. Its suspension system also has a dual-chamber air suspension.

Zeekr 009 Glory Edition powertrain

The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition adopts the 800V platform of the all-new 001 liftback launched earlier this year. It offers a dual-motor 4WD with a 270-kW electric motor in the front and a 310-kW e-motor in the rear. The combined power output of this system reaches 580 kW (777 hp, 788 ps). The peak torque is 810 Nm, which is good for a zero-to-hundred acceleration time of 3.9 seconds. It makes the Zeekr 009 Glory Edition one of the quickest MPVs in the world.

The 4-seat minivan adopts a 108-kWh ternary NMC battery from CATL. The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition’s CLTC range is 702 km. Thanks to the 800V platform, it can charge from 10% to 80% in 11.5 minutes via 5C 560-kW charging. Another notable feature of the Zeekr 009 Glory Edition is a 60-kW discharge function. With this function, it can charge other electric vehicles.

Zeekr 009 Glory Edition price tag

The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition is available in a single variant at a price of 789,000 yuan (109,000 USD). It is 201,000 yuan (27,800 USD) more expensive than the top-trim level of the standard Zeekr 009. However, it is 29,000 yuan (4,000 USD) cheaper than the Volvo EM90, which is just a Zeekr 009 rebadge. Moreover, the Volvo EM90 offers a single electric motor and fewer functions. So, the Volvo minivan is clearly non-competitive.
The Zeekr 009 Glory Edition will start deliveries on May 19. Customers who book it for 50,000 yuan (6,900 USD) will enjoy a lifetime Zeekr AD autonomous driving subscription, lifetime roadside assistance, a 20-kW AC home charger, and a lifetime warranty for the first owner.

Model 3 needs to be imported from China as Gigaberlin only makes Model Y.

Thanks for pointing that out. Once BYD's Hungary factory is up and running Tesla will have serious competition. Hungary has much cheaper cost of labor and they can't tariff import from Hungary because of EU.

There are no import tariffs. It's all talk and no walk.
