Iran is being unreasonable here. Iran blocked Strait of Hormuz itself for weeks and stopped the tankers of other Gulf nations leaving out of strait unless they paid the toll tax while Iranian tankers keep moving in/out of Strait without any restriction during the period.
Iran and US both are stubborn. The region will have serious consequences If Iran acquires nuclear weapons and/or start charging the toll tax which is against the international law as strait of Hromuz is not man's made.

There is no reason to restrict passage toll solely to manmade straights.

Also, the Canal of Suez was first created by the Achaemenids of Persia, and later was revived and expanded by the French and the Brits. Using your logic, Egypt should allow free passage there too, or give the toll money to Iran, UK and France.

Within 12 nautical miles perpendicular to a national coastline, nations can apply the limitation of "innocent passage" upon transiting vessels (NOT "freedom of navigation", which exists beyond that distance).

"Innocent passage" allows a nation to impart reasonable security measures upon transiting vessels, including boarding, blocking, and being recompensed for said security. Iran is actually within its maritime rights to exert conditions of transit withing 12 nautical miles perpendicular to its coastline.

Indeed, it is USA that has clearly and unequivocally engaged in piracy here.

How does this refute what I said? The Canal of Suez was not built by the Egyptians. It was first built by the Achaemenids of Persia, and later was revived and widened by the French and the British. So, if anything, the toll should go to Iran, the UK and France.
Why is Egypt taking the toll? They didn't build it. They had nothing to do with its existence.

You're incorrect. Iran is acting in its own security interests within its territorial waters, which is ENTIRELY permissible by international maritime law.

There are countless examples of this.

Even the 12 nautical miles is an arbitrary number stated in the UNCLOS, but Iran has never ratified the UNCLOS and hence, it is not bound to respect it. Hence, we can claim our territorial waters expand to 24 nautical miles. Why not?
