In an important step to enhance its indigenous defense capabilities, Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) unveiled its groundbreaking 8x8 155mm self-propelled howitzer at the World Defense Expo 2024. This strategic launch puts SAMI in direct competition with European defense giants, challenging... The dominance of the French and German RCH 155-caliber Caesar guns with their advanced artillery solution.

1707530915869.jpeg

While the name of the new self-propelled howitzer remains under wraps, SAMI representatives have revealed that the vehicle is currently undergoing rigorous trials with the Saudi Armed Forces. This initiative is a collaborative effort between SAMI and the Saudi Army, highlighting the nation's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities through... Local innovation.

The Saudi Army and National Guard, both integral components of the Saudi Armed Forces, operate the French-made Caesar Cannons, a 155 mm 6×6 self-propelled howitzer developed by the French company Nexter, now part of the KNDS. The models serving Saudi forces are mounted on two different chassis: a 6x6 Sherpa truck for the Army and a Unimog chassis for the National Guard.

Sami's latest project, the 155mm 8x8 howitzer, represents a major leap forward for the Saudi defense industry, aiming to rival European-made wheeled howitzers with a product entirely designed and developed in-house, based on the Czech TATRA 8x8 truck chassis.

The new howitzer features an armored crew cabin at the front and a 155 mm gun at the rear. It is equipped with a semi-automatic loading system and storage for charge and shells. Although specific details regarding ammunition capacity remain unannounced, the self-propelled gun promises to be a formidable addition to the arsenal. Saudi Arabia.

The howitzer includes an advanced computerized fire control system, allowing precise targeting and firing operations inside and outside the crew cabin. It is worth noting that the gun is armed with a variety of ammunition, including standard 155 mm rounds and GPS-guided shells. , and a domestically produced version of the US M982 Excalibur munition—a precision-guided munition designed for close support scenarios and minimizing collateral damage in close-quarters civilian engagements.

Sami's presentation at the World Defense Exhibition 2024 not only showcased the new self-propelled howitzer, but also demonstrated the breadth of the Saudi defense industry's capabilities in developing and manufacturing advanced combat vehicles. This development represents a pivotal moment in Saudi Arabia's quest for self-reliance in defense manufacturing, signaling a new era. From competition in the global arms market.

WDS 2024: AVIC WL-10B (HALE) to be delivered to Royal Saudi Air Force

1707540157166.jpeg

China Defence, on behalf of China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC), has confirmed that the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) Wing Loong-10B, an export variant of the CATIC Wing Loong-10 (also dubbed as WL-10), will soon enter service with the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF).

With the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) displayed at the World Defense Show (WDS) 2024 held in Riyadh from 4 to 8 February, the company official told Janes that the payloads will be different for the export variant compared with the baseline variant. The company official also revealed that the base variant WL-10 UAV and the lower endurance variant WL-10A are in service with China's People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

Alongside the WL-10B, CATIC displayed a range of weapons that can be fitted onto the UAV. These include the TY-90 air-to-air missile, AG-300/M air-to-ground missile, FT-7A/W laser-guided bomb, YJ-9E anti-ship missile, TL-20 guided bomb, and LS-6/100NLS miniature-guided bomb.

1707540253204.jpeg

The high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) WL-10 features a relatively low-wing cranked planform with slender fuselage that incorporates a bulged nose section (incorporating a dorsal antenna hump), a tricycle undercarriage, a V-shaped tail assembly incorporating ruddervators, and a rear-mounted turbojet engine.

The WL-10B has a large trapezoidal dorsal engine intake and a concealed exhaust at the rear of the fuselage, suggesting a single engine. The UAV is fitted with a communication antenna and ultra/very-high-frequency (U/VHF) datalinks. An additional electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) sensor will be fitted ventrally ahead of the communication antenna.

The Kingdom wants huge maritime deals, but on the condition that 50% of the value of each contract is spent locally
18 March 2022

“Difficult negotiations” European companies suffer from selling their products to Saudi Arabia..The Kingdom requires that 50% of the deal value be spent locally to transfer knowledge and technology..

Naval Group displayed the latest Belharra frigates for the Saudi Navy

1707545659549.jpeg

And GOWIND 2500

1707546083498.jpeg

While the Italian 🇮🇹 Fincantieri proposed an advanced version of the FREMM frigates.

1707545779048.jpeg

The Saudi Navy is heading for complete modernization
Expanding its capabilities after ordering four Lockheed Martin MMSC ships
and five Navantia Avante -2200 corvettes,

The Navy still needs 4-6 more frigates or 5-8 large corvettes.
Therefore, major shipbuilders offered their most advanced solutions, side by side
With partnership proposals for local industry. In fact, under the concept of Vision 2030
The Kingdom's new offset policies stipulate that 50% must be spent of the value of each contract locally,

And in an attempt to bring knowledge to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and develop the national industry, It is no coincidence that the Saudi Aramco, SAMI and Scopa groups announced multiple cooperation agreements that will bring the best defense technologies
to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Hyundai seeks to benefit from its agreements with Aramco to propose its own products such as FFX-I/II/III frigates..

1707546164283.png

And the HDF-3500 and HDF-3800SA

1707546289061.jpeg

Other proposals included DSME's DW-3000H

1707546390705.jpeg

And many offers of frigates from the Chinese CSSC.

1707546497919.jpeg

When speaking to a variety of stakeholders, it's obvious that Saudi Arabia is viewed as one of the most important markets for Promising projects in the region, whether directly or indirectly.

In reality, Saudi political influence in the Middle East may serve as a catalyst for the launch
to a wider market across the region for those companies able to seize opportunities to sell to Riyadh..
