Saudi Arabia to invest more than $20 billion in its military industry over next decade​

DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia will invest more than $20 billion in its domestic military industry over the next decade as part of aggressive plans to boost local military spending, the head of the kingdom’s military industry regulator said on Saturday.

The Gulf state wants to develop and manufacture more weapons and military systems domestically, aiming to spend 50% of the military budget locally by 2030.

“The government has put a plan that we will be investing in excess of $10 billion in the military industry in Saudi Arabia over the next decade and equal amounts on research and development,” Governor of the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al-Ohali told a defence conference in Abu Dhabi.

He also said the kingdom plans to increase military research and development (R&D) spending from 0.2% to around 4% of armaments expenditure by 2030.

Saudi Arabia seeks to purchase Russian superior ballistic missile technologies



Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman seeks to purchase Russian breakthrough ballistic missile technologies to strengthen his country’s military arsenal and protect its regional interests, according to the “Tactical Report” website, which specializes in security and defense.

On December 6, 2023, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Riyadh to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to the website, during the meeting, Bin Salman expressed his interest in purchasing Russian ballistic missile technologies.

Russian ballistic missiles are among the latest weapons technologies in the world. They are capable of flying at speeds exceeding the speed of sound, which makes them difficult to intercept. They are also equipped with nuclear or non-nuclear warheads.



The Saudi Crown Prince seeks to strengthen his country's military arsenal by purchasing Russian ballistic missile technologies, with the aim of defending the Kingdom against any external threat and strengthening its regional position as a leading military power.

According to sources, President Putin expressed his willingness to sell Russian ballistic missile technologies to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and also suggested that cooperation between the two countries take place in developing these technologies.

Bin Salman’s pursuit of Russian ballistic missile technology represents an important step in Saudi Arabia’s militarization path. This step reflects Saudi concern about regional threats, and it also indicates that the Kingdom seeks to play a more active role in international politics.

Saudi Arabia and France sign a plan for cooperation in military industries

Today, Wednesday, Saudi Arabia announced the signing of a plan with France in the fields of military manufacturing, research and development.

Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi Minister of Defence, said on his official account on the X platform.
He explained that he reviewed with the Minister of the French Armed Forces, Sebastien Lecornu, “the strategic relations between our two countries, our military and defense cooperation, and our common vision for the security and stability of the region.”



He pointed out that the discussions also covered regional and international developments and topics of common interest.

K239 Chunmoo MLRS is capable of firing different caliber missiles and rockets.

The K239 Chunmoo long range rocket artillery system is very advanced, versatile and lethal. Just like American M270 and HIMARS, the K239 possessed the capabilities of fire many special rockets and missiles. To explain the missile missing in the previous explanation, K-BATS is a high performance target missile used in the interception tests and it's mostly use in fixed canister. The heavily modified KTSSM, which is capability to carrying several loitering suicide drone is under development. Romania also seriously considering to acquire the K239 Chunmoo along with the various Korean weapons. South Korea massively operate K239 and exported to UAE, Poland and Saudi Arabia.



The KTSSM is a ballistic-guided weapon system with a range exceeding 120 kilometers. Notably, the KTSSM’s powerful warhead enables it to penetrate underground targets effectively, providing South Korea’s military with a formidable capacity to neutralize hardened artillery sites equipped with numerous long-range guns.
The KTSSM-I variant is designed to be integrated into the domestic Chunmoo multiple-launch rocket system. This development aligns with South Korea’s strategic focus on strengthening its precision strike capabilities, specifically targeting North Korean artillery concealed in underground caves.



One notable feature of the KTSSM-I is its ability to penetrate the ground by several meters, enabling it to reach and neutralize hidden subterranean targets.
