AIRSPACE REVIEW – PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has been entrusted with modernizing the Indonesian Air Force’s fleet of C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft.

The first aircraft to undergo the upgrade, a C-130 with registration number A-1321, has already been received by PTDI. It is the first of nine C-130 units scheduled to undergo modernization at the company’s facilities.

The modernization of the C-130B variant will extend the aircraft’s service life by an additional 15 years, equivalent to 25,000 more flight hours. The upgrade program includes, among other components, replacement of the Center Wing Box (CWBR) and a comprehensive avionics upgrade (AUP). All work will be carried out directly by PTDI.

Previously, the Indonesian Air Force had modernized another Hercules aircraft, A-1315, at PT GMF AeroAsia. That aircraft completed its upgrade and was formally handed over by GMF to the Ministry of Defense, which subsequently delivered it to the Air Force.

GMF had also been entrusted with the maintenance of another C-130 aircraft, registration A-1317. (RNS)

At G20 Summit, PT Dahana and RDM Sign Agreement to Build Energetic Material Facility in Indonesia

Johannesburg (ANTARA)
– PT Dahana has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global defense industry giant Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) to establish an energetic material production facility in Indonesia.

The signing ceremony, witnessed by Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas A.M. Djiwandono and Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Anindya Novyan Bakrie, took place during the Indonesia–Africa CEO Forum 2025 at the Saxon Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa, on 21 November 2025.

A Milestone for Indonesia’s Defense Industry

PT Dahana’s President Director, Hary Irmawan, emphasized that the partnership marks an important milestone for Indonesia’s defense sector. He stated that the initiative directly addresses long-standing challenges to defense-industrial sovereignty, as Indonesia has been heavily dependent on foreign supply chains for energetic material raw components.

“High import dependence has weakened the competitiveness and autonomy of our defense systems. Through this collaboration with RDM, we are not merely building a factory—we are ensuring that sovereignty over strategic materials rests in the hands of our own nation,” Hary said.

Closing a Critical Gap in Defense Production

The MoU aims to provide a concrete solution to Indonesia’s lack of domestic energetic material production facilities. Energetic materials are essential components for manufacturing defense equipment for the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), and other agencies—especially as raw materials for Large Caliber Munitions (MKB) and various warheads. Without domestic production, Indonesia’s defense posture remains limited and exposed to supply vulnerabilities.

Dual-Use Capabilities: Defense and Economy

Beyond its military applications, the new facility will also serve dual-use functions. Besides strengthening national defense, domestically produced energetic materials will supply commercial explosives needed by Indonesia’s mining industry. This makes the project strategically significant, as it enhances national industrial capabilities while contributing to broader economic development.

Technology Transfer from South Africa

Under the cooperation scheme, RDM of South Africa will act as the technology provider and is committed to conducting a full transfer of technology to Indonesia.
The advanced production facility will be constructed at PT Dahana’s Energetic Material Center (EMC) in Subang, West Java—intended as the core hub for national self-sufficiency in explosive materials.

Hary noted that developing this facility reflects a commitment to sustainable defense-industrial growth. He stressed that mastering energetic material production technologies is essential to breaking Indonesia’s long-term reliance on imports.

“Our target is that with this factory, Indonesia will not only achieve self-sufficiency but also become competitive on the global defense industry stage. This is Dahana’s dedication to safeguarding the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia through tangible defense-industrial independence,” Hary asserted.

Part of Indonesia’s Participation in the 2025 G20

The historic MoU signing took place as part of the Indonesia–Africa CEO Forum 2025, an integral agenda of the G20 Leaders Summit 2025. The Indonesian delegation was led by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto.

PT Dahana’s delegation also included Wildan Widarman, Erwin Cipta Mulyana, Anggaria Maharani, and Jodi Widjanarko, who oversaw the strategic collaborations between Indonesian and South African business leaders.

Strengthening Dahana’s Role as ASEAN’s Explosive Industry Leader

PT Dahana currently operates Nitroglycerin and Ammonium Nitrate plants and is developing a Propellant plant. The new energetic material facility is expected to further solidify Dahana’s position as Indonesia’s leading explosive manufacturer, with the most comprehensive energetic material capabilities in the ASEAN region.

Indonesian Ministry of Defense and PT Noahtu Shipyard Hold Keel Laying Ceremony for OPV Vessel

BATAM, POSMETRO.CO – PT Noahtu Shipyard, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, held a Keel Laying Ceremony for the construction of one Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) H7117 on Wednesday (19/11).

The ceremony marks the beginning of the ship’s construction phase, based on Contract TRAK/385/PLN/V/2024 dated 6 May 2024, with completion scheduled for 2028.

The OPV is designed as a patrol vessel with full combat capabilities, intended to strengthen the operational elements of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL).

Its primary function is to conduct maritime operations under the framework of Military Operations for War (OMP).

PT Noahtu Shipyard Director, Adi Susanto, stated that the keel laying represents a historic moment for both the company and the domestic shipbuilding industry.

“This ceremony is not only a symbol of the start of physical construction but also a testament to our strong commitment to contributing to the development of naval defense equipment for the Indonesian Navy,” he said.

Adi expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Defense, the Indonesian Navy, and all parties supporting the ship's development. He hopes the project proceeds smoothly and is completed according to standards and schedule.

“We are ready to support the policy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, President Prabowo, in prioritizing domestic industrial development and realizing Indonesia’s maritime greatness,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense’s Expert Staff for Social Affairs, Maj. Gen. TNI Rionardo, representing the Minister of Defense, stated that the OPV’s keel laying is an important milestone in strengthening the independence of the national defense industry.

“The keel laying is not merely a technical ritual, but a symbol of the birth of new strength. We are not only laying the first piece of steel, but also the hopes and future of Indonesia’s naval power,” he said.

He added that the development of the OPV is strategically important for the posture of the Indonesian Navy amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

The vessel is designed to provide a strong deterrent effect while strengthening Indonesia’s presence across its vast archipelagic waters.

“This ship is designed with full combat capability and is expected to be operated soon to reinforce Indonesia’s maritime sovereignty,” he explained.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation between PT Noahtu Shipyard and the OPV Ship Development Task Force to ensure the vessel is completed with the right quality and on schedule.

“We appreciate all parties involved in ensuring the smooth execution of this keel laying ceremony,” Rio said. (hbb)

@Indos recently there was news of Indonesia testing an unmanned submarine called KSOT. Can you provide more details on this project or submarine ? Are there any plans for exporting this down the line?
I know PTPAL exported the tarlac class lpd to Philippines. This submarine in large numbers can provide deterrence for countries like Bdesh Pakistan Iran etc

Previous pages already explain about the project. There is no export plan at the moment as look like PT PAL has already been assured by Defense Minister about the plan to produce more than 30 of this submarine for Indonesian Navy.

But I guess the development is still in early phase and it is likely needing more years to be pretty decent and capable attack submarine

Is there any plans to build a larger version with lacm capability? Also how many torpedoes can it carry. I think for country like Indonesia atleast 50

Could be if this variant meets all the Navy needs, other variants may come.

It can carry two large torpedos ( from attached tube/ outside main body )

Yes it could be as many as 50 subs, but for the mean time Defense Minister plan to acquire this for 30 submarines. I think it needs military certification first before the real order can actually comes.

When these submarines are built and deployed, they should go to Pakistan for joint training exercises with the PN. I am sure both sides will learn alot from each other.

Krakatau Posco (majority owned by Krakatau Steel) provide steel for Merah Putih Frigate built by PT PAL Indonesia. Other local suppliers for the frigates is PT Barata, both suppliers are state owned companies under Danantara Superholding.

Krakatau Posco also supply steels for Spain military grade shipyard, Navantia
