Egypt is preparing to receive the first batch of the Korean Al-Raad howitzer artillery
In the coming months, Egypt is preparing to receive the first batch of Korean K9A1EGY “Thunder” self-propelled howitzer systems, as the Korean company Hanwha has concluded sub-contracts with several companies to provide the components necessary to produce the first batch of Egyptian howitzers.
Last January, the Korean company signed a contract with STX worth $93 million to supply it with new SMV-1000 engines with a capacity of 1,000 horsepower, while an Australian company obtained a contract last year to supply the Korean company with armor steel used in the production of the first batch of Egyptian artillery systems. .
In parallel, Egypt is currently working, in cooperation with the South Korean company Hanwha, on transferring manufacturing technology and preparing production lines within Egyptian military factories to launch the local manufacturing phase, as Military Factory 200 will manufacture the tracked armored vehicle carrying a howitzer and support vehicles of ammunition and command vehicles, while the Military Factory 100 manufactures the 155/52 mm Korean gun barrel, as well as the armored steel used in production operations.
In addition to transferring the technology of manufacturing sensitive optical, electrical and electronic systems for the first time to manufacture them locally in Egypt, including the automatic fire management system (FCS), which is planned to be produced by the Arab International Optics Company, affiliated with the Egyptian Army’s National Service Projects Agency.
According to the contracts concluded between the Egyptian and Korean sides in 2022, Egypt will receive the first batch of howitzer artillery systems before the year 2025, provided that the components of this batch are jointly manufactured between Egypt and South Korea and then assembled in Egypt, followed by the implementation of all stages of manufacturing and production. In Egyptian military factories after the completion of technology transfer, Egypt will produce about 67% of the components of the artillery system within five years of launching the local manufacturing program.
Egypt aspires to become a regional center for exporting the Korean “Thunder” artillery system, which it will manufacture locally for African and Arab countries, as the Minister of Military Production stated, saying: “We have begun bilateral negotiations with a number of Arab and African countries wishing to acquire the K9A1 howitzer.”
In 2022, Egypt signed a contract worth $1.7 billion with the South Korean Hanwha Group for procurement, technology transfer, manufacturing and local production of the K9A1 EGY 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, known as “Thunder.”
The Korean artillery system consists of the K9A1 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, the K10 advanced ammunition supply vehicle, which works to re-ammunition the howitzers automatically, and the K11 command and control vehicle, which is designed and developed specifically for the Egyptian army.
