with these air defences we don't need MRBMs since they are much closer to Iran.

SRBMs and drones and cruise missiles can be used for these and Iran has these in much greater numbers than MRBMs (which itself Iran likely has in tens of thousands)
 
USA could not stop Ansarallah from firing missiles and drones at its ships virtually every day so I don't see much credibility in the idea they can stop Iran doing much more.

Yemen has only a few underground sites built under the old government and possibly upgraded with Iranian assistance, in a relatively small territory.

Iran has > 100 underground sites that are much deeper and better protected and spread across a huge, mountainous territory. and each one likely has 500-1000+ missiles.

it is simply not reality to think the US can stop Iranian missiles or prevent the destruction of every single US military base within 500km of Iranian borders.

US military officials have access to the best intelligence in the world and they are very capable. So they know this reality very well.

I think at this point, even the people who doubted Iran's missile forces know for a fact that we can attack and hurt the US military assets in the Middle East. That is no longer a question of possibility. But the real question now is, do the regime and military commanders in Iran have the cojones to do that?

They didn't show the willingness to kill American soldiers when we attacked Ain Al-Assad in retaliation for the assassination of our top commander. They even coordinated the attack with Iraqis/Americans before launching it. The same thing happened in TP1 and TP2. We also failed to respond to Israel's violation of our territory which killed 5 Iranian soldiers. So, the current question is all about how willingness to engage the US and Israel, particularly when one side is armed with nuclear weapons and we're not.

fair point but I think TP2 showed intent to cause real damage

you don't suddenly fire 180 ballistic missiles with no warning (it was detected by US a few hours in advance, but not much we can do about that) without acknowledging that the attack may cause serious damage and deaths, even if it is aimed at military targets

unfortunately the missiles did not perform as expected and showed weak accuracy, but IRI did not know that in advance

It's hard to know what they wanted to achieve by firing all those missiles at Israel. I agree with some members here that 180 ballistic missiles is probably a false number, and larger than the actual number.
They missed some obvious targets in Nevatim.
For example, satellite imagery "suggests" that they wanted to target F-35 shelters. But there aren't enough hits in that region to reach a decisive conclusion. Also, those hangars are reinforced concrete. So, what did they intend to achieve by that when they knew those fighters won't be there and the damage would appear to be minimal in satellite imagery?

Yet, they missed a very obvious and vulnerable target like the Control Tower which could've been a sensible choice, and a pretty nice target for propaganda in satellite imagery. Probably because the Control Tower was close to the shelter hosting the Wing of Zion, they considered that escalatory and decided not to target that proximity.

The problem with Iran's attacks is that when it's over, nothing makes sense. Look at the Israeli attack on Iran. Their choice of targets makes sense. But you can't claim the same thing about our military responses.

around 40% of the c. 40 missiles that impacted Nevatim were 'strays' and wildly off target. so it is hard to know what the target was.

3 missiles impacted near the F-35 shelters so clearly that was a target and they achieved at least 3 'accurate' (<50m CEP) hits there albeit this was still insufficiently accurate and insufficiently powerful to penetrate the concrete shelter

one theory is that a large number of missiles was also fired at Tel Aviv but these were intercepted, and Israel left Nevatim undefended to preserve interceptors for Tel Aviv. but we cannot know for sure.

the 180 number seems fairly accurate considering it has been corroborated by Israel and USA as well as IRGC generals too. a 30% failure rate (somewhat reasonable for MRBMs especially cheap Iranian ones) automatically removes 54/180. and we saw a total of c. 50-55 impacts from the remaining 126 missiles. so c. 60 interceptions seems plausible

but I agree it is very hard to tell what the targets were since so many missiles missed any plausible target by such large distances. OTOH, the direct hits that we did see cannot be a coincidence given the size of the air base.

But where are the boosters? 180 missiles (possibly over 250 missiles in both TP1 and TP2) and we haven't seen more than 10-15 boosters recovered after the attacks.
