I would say that the rare earth sanction would be the main reason for Trump to attack Iran for his bargaining chips against China.

Since their nuclear arsenal also requires the rare earth for maintenance and upgrade, and China's move is killing them.

The US was a very good long term strategic planner during the cold war, and the post-cold war made them a bad one with full of hubris.
