Zeekr001 with [Israeli] Mobileye SuperVision™ test drive in Shanghai evening rush hour traffic

Mobileye is owned Intel based on Israel.

According to Wikipedia, their main client is Geely, Toyota, Ford, BMW, etc.

If Geely can do autonomous driving using their tech, why don't I see Ford, Toyota, and BMW on the road with autonomous driving system?

My eyes always look at other Chinese brands like Zeekr, Avatr, Robocar, etc... never seriously look at BYD.

But this video is really opening my eyes.

This is Japan EV of the year. If Japanese says so, it must be a really good car.

According to the driver, the car is extremely comfort, like sitting on a teddy bear and gliding the road. It's a superb car.

No wonder if this is Japan EV of the year, and it sells like a hotcake worldwide.

In Indonesia, you need months of waiting time to buy one.

Yesterday we brought news of Geely’s latest generation Aegis short blade battery, today we bring you more details about the battery. Firstly it seems the official name in English is just ‘New Short Blade EV Battery Technology’ according to Geely who don’t mention the Aegis name.

Although the most important specification is still the 192 Wh/kg energy density, there are now many more elements known about the battery, its capabilities and its safety. A lithium iron phosphate battery, Geely claims it has best-in-class battery life, charging speed – and ultimate safety.
Geely’s short blade battery is 580 mm long which is about 40% shorter than a traditional long blade battery which results in less internal resistance and heat generation while increasing volume utilization by 50%.

The short blade battery in testing has achieved 3,500 charging cycles. This Geely claims is equivalent to charging and driving for 1 million kilometers. More importantly this is meant to have minimal impact on battery attenuation helping extend the useful life of the battery and improving residual values for second hand EVs. Geely without providing any details of how the figure was arrived at states that it reduces carbon emissions by 80,000 tons a year. To put the 1 million kilometers in perspective it is enough for a car to average 20,000 km a year for 50 years.
Another key claim of the new short blade battery is that it has super fast charging and stable low-temperature performance. Geely’s battery has charged 10-80% in 17 minutes 4 seconds with an average charging rate of 2.45C this is around 1.5 times faster than a long blade battery which takes around 26 minutes and has an average of 1.61C. EVs generally suffer range degradation with cold temperatures and with long blade batteries at a temperature of -30°C capacity retention rates average at 78.96% while for Geely’s new battery it retains 90.54% of its capacity.
This has been achievable by the use of long, thin carbon nanotubes in the battery to aid ion transmission together with additives to improve film permeability. These changes make it easier for the lithium ions to travel between the electrodes so improving fast charging performance.

The battery has passed six extreme tests which include: seawater corrosion immersion, extreme cold environment, high-frequency pack bottom scraping, 26-ton overweight rolling, single-pack side collision, and fire roasting. These were carried out by the China Automotive Center and Geely’s battery passed them all. The tests are to a higher standard than required by the national standard and in the case of the scraping test requires it to be carried out 3 times, the rolling test withstanding a 26 ton weight, cold weather test withstanding -35°C at the equivalent of 5000m elevation for 8 hours, and for the roasting test a fire of 1000°C for 130 seconds.
Geely’s own tests involved a simultaneous puncturing of the battery by eight nails and after an hour there was no effect. Similarly, Geely fired a standard issue (5.8 mm) Chinese army rifle round at the battery without thermal ignition.
Such results are possible because the short blade battery uses “a high-strength, high-thermal stability, high-heat-resistant diaphragm, with a highly stable separator paired with safe electrodes resulting in higher energy density and safety.” There is also self-developed self-fusing technology on the surface of the electrode which blocks a short circuit if there is an accident. An aluminium foil layer fuses into the battery diaphragm creating an insulating layer if the battery cell experiences extreme shock and is punctured. Geely says the battery has a “patented grid frame design, energy-absorbing cavity, three-layer sandwich bottom guard plate, CTB (cell to body) integration, thermal runaway control system, and multiple other safety features.”
Pass certificate for Geely’s short blade battery from CATARC
The new short blade battery will debut in the Geely Galaxy E5 SUV which will launch in early August. They will be used in both the 49.52 and 60.22 kWh packs delivering 440 and 530 kilometers CLTC range respectively. Also featured on the car is the Galaxy 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive system, and the E5 will have power consumption as low as 11.9 kWh/100 km.

The Neta L EV crossover (see specs) from Hozon Auto has entered the Chinese market with a starting price of 139,900 yuan (19,300 USD). It is a five-seat SUV with a CATL’s Shenxing LFP battery for 510 km range and a single e-motor in the rear axle for 227 hp.

Neta is a Chinese NEV mainstream brand launched in 2018 by Hozon Auto. It currently sells five models: Aya, X, S, GT, and L. The newest car from Neta is the L crossover. It was initially launched as an EREV (range extender) in April this year. In two months, Neta delivered 5,500 units of Neta L. And now, the all-electric variant of the L SUV has entered China.

Neta L EV specs

In terms of appearance, the Neta L EV stays in line with the EREV variant. It L has LED headlights, retractable door handles, a slanted roofline, and a single taillight unit. Dimensions of the Neta L EV are 4770/1900/1660 mm with a wheelbase of 2810 mm.

Inside, the entry-level Neta L has a single 15.6-inch screen and a small LCD screen mounted behind the D-shaped steering. The gear shifter hides behind the wheel. There are two cup holders and a wireless charging pad in the center tunnel of the Neta L. The top-trim level adopts a single cluster made of two 15.6-inch monitors. It looks quite similar to Li Auto cars. The L SUV also has 16 speakers, a fridge, and a folded table in the front passenger seat.
The Neta L EV has a 170-kW (227 hp) electric motor in the rear axle. Its peak torque reaches 310 Nm. This electric crossover speeds up to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. CATL’s Shenxing LFP battery pack for 68 kWh powers the electric motor. The Neta L can run up to 510 km on a single charge. It can be charged from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes. For clarity, the top-trim Neta L EREV has a 30-kWh pack from CATL for 210 km. A mixed range reaches 1300 km.

Neta L EV prices

The Neta L EV has three trim levels within a price range of 139,900 – 162,900 yuan (19,300 – 22,400 USD). It has appeared to be fairly affordable since the EREV variant of this SUV costs 129,900 – 159,900 yuan (17,900 – 22,000 USD). However, Neta currently struggles to raise its credibility among Chinese customers. It started as a cheap car maker back in 2018. And now it slowly moves upmarket, increasing the price of its cars.

Neta L in UAE
The Neta L EV can increase the demand for this model. However, it seems the EREV variant still will be more popular due to a mixed range of 1300 km, and a bit cheaper price. This year, Neta L will launch overseas. One of the key markets for this car is UAE.

Lidar is only on the range toppers and see the car not only equipped with 128-line Lidar but also an Nvidia Orin X chip. There are a total of 30 sensors and theoretically the car can achieve L3 driving assistance.

Range-extended versions use a four-cylinder 1.5 liter engine with maximum power of 68 kW. The electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and provides up to 170 kW power and 320 Nm of torque. Battery capacity is 28.4 kWh. Pure electric range is 200 km (CLTC) and the combined range 1095 km. WLTC fuel consumption is 6.19 l/100 km whereas using CLTC it’s 5.4 l/100 km.
The all-electric version has a 67.7 kWh battery and also a more powerful motor with 215 kW power and 360 Nm of torque. Maximum range is 520 km. 30-80% charging takes 15 minutes. It should be noted that the C16 is only available as a rear wheel drive car.
Currently there is no news as to whether the C16 will be one of the models offered in Europe. Although Leapmotor’s T series is meant to be the one more export-oriented, current plans call for the C10 to be exported to Europe.

Today Avatr published official interior pictures of its forthcoming Avatr 07 SUV. This has already created a lot of excitement with commentators on the Chinese Internet comparing it to a spaceship cockpit.

Where the front row scores highly is from its sheer symmetry and high-tech feel. Although the basic configuration is very similar to the Avatr 12, thanks to better outlining in the Avatr 07 it creates a very different feel.
The official picture shows the interior in a brown shade with golden highlights. Although, there is a floating central infotainment screen what really catches the eye is the wrap round screen at the back of the dashboard. Like with some older Citroens, the instrument panel is located in the center of this with the extremities given over to the side view camera screens – the Avatr 07 has cameras rather than mirrors.

We can also see dual wireless phone charging pads and twin drink holders with covers which presumably go down when drinks are inserted. The Avatr 07 will use Huawei’s HarmonyOS to control the cockpit. Notably, the cockpit appears devoid of physical buttons and so everything will be controlled via the touchscreen or voice.
It’s expected that the Avatr 07 will have in the region of 25 speakers, there are three visible on the rear door alone and Chinese media say that the sound system will come from a well-known British producer. The rear bench has a large fold down armrest with controls for adjusting angle, the heating, ventilation and massage functions along with the sun blind.
The Avatr 07 will come in both fully electric and range-extended versions and both will be available with single and dual motor options. A 115 kW 1.5 liter engine from Changan acts as the range extender. For the rear wheel drive version, a 231 kW motor provides power and for all-wheel drive versions a 131 kW motor is added to the front axle. Top speed is 190 km/h. The EREV reportedly uses a 39 kWh battery pack.

All electric versions have a 252 kW motor at the back with an additional 188 kW motor at the front for the all-wheel drive Avatr 07.
The Avatr 07 is likely to be launched in the third quarter based on the current amount of news.

Yesterday Li Auto opened its 500th supercharging station, 43 days since opening the 400th station. That would be an impressive figure were it not for Li Auto’s target calling for the launch of 2000+ supercharging stations by the end of 2024.

If Li Auto is going to achieve its target it will need to install an average of 250 supercharging stations a month during the second half of the year, which is approximately four times the current installation rate. Obviously, Li Auto is not suddenly going to be able to achieve that level in July meaning that by the end of the year the rate would need to be around 500 in a month to average it out.
Earlier this month Li Auto signed a deal with CNPC, China’s largest petroleum company, and under the deal charging piles will be installed at CNPC service stations across the country. This deal might yet mean that Li Auto can achieve the 2000+ target this year.

Until this year Li Auto could do no wrong with a string of hit products and sales records near monthly. However, progress for Li Auto seriously stalled this year. Previously, Li only sold range-extended SUVs but this year launched its first all-electric car, the Mega MPV. Sales have been less than expected, so much so that Li has pushed back the launch of further all-electric models to 2025 rather than later this year. On June 24 a class action was filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York on behalf of investors who acquired Li Auto securities between February 26, 2024 and March 20, 2024. The action is based on the claim that investors were misled by company announcements and that it overstated demand for the Mega. It should be remembered that Li Auto is listed on the Nasdaq.
Li Auto’s supercharging station is based on a 5C charger, unveiled at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show. ‘C’ refers to the charging multiplier meaning that a 5C charger can charge at a rate of five times assuming the battery is capable of such charging. The Mega (see specs) is fitted with CATL’s Qilin battery which is 5C capable and means that it can charge from 10-80% in as little as 10 minutes 36 seconds.
Under Li’s plans the 2000 supercharging stations will provide 10,000 charging piles, an average of five per station. This theoretically could mean charging a maximum of 25 cars per hour at each station. However, the stations are open to all EVs and most EVs in China do not support such fast charging meaning they will be taking up the pile for considerably longer than 10 minutes.

Map showing the current coverage of Li Auto supercharging stations
Of the 500 superchargers installed to date, 416 are situated on highways which have been one of the biggest obstacles to EV motoring in China. Highways covered are the G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, G15 Shenhai Expressway-Shanghai-Haihai Section, and G25 Changshen Expressway-Hangzhou-Shenzhen Section. The expansion plan calls for superstations on the G1, G5, G30, G40, G42 and G45 along with additional sections of the G2, G4 and G15. The coverage aims to be 90% in key urban areas and more than 70% for national highways.

On June 27, BYD announced that the first batch of mass-produced new energy vehicles at its Uzbekistan factory – Song Plus DM-i Champion Edition – officially rolled off the production line. At the same time, BYD signed a green transportation cooperation initiative with the Uzbek government to jointly promote sustainable travel.

The BYD Uzbekistan plant.
The BYD Uzbekistan plant is located in the Jizzakh Region, a joint venture established in September 2023 between BYD and Uzbekistan’s state-controlled automobile group Uzavtosanoat JSC (UzAuto Motors). The plant manufactures both pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. More specifically, the first phase aims to manufacture two plug-in hybrid models, namely the BYD Song Plus DM-i Champion Edition (see spec here) and Destroyer 05 Champion Edition (see spec here). The annual production capacity in the first phase is expected to reach 50,000 vehicles to meet the sales demand in the Central Asian market.
Furthermore, the second phase will also have a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles and after the completion of the third phase, the production will reach 300,000 vehicles.

Production launch ceremony in Shenzhen, China
It is worth mentioning that on January 25 this year, Uzbek President Mirziyoyev visited BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen, and held a production launch ceremony for BYD’s Uzbekistan factory via video link with BYD President Wang Chuanfu, and jointly witnessed the production of the first car, the BYD Song Plus DM-i.
BYD’s overseas plans can be traced back to 2007. That year, BYD set the goal of “becoming the world’s number one automaker in 2025”. Then in 2017, BYD invested 290 million USD to build an electric bus factory in the United States. In that same year, BYD’s factory in Maharashtra, India was put into use with an annual production capacity of 180,000 vehicles, mainly manufacturing the BYD F0 and BYD e6 (see spec here). Moreover, on December 9 of that year, BYD signed an agreement with the Moroccan government to set up a factory in Tangier to produce batteries, large electric vehicles, and monorail electric trains.
Then in September last year, BYD invested in a factory in Thailand, which is BYD’s first overseas new energy vehicle production base with a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. In addition to Thailand in Southeast Asia and Uzbekistan in Central Asia, BYD has also completed the layout of overseas production bases in Brazil in South America and Hungary in Eastern Europe.

How fast the battery revolution in China is.

I thought all the battery problems, mostly will be solved beyond 2030.

But almost all complaints about EV battery has been solved in just a matter of 1-2 years.
