It was a Serum Institute vaccine.

AstraZenca is a swedish pharma company. SII shares the same underlying "active ingredient" but it is a different product. Its like paracetamol (aka acetaminophen ) is sold under brand name Tylenol in north america but say Pacimol and Paracip in India. Same stuff different maker. Sometimes different non-active ingredients.

So Doc is right, India never used AstraZenca. It used SII Covishield vaccine. Both have same "active ingredient" alright, but they are not the same product. They will also not be similarly priced or produced under same manufacturing practices.

You know why? Because the BJP has a bad reputation for brutalising people. A reputation that gets worse with every bulldozer charge.

Just to set the record straight on this. The people in west who usually have been giving this reputation to BJP, their ancestors stole an entire continent and murdered the people living there. Even till this date the very same people have time and again denied even basic rights to vote to the said people.

There is a very famous and very recent "Consent does not mean veto" statement that has been thrown around by the very folks who point finger at and judge the reputation of BJP. Yet somehow, we take it as A-okay.

I guess fundamentally issue is, some of us really hate BJP even in the face of much bigger demons.

This vaccine is not generic. Just because Oxford University and AstraZeneca agreed to share the production rights with SII does not make it an SII vaccine. Just like SU30 MKI being produced in India does not make it an Indian aircraft. I hope this is clear.

SII indeed had license, but the license does not dictate branding, manufacturing process and compliance requirements. License was for vector virus carrying covid spike DNA. Growing it, purifying it and formulating a deliverable solution was SII's own responsibility.

Do you mean to say that SII produced vaccine on its own without following the SOP from AstraZeneca and marketed the final product without large scale trial? That's not true. Given Indian pharma tendency, SII may have "cut some corners", but there was simply no time or need to reinvent the wheel.

At the best you can say that covishield is a licensed biosimilar product.

This is similar to the difference between innovation and serial production.

SOPs are not really like programs but more like guidelines and directions. A company can still choose different cells to grow the viruses for instance.

AZ grows viruses in a cell culture derived from human cell line created more than 50 years ago..

SII grows it in a cell culture of HEK 293, which was first created in 1973.

So ... clearly, they are not referring to HEK 293. I do not know which cell culture they used to grow the viruses but it is different from one used in SII.

So there is your first difference in manufacturing.
