AIRSPACE REVIEW – PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Dassault Aviation on February 28, 2025 inaugurated the Dassault Aviation-PTDI Design Office at the PTDI 4th Floor Technology Directorate Building in Bandung.

The inauguration was attended by the Director General of Defense Potential (Dirjen Pothan) of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense Major General Piek Budyakto, CEO of PT Dassault Aviation Indonesia Jerome Puech, Director of Commercial Technology & Development of PTDI Moh Arif Faisal, and Director of Production of PTDI Dena Hendriana.

The inauguration of the Design Office is part of the implementation of the Rafale fighter aircraft procurement and industrialization program in Indonesia following the contract for the procurement of 42 Rafale units by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense.

As part of the offset cooperation and technology transfer, Dassault Aviation supported PTDI in the development of Computer Based Training (CBT) for the Rafale system.

In addition, the program is also to improve the competence of project management, industrialization, and integration of weapon systems in accordance with Dassault Aviation standards.

The Design Office has two main areas. The first is a CBT facility that uses interactive diagrams and real-time 3D graphics to provide in-depth training on Rafale aircraft systems and improve technical understanding for crew and technicians.

The second is the Weapon Integration Laboratory, which is designed to improve PTDI's capabilities in the integration of weapon systems in fighter aircraft.

With this collaboration, PTDI will also acquire Electronic Warfare (EW) technology, which is one of the essential aspects in the development of the global defense industry.

The system allows Rafale fighters to detect, disrupt and neutralize electronic threats from adversaries, increasing survivability and effectiveness in modern combat.

With the acquisition of EW technology at PTDI, it is hoped that the national capability in the development and integration of electronic warfare technology will be more advanced, supporting the independence of the Indonesian defense industry in facing global challenges.

In addition to the offset obligations, PTDI will also be involved in the Engineering Work Package (EWP), which includes the construction of Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) facilities for the maintenance and repair of fighter aircraft in the country, as well as the Production Work Package (PWP) to explore the production of composite-based components.

In addition to contributing to the Rafale program, Dassault Aviation will also support PTDI in the process of obtaining European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for the N219 aircraft.

This certification is a strategic step for PTDI to expand the N219 market to the global level, especially in the European region and countries that refer to EASA standards. (RBS)

Surabaya, Jatim (ANTARA) - PT PAL Indonesia modernizes warships belonging to the Philippine Navy (AL) namely the Strategic Sealift Vessel (SSV) ship BRP Tarlac 601, which is leaning on the West Peninsula Pier, Surabaya, East Java.

"We are again trusted by the Philippine Navy in the program of modernizing its warship fleet," PAL Production Director Diana Rosa said in Surabaya on Thursday.

Diana said this move marks the imminent start of the docking of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) programs, as well as the first international warship MRO project in PAL history.

He explained that PAL won an open tender process for this MRO project and outperformed local municipalities from the Philippines, thus proving the company’s services are recognized regionally and globally.

As the largest warship operated by AL Philippines since 2016, BRP Tarlac 601 is the superior export product of Indonesian children.

In this MRO project, the main focus of work includes a propulsion system, underwater treatment (BGA), as well as valve systems, with a targeted workmanship time for four months.

Diana said this collaboration became a symbol of strengthening defense relations between Indonesia and the Philippines and the potential continuation of cooperation on other ships such as his sister ship, BRP Davao Del Sur 602.

“We believe this collaboration will continue to grow and strengthen Southeast Asia’s maritime solidarity. We hope the project goes smoothly and becomes a positive step towards broader and sustainable cooperation in the future," Diana said.

The ship commander of BRP Tarlac 601 Capt Fredie C Parpan expressed his gratitude for arriving in Surabaya safely after eight days of travel so as to signify the extraordinary expertise of the ship built by Indonesian hands.

Moreover, the ship is actually time to dry docking but still managed to sail very strongly and reliably because it was built well.

Fredie added that the collaboration between the Philippines and Indonesia also established a learning opportunity for the Philippine Navy crew at the BRP Tarlac 601 considering that personnel will be involved in the repair process.

“Our personnel will have the opportunity to observe and engage in the process of improvement, expand their technical knowledge and familiarize themselves with international shipyard standards and practices,” Fredie said.

On April 17, the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) commissioned its newest warship, KRI Bung Hatta (370), an 80-metre domestically-built corvette named in honor of Mohammad Hatta, the country’s first vice president and one of Indonesia’s founding fathers.

The commissioning ceremony was held at PT Karimun Anugrah Sejati’s shipyard in Batam, Riau Islands, where the vessel was first launched and named on February 27, 2025. According to TNI AL, the ship was constructed in 20 months and demonstrated the service’s commitment to procuring more domestically made products.

The corvette measures 80.3 meters in length, 12.6 meters in beam, and can reach a top speed of 25 knots. It can accommodate a crew of 82 personnel and has an endurance of five days at sea.

While it currently mounts an older Bofors 57mm naval gun, the Navy stated that it could be replaced later with a 76mm main gun to enhance the ship’s firepower.

Designed for multi-role operations, KRI Bung Hatta will also be equipped with surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and a torpedo launch system. In addition, the corvette will feature electronic warfare capabilities, including radar-electric countermeasures (R-ECM) and radar-electric support measures (R-ESM). However, TNI AL has not publicly provided a clear timeline for when all these systems will be fully installed.

Operational control of the vessel will fall under TNI AL’s 2nd Fleet Command based in Surabaya City, East Java. KRI Bung Hatta will also be deployed to patrol and secure the country’s key maritime choke points, TNI AL added.

Back in April 2023, the same shipyard launched a 73-metre corvette named after Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno (KRI Bung Karno-369). While both ships share a similar lineage, there are notable design distinctions beyond their dimensions.

KRI Bung Hatta features a shorter angled forward superstructure compared to its predecessor. It also has a visible gap along its superstructure (amidship)—an area typically reserved for surface-to-surface missile launchers, suggesting a greater emphasis on combat tasks.

One likely explanation for this design divergence is that, unlike KRI Bung Karno, KRI Bung Hatta was neither designed nor designated as a presidential or VVIP corvette, which would have otherwise required expanded internal spaces to accommodate high-level dignitaries and enhanced comfort features. This allowed for greater allocation of space to mission-critical systems, including weapons and sensors.
