Only in 64 Russia started to build more missiles. Then the legend of Mig-31BM. It was supposed to be a super plane. When US got a one speciman, it turned out to be ... rather .... unimpressive.

The UK expands military use of Starshield after investing nearly $40 million in SpaceX satellite services.

The United Kingdom is strengthening SpaceX’s role within its military communications after allocating nearly $40 million to satellite services from Elon Musk’s company. The deployment includes approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals and another 500 Starlink units.

According to information provided by the British Ministry of Defence to Reuters, approximately 13 million pounds, equivalent to $17.6 million, were allocated to Starshield for terminals and airtime. Another 16.5 million pounds were spent on Starlink.

Furthermore, this adoption makes the UK the first country outside the United States to publicly acknowledge the use of Starshield, a platform that SpaceX directs specifically to government, military, and national security clients.

SpaceX Spending Drives Military Use of Starshield​

Since mid-2022, the Ministry of Defence has been using Starlink. However, it subsequently began transferring part of operational military communications traffic to Starshield.

The shift responds to the separation that SpaceX has established between both services. Starlink is oriented primarily toward the civilian and commercial market, while Starshield is designed for government and military needs.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the military platform offers enhanced encryption, higher network priority, specific conditions for military operations, more flexible licenses, and expanded coverage.

Likewise, Starshield leverages in the UK the satellite constellation, ground stations, and part of the infrastructure used by Starlink. The difference lies in the use of dedicated terminals and independent ground gateways.

UK Has Around 1,000 Starshield Terminals​

The expansion began progressively. In 2024, the UK started using Starshield airtime through Starlink terminals that were already available. It subsequently acquired its first equipment dedicated to the military platform.

Currently, the Ministry of Defence has approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals compared to around 500 Starlink terminals.

This deployment positions SpaceX’s satellite services as a significant component within British military communications infrastructure. At the same time, it raises questions about European dependence on U.S. providers for strategic defense capabilities.

The situation gains importance as various European governments seek to strengthen their own military capabilities and reduce vulnerabilities related to foreign technological infrastructure.

Starshield Has a Higher Cost Than Starlink Service​

The shift toward Starshield also implies a considerable increase in connectivity costs. In the UK, one of the available plans costs 5,500 pounds monthly and includes five terabytes of data. The unlimited option reaches 25,000 pounds per month.

In contrast, Starlink business customers can contract a service of two terabytes of global data for approximately 1,830 pounds monthly, in addition to having more economical alternatives.

The equipment itself shows differences. Starshield terminals cost between 4,000 and 7,000 pounds each, at least double the advertised price for certain Starlink business terminals.

The higher price is linked to the features and conditions that SpaceX offers for military operations, including network priority and specific security services.

SpaceX Increasingly Separates Starlink from Starshield​

Elon Musk has maintained that Starlink should remain oriented primarily toward civilian uses while Starshield serves government and military missions.

This distinction gained greater importance after various armed forces began incorporating Starlink connectivity. Ukraine, for example, widely extended its use after the Russian invasion of 2022 for battlefield communications and drone-related operations.

In the British case, the Ministry of Defence explained that it adopted Starshield after SpaceX established that Starlink should be limited to activities related to welfare, recreation, training, and other non-operational uses.

Therefore, Starshield is becoming the alternative that SpaceX offers to militaries when they need to use its satellite infrastructure in military operations.

UK Also Has Skynet and Participates in Eutelsat​

Despite SpaceX’s growth within its military communications, the UK maintains its own satellite capabilities.

The country operates Skynet, its military satellite communications network, and also holds a stake in the French company Eutelsat. The latter controls another of the main operational broadband constellations in low Earth orbit.

On the other hand, Starshield’s international presence could continue to increase. New Zealand is testing the service to evaluate its utility in military operations.

SpaceX also maintains a considerable relationship with the U.S. government. The company reported that it received multi-year Starshield contracts valued at more than $6 billion, primarily through U.S. Space Force programs linked to LEO constellations.

In this way, the British expansion reflects how SpaceX is transferring the scale achieved with Starlink toward the defense market through Starshield, while the UK combines that commercial capability with its own military satellite infrastructure.

If that happens, it may kill StarLink.
