China is “there” now and there is nothing to debate as far as their engine technology is concerned.
They even dumped Russia from C929 jet liner project and will build all systems themselves for service in 5-10 years from now.
Even the prototype J-35s now fly with domestic engines. Unless you are very confident in the technology you do not put a test engine in a prototype plane.
My opinion is that their last mile, if not last metre, will happen with the final integration of the WS-15 with the J-20. But it’s a matter of time, maybe less than a year.
The ultimate test is performance is of course under battlefield conditions.
