The market was mostly up in China during the 15th week of the year, April 8-14, with Zeekr being an exception. BYD registered 50,800 units, up 12%, Tesla 6,200 EVs, up 230%, Nio 2,500 EVs, up about 20% and newcomer Xioami 2,400 EVs, up about 120% from the previous week.

The weekly sales data were published by Li Auto, which recently stopped releasing the reports. Chinese outlet Dongchedi took over and started publishing the sales every Tuesday. The background data are weekly insurance registrations. The numbers are rounded and present new energy vehicles (NEV), the Chinese term for BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs (range extenders). To be completely precise, it also includes hydrogen vehicles (FCEVs), but their sales are almost non-existent in China.
BYD got the first spot as usual, registering 50,800 units, up 12.39% from 45,200 units in the previous week. In the first half of the month, BYD sold 96,000 vehicles between April 1 and 14.

Li Auto secured the second position, with 7,200 units registered, marking a significant increase of 29.26% from 5,570 units in the previous week. Throughout the first half of the month, Li Auto managed to sell 12,770 vehicles between April 1 and 14.
Li Auto sales breakdown:
  • Li L7: 3,300 units (SUV)
  • Li L9: 1,600 units (SUV)
  • Li L8: 1,300 units (SUV)
  • Li L6: 750 units (SUV)
  • Li Mega: 260 units (MPV)
Tesla claimed the third spot with 6,200 units, showing an impressive surge of 229.79% compared to the 1,880 units in the previous week. Within the initial two weeks of April, Tesla achieved sales of 8,080 vehicles.

Tesla sales breakdown:
  • Model Y: 4,600 units
  • Model 3: 1,600 units

Aito stood fourth, recording 4,900 units, indicating a growth of 18.36% from 4,140 units previously. In the first half of April, Aito sold a total of 9,040 vehicles.
Stellantis-backed Leapmotor secured the fifth position, with 4,000 units registered, marking a growth of 23.84% from 3,230 units in the previous week. Between April 1 and 14, Leapmotor managed to sell 7,230 vehicles.
Zeekr saw a decrease of 16.15%, registering 2,700 units compared to 3,220 units in the previous week. In the first half of April, Zeekr sold a total of 5,920 vehicles.
Nio recorded 2,500 units, marking a growth of 18.48% from 2,110 units previously. Nio managed to sell 4,610 vehicles between April 1 and 14.
Nio sales breakdown:

  • Nio ES6: 750 units (SUV)

Yesterday we brought you word of the new facelift for 2024 Haval H6 along with some teaser shots. Today we go one better and give you pictures of the exterior plus powertrain details.

It is now pretty clear from these pictures that the 2024 Haval H6 is a facelift rather than a new generation with the side being very little different to the current version. Instead all major changes are reserved for the front and rear.
The front grille covers a large area and has a quite distinctive pattern and prominent Haval badge. Underneath at the bottom is an air inlet. Light extensions go down to around the line extending from the top of the air inlet. With the new running lights the light clusters create a 7 like shape. The ‘starlight’ headlight consists of 54 LED bulbs, with the beam from each light group reaching 110 meters and 190 meters respectively.

At the back the biggest difference is that the lights are no longer through type giving space for the Haval logo between the two clusters. The tailgate itself is a similar shape to the existing car and there is spoiler at the top.
Although the facelifted car still uses the same engines as the 2023 Haval H6 they have been upgraded. In the case of the 1.5 turbo unit power is now 130 kW. For the 2.0T version power has increased from 155 kW to 170 kW and fuel consumption is now 8.1 l/100 km. Both engines use a 7-speed wet dual clutch transmission. Hybrid and PHEV versions of the facelift are likely to follow on soon.

Length, width and height of this car are 4703, 1886, 1730 mm respectively, and the wheelbase is 2738 mm. This compares to 4653, 1886, 1730 dimensions on a 2738 mm for the original H6. So it seems that the 50 mm increase in length all goes into the overhangs.

The Haval H6 is one of Great Wall’s best selling cars although the days when it was the best selling SUV in China are gone. The debut of the facelift is likely to be next week’s Beijing Auto Show and it should keep the car going until the fourth generation H6 comes along.

During the Fang Cheng Bao Spring Conference, the company revealed three new EVs: two SUVs, the Super 3 (Bao 3) and Bao 8, and a speedster Super 9 concept. The Super 9 was created by BYD’s Head of Design, Wolfgang Eggert, an ex-Lamborghini and Audi veteran, who conducted the conference.

Fang Cheng Bao is a high-end brand under BYD that focuses on electric SUVs. It has one car on the market – Bao 5 (Leopard 5), and it has previously teased two other SUVs, Bao 3 and Bao 8. The unveiling of the convertible sports car Super 9 was quite an easter egg.
The Fang Cheng Bao Super 9 concept is a good-looking two-seater with scissor doors. It is expected to be a battery electric vehicle (BEV), not a PHEV like Bao 5. The production version will be called Bao 9.

The car features a dual cockpit and integrated carbon fiber seats. The steering wheel looks more like something from a spacecraft.

The Super 9’s rear features dual tail lights shaped like the Fang Cheng Bao logo and a bridge-like rear spoiler. On the side of the car, you can notice the number 30, which points out the BYD company’s 30th anniversary.
Fang Cheng Bao is BYD’s third and latest brand, launched last summer. It is positioned under premium YangWang and above the Denza subbrands. BYD took a different sales approach with its new brands, replacing the traditional dealership model with direct-operated stores. BYD built 70 Fang Cheng Bao stores around China in 2023 and wants to bring that number to 150 in 2024. The Shenzhen-based company often takes over stores and showrooms of premium legacy brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Aston Martin.

Fang Cheng Bao Super 9 will debut publicly next week at the 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024). We will keep an eye on it.

Honda today unveiled a new EV series for China, Ye (烨), and says it will launch six models in the serics by 2027. Three of those cars were seen at the series launch in Beijing. These consist of the Dongfeng Honda S7 and the GAC Honda (P7) due to launch later this year along with the Ye GT concept which should be produced next year. Ye should be pronounced somewhat like the English word ‘Yeah.’

烨 (ye) means to ‘shine brilliantly’ and apparently represents “Honda’s desire to enable everyone who drives Ye Series models to unleash their innermost passions through the joy of driving, and let their individuality shine brilliantly.” The Ye series sits alongside the e:N series of EV models which already exist in China. Honda hasn’t said much about how the two ranges are positioned relative to each other but Car News China believes the Ye series represents a more high tech EV line. Adding to the confusion Dongfeng Honda launched its own EV brand, Lingxi, last year.
The three Honda Ye series cars seen on the stage at the Beijing launch.
Visually setting the new series apart from other Honda models is a new illuminated H logo designed exclusively for Honda’s next generation EV models. Honda says the Ye series uses new pure EV architecture exclusively developed for the series and based on the needs of Chinese users.

Stealing the show the Ye GT concept creates a low and wide Grand Tourer EV. The car was designed by the Chinese R&D team where the average age is just 32 years old. At the front there is a through light strip design. Behind the car are a number of mainstream Chinese suppliers withs CATL suppling the battery, Huawei the intelligent cockpit and iFlytek the voice control system.
Chinese suppliers behind the Honda Ye series of EVs.
Inside we can see that the design is not only futuristic but sporty as well. According to Honda the driver’s seat is designed to immerse the driver in a race driver like experience (Ed – just right for traffic jams on the gaojia).
Honda Ye GT concept
The front seat passenger gets a far-focus display which is meant to create the depth and experience of viewing a large screen. Currently Honda are claiming that it will be on the production version saying that it will be a first for a Honda car. Like with the 7 expect to see versions from both Dongfeng and GAC with sales currently meant to commence by the end of 2025.

Before that both the Ye P7 and Ye S7 are due to go on sale this year. Essentially the same car each has a slightly different front to give two supposedly different cars for each JV partner. The Dongfeng S7 version gets more aggressive three pronged LED running lights whereas the GAC P7 has a fuller light cluster with the LED running lights acting as outlining around the cluster. Each car will have two variants, a one motor rear wheel drive version along with a dual motor version.
The cars ride on the newly developed EV platform. Inside ambient lighting through LED lights in the instrument panel and door panels are controlled by an AI powered assistance. The interiors of the cars seem similar to the GT Concept. They come with dimming panoramic roof, headrest mounted speakers and a wireless charging pad. Safety comes from the Honda Sensing 360 package and the cars have Honda Connect 4.0 for Android phone connectivity.
Expect to see more of the cars at next week’s Beijing Auto Show.

Editor’s note:

Some years back Honda created two China only brands one for each JV. GAC had Everus while Dongfeng had Ciimo but neither amounted to much. Time will tell whether Ye amounts to anything more but at least it is a series rather than a cheap brand for outdated Honda models. The biggest problem will be how the series is perceived in relation to the e:N series. According to Honda there will be a total of 10 Honda branded EVs in China by 2027, with Ye making up six of those presumably the other four will be in the e:N series. Previously it was announced that there would be a total of 5 EVs in the e:N series by 2027.
Like all the OEMs with more than one joint venture Honda seems to be having problems satisfying the needs of each JV and this along with products that are rapidly losing competitivity is adding to the sales problems. Last year saw a 10% dip in sales for Honda over the year before.
Fast Technology is also reporting that there is a naming controversy among Chinese netizens with the character Ye (烨). It is due to the two radicals that make up the character. The first radical huo (火) means fire which is not great for an EV and I think the problem relates further to the second radical hua (华) which is part of one of the names for China, Zhonghua, and so I think Fast Technology is hinting the name could be interpreted as ‘burn China’ – not a great name from a Japanese brand. The argument sounds though a bit stupid, most Chinese characters are made up of radicals and the meaning of the new character changes. So the name Ye as Honda says means something like shining brightly and not anything else!

Fang Cheng Bao held the Spring Conference on April 16 and unveiled three new cars: the concept SUV Super 3 for the young generation, the flagship SUV Bao 8, and the supercar convertible Super 9.

Super 3/Bao 3

The entry-level Super 3 concept will be renamed Bao 3 once it reaches production. It is a mid-size, 4.7-meter-long, rugged, and exaggerated SUV focused on young buyers. Fang Cheng Bao claims that Super 3 “highlights the personality of young people.” It features a drone port on the roof, which, according to the company, provides a “car-to-sky” experience.
Super 3 (Bao 3)
Unlike its sister model, the Bao 5, which is a PHEV, the Bao 3 will be fully electric. As if the futuristic design were not enough, BYD calls the Bao 3’s chassis “Star Wars” inspired. It has hidden door handles and electronic rear-view mirrors. Wide wheel arches and a rear-mounted spare tire give it hard-core vibes.

Super 3/Bao 3 will debut publicly at Auto China 2024 in Beijing next week. CarNewsChina expects the price to be around 200,000 yuan (27,600 USD).

Bao 8

While the Bao 3 is set to be the entry-level to the Fang Cheng Bao family, the Bao 8 is expected to be the brand’s flagship SUV.
It is positioned as a large SUV and sits on BYD’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) hybrid platform. It will feature a three-row seat layout and be equipped with BYD’s Disus-P suspension system.

The boxy design resembles the flagship of its sister brand, YangWang U8. It also features a lidar on the top of the windshield. Bao 8 will most likely be a PHEV or EREV.
Once launched, it will compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser or Tank 700 Hi4-T, and CarNewsChina expects the base price to be around 500,000 yuan (69,000 USD).
Bao 8

Bao 5

Bao 5 (Leopard 5) SUV launched last November and delivered 3,550 units in March, up 53% from 2,310 units in February. It is positioned between upcoming Bao 3 and Bao 8, starting at 289,800 yuan (40,000 USD) in China.
BYD sold 3 million vehicles in 2023 and plans to increase to 3.6 million in 2024. Aside from the BYD badged cars, it has three new brands – relaunched Denza, Fang Cheng Bao, and YangWang.

Buick GL8, a joint venture between SAIC and GM, has been in production since 1999. On April 16th, it was announced that the popular and best-selling minivan would be introduced as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and hybrid version, with an official launch scheduled for April 27th. This development, which has been confirmed by its inclusion in the latest production catalog of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has generated significant interest among consumers. Many people are particularly intrigued by the PHEV version of the GL8, which cosmetically remains largely unchanged from the 2022 GL8 Century edition.

The recently unveiled Ministry of Industry and Information Technology images showcase the latest updates to the Buick GL8. The new GL8’s exterior design follows Buick’s signature aesthetic with a sleek appearance. The front of the vehicle features distinctive split headlights, integrated LED daytime running lights, and vertically oriented air vents on the bumper. The plug-in hybrid version boasts a grille adorned with horizontal chrome slats, while the hybrid model incorporates a mesh design. Additionally, the fog lamp area exhibits subtle variations in styling between the two versions.

The GL8’s side profile showcases hidden door handles. The plug-in hybrid variant also includes a charging port on the passenger side. Both models come equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels. The GL8 measures 5219/1878/1807 mm, with a wheelbase of 3088 mm. The plug-in hybrid version has a curb weight of 2390kg The rear of the vehicle features integrated taillights, with slight differences in the design of the lower bumper.

The interior design of the GL8 retains the spacious cabin associated with the Buick brand. According to previously leaked information, the Buick GL8 PHEV edition will offer a second-row folding table, a sliding central armrest, and the possibility of an integrated refrigerator. The seats maintain the comfort standards expected from Buick, and the high-end version will feature amenities such as airbag massage, pneumatic lumbar support, and damping shock absorbers.
In terms of powertrain options, the PHEV version of the GL8 incorporates a newly developed plug-in hybrid electric drive unit, a next-generation plug-in hybrid battery, and a 1.5-liter hybrid engine with a Miller cycle. The comprehensive power output reaches 292 kW, with a torque of 580 Nm. The GL8 PHEV edition offers an impressive combined range of 1370 kilometers, according to the CLTC (Chinese standardized testing).
With its hybrid powertrain, popular design, historic sales record, and spacious interior, the Buick GL8 PHEV version is poised to impact the market. When it is officially launched on April 27th, we will have more details regarding pricing and options.

Chery today unveiled pictures of its new Exeed E08. This new energy MPV is most probably all-electric and is set to debut at next week’s Beijing Auto Show. It will likely form part of the Exlantix series.

The Exeed 08 is the first car jointly developed by Exeed’s Europe and Shanghai design teams and is based on Exeed’s Wind Aesthetics 2.0 design language. Although a one box design it seems to be heavily streamlined and incorporates drag reducing features such as side-view cameras.
At the front the E08 has a design inspired by the ‘cyber butterfly’ family design. The front grille decoration itself is inspired by chandeliers and the headlight clusters take a shape similar to the letter F.

Side on the Exeed 08 has a very straight window line and the side itself is relatively flat bar a few crease lines. The rear doors are very wide and when open will allow direct access to the third row as well as the second. At the rear are boomerang shaped light clusters along with more lighting surrounding most of the tailgate window.
From the design we can assume that it is designed to compete with MPVs like the Li Mega and XPeng X9 although the price point of the Exeed E08 is likely to be lower.
Exeed currently sells both in China and in overseas markets and is a high-end brand under Chery. The range itself is quite confusing and is split into two sequences the main Exeed brand which contains both ICE and REEV (range extended EV) and another sequence Exeed Exlantix which contains both full EV and range extended versions.

The E08 is likely to join ES and ET in the Exlantix sequence which in China is known as Sterra. We believe that this is one of the cars, along with three other models, that were teased at the presales launch of the Exlantix ET. This means that E08 will likely be on Chery’s high-end E0X all electric platform. Prices will probably start from about 250,000 yuan (34,550 USD) and deliveries will unlikely commence before early next year.

For reference, the current Aito M5 measures 4770/1930/1625 mm, and the wheelbase is 2880 mm, available in EREV and EV versions. The CLTC comprehensive range is up to 1,425 km while the CLTC pure electric range is up to 255 km.

In March, 395 units of the Aito M5 were sold, according to the China Passenger Car Association, accounting for 1.62% of Aito’s sales, and ranking 202nd in SUV sales, dropping by 86 places from February. A few days ago we brought you the first information about the M-Hunter hard-core off road vehicle from Dongfeng. We now have some actual pictures and a whole lot more information about it ahead of next week’s unveiling at the Beijing Auto Show.

Said to be priced at over a million yuan (138,150 USD), if you need to ask you can’t afford it, the car goes all out on materials to provide the ultimate off-road car. It sits as part of Dongfeng’s M-Hero range, Mengshi in Chinese. That brand has its roots in the civilian version of China’s military ‘Hummer’ vehicle.
Echoing those roots the M-Hunter is meant to be equipped with a variety of military-grade black technology and aviation-grade carbon fiber materials. The aim is to produce a mass-produced off-roader for sales to private collectors of extreme performance vehicles.

Style wise it channels the look of the M-Hero 917 launched last year. Obviously from the pictures the M-Hunter is very much cut down to bare bones being nothing much more than a roll cage on wheels. Inside there are two bucket shaped sports seats although interestingly these seem to be electrically adjustable – judging from controls seen at the bottom of the seat. There are no rear seats with the space given over to two spare off-road tires.
At the front the M-Hunter has X shaped LED daytime running lights defining the headlights and there is also a luminous M brand logo. The front bumper features a steel guard bar and there are two red tow hooks. Underneath the plate is a T-Max EW12500 winch good for loads of up to 12,500 lbs (nearly 5,700 kg). The roof gains a storage rack and LED searchlights.
To reduce weight while increasing strength the M-Hunter has a tubular body structure. Rather than proper doors there are merely body guards. The wheels closed off low-drag styling is paired with professional off-road tires.

At the rear there are narrow tail lights another luminous brand logo along with another red tow hook.
When launched the M-Hunter will be the brand’s second EV. Fast Technology expect the car to have a three motor system with ultra-high torque.
Currently it is unclear whether the M-Hunter is fully electric or will be an extended range EV (EREV). The M-Hero 917 is available as both and the BEV has a 505 km CLTC range, while the EREV has a 1,032 km combined range. The EREV M-Hero 917 has three electric motors with 600 kW (816 hp) and so if Fast Technology is correct the M-Hunter may well have a similar setup. However the all EV M-Hero 917 has a four motor setup which might well make more sense for such as an extreme off-roader as the M-Hunter.
