Saudi Arabia shows interest in South Korea's plans to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft

The South Korean Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has shown great interest in Korea's plans to develop sixth-generation fighter aircraft.

According to the Korean Yonhap Agency, Defense Minister Shin Won-sik revealed to reporters the results of his Middle Eastern tour that led him to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, saying that he explained to the Saudi side South Korea’s plans to develop sixth-generation fighters.

A senior official at the ministry, who accompanied Minister Shin during his Middle Eastern tour, said that Saudi Arabia is paying attention to developing sixth-generation killers. He asked the Saudi side about South Korea’s plans, and the Korean side explained these plans.

The official said that the Korean side presented its plans to develop sixth-generation fighters based on the KF-21 fighter, and the Saudi side expressed great interest in the plans.

He added that Saudi Arabia also expressed interest in the Korean aircraft engine offered by Hanhwa Aerospace.

Minister Chen said that Saudi Arabia has a ten-year budget for the defense industry, and the two sides discussed many constructive ways for defense cooperation.

He pointed to the possibility of expanding South Korea's arms exports to Saudi Arabia, saying that South Korea and Saudi Arabia had reached an agreement in principle to cooperate in the field of defense over the next ten years.

Regarding the announcement of the contract to export the South Korean ballistic missile interceptor system “CheongongⅡ” to Saudi Arabia, Shin said that this is the first time that a large-scale contract to export weapons to the Middle East region has been announced, describing it as something very meaningful.

Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems announced that they have entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Ministry of National Guard to explore industrial opportunities in ground systems. Hanwha is working to strengthen and grow its partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support the Kingdom’s goal of localizing the defense sector.

The MoU, which was signed during the “World Defense Expo 2024” held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, represents a milestone in Hanwha’s strategic alignment with Saudi Arabia to respond to increasing security requirements and boost local defense industries in the Middle East.

With the aim of supporting the current increasing future demand due to regional security needs in the Middle East, Hanwha and the Saudi Ministry of National Guard signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the partnership to advance the medium and long-term acquisition goals of the Ministry of National Guard in a variety of specialties. The scope of the potential partnership includes the production of armored vehicles in addition to advanced surveillance and reconnaissance systems, leveraging robotics and satellite technologies.

“We are excited to begin exploring opportunities with the Ministry of National Guard,” said a Hanwha official. By supporting the military sector, we hope to develop our strategic cooperative relationship in the medium to long term and contribute to the industrialization and security of Saudi Arabia.

Today I was pleased to meet with Mr. Haluk Bayraktar, CEO of Baykar Defense and Aviation Company, member of the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council, Chairman of the Turkish Technology Team and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Defense, Space and Aviation Association Cluster.

During the meeting, ways of cooperation between SCOPA and Baykar in industries related to drones were discussed. The transfer and localization of military industries and mechanisms for maximizing the added value of private sector companies were also discussed in order to achieve the industrial goals of both our countries in light of our wise leadership and to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, in partnership with the Bloc. The Turkish Defense, Space and Aviation Association, which includes more than 1,200 Turkish defense companies.

A lightweight, jam-resistant, multi-mode, multi-channel X-band SAR detector for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) over water and land, it combines mechanical antenna scanning with electronic radar beam scanning to provide real-time wide-area surveillance with a range of capabilities from Long-range searching and even exceptional detection of small targets. The detector can detect, track and georeference moving targets ranging from fast-moving vehicles to individuals on foot. The system has Moving Target Identification (DMTI) technology thanks to adaptive processing (STAP) enabled by multi-channel technology.
