Saudi Arabia shows interest in South Korea's plans to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft

The South Korean Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has shown great interest in Korea's plans to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft.
According to the Korean Yonhap Agency, Defense Minister Shin Won-sik revealed to reporters the results of his Middle Eastern tour that led him to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, saying that he explained to the Saudi side South Korea’s plans to develop sixth-generation fighters.
A senior official at the ministry, who accompanied Minister Shin during his Middle Eastern tour, said that Saudi Arabia is paying attention to developing sixth-generation killers. He asked the Saudi side about South Korea’s plans, and the Korean side explained these plans.
The official said that the Korean side presented its plans to develop sixth-generation fighters based on the KF-21 fighter, and the Saudi side expressed great interest in the plans.
He added that Saudi Arabia also expressed interest in the Korean aircraft engine offered by Hanhwa Aerospace.
Minister Chen said that Saudi Arabia has a ten-year budget for the defense industry, and the two sides discussed many constructive ways for defense cooperation.
He pointed to the possibility of expanding South Korea's arms exports to Saudi Arabia, saying that South Korea and Saudi Arabia had reached an agreement in principle to cooperate in the field of defense over the next ten years.
Regarding the announcement of the contract to export the South Korean ballistic missile interceptor system “CheongongⅡ” to Saudi Arabia, Shin said that this is the first time that a large-scale contract to export weapons to the Middle East region has been announced, describing it as something very meaningful.
