Indian Navy approves Mazagon Dock to build 6 submarines with German collaboration

You’re a democracy and so long as you do not put nukes on the sub Germany has zero issues.
Can't trust them..They recently refused to supply Engine for our light tank.

So that would mean some 8 disparate types in service each with their own logistics lime and training requirements?

Not really

Our present 7 Kilo and 4 U209 subs will retire by 2035

We will likely only have 9 Scorpenes , 6 U214 subs and 4 Arihant class SSBNs in 2035

That's 19 subs in total , which is about the same as today

I Am sure we can manage 3 different class of subs

Yes number wise same as today but firepower wise totally in different league....

How is it three

Scorpene - 1
P75/U214 - 2
Planned SSN-3
Arihant Subclasses each with different design parameters

Not to mention every other project that hops up

As it turns out, the news reported earlier was a little misleading. While the Spanish S-80 offering is not ruled out, it was "far behind" the TKMS offering, primarily due to a proven sea-going AIP.

Just PR hitjobs, The deal will go to the french. upgraded scorpenes will be ordered (i think about 6 of them). So we should have a fleet of about 12 Scorpenes total in about 10 years.

So IN evaluated German and Spanish subs and the manufacturers were not aware it was a hit job, but you are privy to this information.

Wow.

Wow.

We have a 75 billion defence budget. We evaluate everything everywhere, whether we intend to buy or not, just in case something suprising comes up. Even the Russians asked us to evaluate the Amur (I believe we evaluated them too). If the manufacturers don't want us to evaluate they are free to not pitch their goods. Doesn't mean we will buy their stuff.

But you are certain it is just for PR becuase your father the IN Navy Chief told you I guess?

add indigenous 6 SSK (P-76) to your list

Very interesting. The PN had evaluated the 214 and basically signed for it but German reluctance to stop nuclear integration stopped the deal. In the same way, the PN is being pitched the s800, which is a miniature version of the s1000 designed by italy and russia for India. If Fincantieri won the contract, the PN would likely procure a larger, western version of the S1000 via fincantieri, meaning both navies were operating platfforms meant for and evaluated by the other at one point.

My father in the navy and grandfather in navy don't have to go to IMF for monthly salary. They can evaluate any submarine they want and the germans can put whatever PR news they want.

I know, and my neighbours wife's best friend was in the Indian navy and told me they had developed a time machine

What deal are you talking about? The French with MDL are already approved for 3 more AIP equipped Scorpenes. They aren't even in the race for the P-75I.

Scorpene - 9 units replacing 10 Kilo class subs

U214 - 6 units replacing 4 u209 class subs

Thats basically 15 ssks replacing 16 ssks and the number of classes remaining the same.

Arihant class is basically divided into 2 sub classes

first 2 subs ie INS Arihant and INS Arighat weigh around 6000 tons and carry 12 K15 Ballistic missiles with 750-1900 km range

While the last 2 subs which are currently under construction ie INS Arhidaman and INS Ariharan will weigh around 8000 tons and will carry 8 K4 MIRV Ballistic missiles which has a 4000km range and can carry 4 warheads each.

Apart from this India plans to build 2 SSNs , mainly For Carrier escort duties,
their construction will begin after the delivery of INS AriHaran sometime in 2028. So I expect a delivery timeline beyond 2035

So thats 5 different classes of sub at best till atleast 2040.

Any new submarine program is unlikely to be announced before 2035 and by the time we get them in the 2040s , scorpenes will be on their way out
