By REUTERSOCTOBER 6, 2024 23:41Israel is obstructing search and rescue efforts in an area where senior Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine is thought to have been when Israel bombed Beirut's southern suburbs on Thursday, a Hezbollah official said.
Safieddine is seen as a likely successor to former leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah who was killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh, on September 27.
His fate remains unclear.
Iran's Quds Force official also missing
The senior Hezbollah political official, Mahmolud Qmati, also said he had no information on reports that the leader of Iran's elite Quds Force Esmail Qaani has not been heard from since the strikes on Beirut late last week.Israel should "let rescue teams do their work," he told Iraqi state television.
Qmati said that Hezbollah was now being jointly led until it could pick a new leader, which would take time.
"What's important is that joint command is in place," he said.
"The method of choosing a replacement for the secretary-general takes time and requires appropriate circumstances, and for that reason we suffice today with temporary joint command," he said.
Qmati said Nasrallah's body remained in Lebanon and that he would be laid to rest in Beirut's southern suburbs, where Hezbollah holds heavy influence, when conditions allowed.
Israel has killed much of Hezbollah's military command and senior leadership in nearly a year of fighting that began when Hezbollah opened a front in solidarity with Palestinians the day after Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel.
The conflict has rapidly expanded in the past couple of weeks, with Israel snubbing a US-backed push for a ceasefire, killing Nasrallah and launching a wide air campaign that has pummeled Lebanese towns and villages and left 1.2 million people displaced, according to Lebanese government figures.

By JERUSALEM POST STAFFOCTOBER 6, 2024 10:38Updated: OCTOBER 6, 2024 21:31Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Brigadier-General Esmail Qaani's whereabouts are not currently known, according to a New York Times report, citing Iranian media.
According to the Israeli N12 on Saturday, the Iranian brigadier-general may have been wounded in the Israeli strike that targeted Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah's presumed successor, Hashem Safieddine, in southern Beirut.
The NYT report cited local media as saying that officials in Iran had no clear answers yet regarding what may have occurred to the Quds Force chief.
Two days after Israel eliminated Nasrallah, Qaani was seen in Hezbollah's Tehran offices. However, he was not present at the Friday commemoration of Hezbollah's chief led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

However, according to the NYT report, citing three Iranian sources, Qaani had traveled to Beirut to convene with Hezbollah officials amid the Israeli strikes on the terror organization.An IRGC member said, according to the NYT report, that Iranian officials' muteness on the subject was spreading panic among the IRGC members.
Later on Sunday, Army Radio reported, citing local Iranian reports, that Qaani would conduct an interview later in the day.
Two Iranian security officials confirmed to Rueters on Sunday that Qaani hasn't been heard from since last week.
One of the officials said Qaani was in Beirut's southern suburbs, known as the Dahiyeh, during a strike on Thursday that was reported to have targeted senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine but the official said he was not meeting Safieddine.
The official said Iran and Hezbollah had not been able to contact Qaani since then.
The second official also said Qaani had traveled to Lebanon after the killing of Nasrallah and the Iranian authorities had not been able to contact him since the strike against Safieddine, who was widely expected to be the next Hezbollah chief.
Hezbollah has made no comment so far on Safieddine.
The Quds Force, the overseas arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, oversees dealings with terrorist militias allied with Tehran across the Middle East, such as Hezbollah.

Speaking exclusively to The Jerusalem Post, the diplomat clarified that all mediation efforts are conducted exclusively through representatives from Hamas's political office in Doha.
"Khalil Al-Hayah has been leading negotiations on behalf of Hamas since day one," the diplomat stated, emphasizing that Sinwar has never been involved in direct talks.
Khalil al-Hayah is a senior Hamas political figure. He has been heavily involved in the terrorist organization's diplomatic efforts, often representing it in ceasefire talks and other negotiations. According to the Qatari diplomat, Al-Hayah has led the discussions with external mediators throughout the current hostage crisis.
Haniyeh's role
"Haniyeh was involved in previous negotiations, but it was always Al-Hayah who managed the technical side of things," the diplomat said regarding Hamas's former political bureau chief.Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas leader, had a significant influence on the group before his assasination during a visit to Tehran in July 2024. Although Haniyeh once held a prominent position, his role in negotiations that occurred before his death had been largely limited.
The Qatari diplomat stressed that no member of Qatar's mediation team had made such a statement to the hostages' families. "None of the Qatari mediation team members have had a meeting with the hostages' family members, neither this week nor last week," the official said, addressing the N12 report that suggested Sinwar had ceased communications and was hiding among hostages.

NO, in case I didn't make it clear, this is the final post in the conversation.
Here, fundamental distinctions are the issue. We do not call such groups freedom fighters or engage in jihad when they murder innocent people, nor do we support them in any nation. It doesn't matter if the problem has existed for decades.
One such example is that we and our mainstream media label anyone who kills an innocent Pakistani and is attacked by armed individuals as a "terrorist." Give me an instance when the media refers to them as freedom fighters or as carrying out JIhad (it doesn't matter if they are Baloch; the dispute between Baloch and Pakistan dates back more than 70 years;
as we are dealing with the same problems if terrorists kill innocent Indians. Some have dubbed these terrorists "Freedom Fighters" and said they are waging jihad, but we don't refer to anyone from any country who kill innocent people as freedom fighters.
