"He might not be able to clear the Staff College Test, but to go Afghanistan; catch the President Najeeb will be a piece of cake for him". Stating the above, Time Magazine declared him as the number one free fall diver of the world.

His journey of valor started when he was commissioned in PMA after his graduation from Gordon's College Rawalpindi. He was considered as the best cricketer of the college. Pakistani Star Cricketer Fazal Mehmood (also known as The Hero of the Oval) predicted him to be the best future cricketer of Pakistan. But fate decided something else for him. PMA was waiting for him. There he proved his mettle in every walk of soldiery.

It was 1965, he was preparing for a specialized course with Delta Force in USA. The Operation Gibraltar was announced. Refusing to join the course, he joined the operation. He was lost in Kashmir during the operation and was announced as "Missing believed Killed", but one day he approached a nearby post of Kashmir sector and soon identified by the authorities.

He was soon recognized as the symbolic and mythical character of the SSG. In an early age, he was appointed as in-charge of Para Training School. Major Shabbir Shareef Nishan e Haider also got the PTW under his strict command. In the chaotic era of 1971, he was a potential threat to the Mukti Bahni and Indian Army. After the surrender, every Indian Army official was in search of this legend, but he was already in West Pakistan and no one was able to capture him.

When a plane of Air India was hijacked and brought to Pakistan, it was him and his two comrades who managed to arrest the hijackers and free the hostages without firing even a single bullet.

On an unfortunate morning of May 29, 1989, he jumped for a free fall. He opened his main parachute but the para chords were tangled. He opened his reserve parachute but it also failed to open. When a paratrooper lands, he adopts a certain posture i.e. bit leaned left, facing the ground. As his chutes failed to open, his martyrdom was certain, but that stone nerved person was still adopting the same posture. His velocity increased his weight up to tons, he fell and embraced martyrdom at the spot.

It was his performance which led him to the higher brass. He used to wear a black overall like all the paratroopers do, but he decorated his outfit by writing یااللہ (Oh Allah) on it.

The name of this legend is Brigadier Tariq Mehmood also known as TM Tiger. He was such a legendary and mythical character that still GOCs of SSG follow the example that he set.

On the parade of March 23, 2015 Maj Gen Abid Rafique whereas from March 23,2016 till 2019, ex GOC SSG Maj Gen Tahir Masood Bhutta dived in the outfit decorated with the words of Ya Allah.

Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali: a thorough professional with an impeccable personality

XII Corps Commander Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali of the Pakistan Army, who embraced martyrdom in a helicopter crash during a flood relief mission in Balochistan on Monday, was known as a thorough professional with an impeccable personality.

The commander of the Southern Command embraced martyrdom with five officers and soldiers aboard while flying over the Lasbela District in Balochistan during the flood relief mission.

The armed forces are currently assisting the civil administration in rescue and relief efforts in the areas hit by floods in Pakistan's largest province.

The top commander, who hailed from Lahore, kept his personal life under the wraps despite the fact that he served on some of the most sought-after positions in the army.
A graduate of the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul, Lt Gen Sarfraz was commissioned in the Azad Kashmir Regiment of the Pakistan Army in 1989.

Lt Gen Sarfraz led the 111th Infantry Brigade, also known as the Triple-1 Brigade, in 2012.

He served as director general of the Military Intelligence from 2018 to 2019. Before his posting in the southwestern region, the decorated officer served as the Inspector General of the Frontier Corps, South Balochistan in 2020.

In late 2020, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and posted the Quetta Corps Commander the next month.

Lt Gen Sarfraz was among the generals who were interviewed by former prime minister Imran Khan last year for the coveted post of Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan to replace Lt Gen Faiz Hameed.

He was named for the Southern Command post, which is a crucial one as it handles counter-insurgency in the remote area and protects the border with wartorn Afghanistan. He was conferred top military awards twice for his role in the war on terror.

Lt Gen Sarfaraz is survived by a widow, a daughter and two sons. He was reportedly the first person of the Sindhi ethnicity to be elevated to this rank in the Pakistan Army.

Other members onboard the ill-fated aircraft were Pakistan Coast Guard Director General Brigadier Amjad Hanif Satti, Brigadier Muhammad Khalid, Major Saeed Ahmed (pilot), Major M. Talha Manan (co-pilot) and Naik Mudassir Fayyaz (helicopter crew).

Sarfraz was born in Sargodha, Punjab, West Pakistan on 1 December 1968 to his father Chaudhary Dewan Ali, who served in the Pakistan Air Force as a Squadron leader at PAF Base Mushaf and as instructor at PAF College Sargodha. He has four siblings, two brothers and two sisters.

At the age of 20, he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in the 6 Azad Kashmir Regiment after completing the 79th Pakistan Military Academy course in March 1989.

He was known for leading from the front and as a result received his first Tamgha-e-Basalat in 2005. He received the second in 2008 for his gallantry in the war against terrorism.

He had an illustrious military career, including commanding Pakistani units during the Operation Rah-e-Rast and Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

From 2012 to 2014, he commanded the 111th Infantry Brigade. He later served as Pakistan's defence attaché to Washington, D.C. from 2014 to 2018.

In January 2018, he was appointed as Commandant of Pakistan Command and Staff College. On 25 October 2018, he was appointed DG Military Intelligence.

He was appointed Commander of the XII Corps in December 2020, where he served until his death in August 2022.
