Pakistan Major Dams News and Discussions

The question is, 5 dams in how many years and with wht capacity?

If we need to replenish the underground water level along with flood prevention, then we need chiniot dam. Similarly the dams in southern punjab like murunj dam.. sora dam.. domeli dam and akhori dams in attack region are much more important from water storage, flood prevention and for agriculture.
For some odd reason these dams are always neglected over the bigger, more expensive abd power producing dams.

• PM Shehbaz warns facilitators of cross-border violence will not be spared; pays homage to martyred officers
• Federal cabinet ratifies Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Thursday approved the formation of a special force for the protection of major dams in the country, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the nation’s resolve to eradicate terrorism and said that the government and armed forces would take all measures to crush violence emanating from across the border.

“The meeting granted in-principle approval for legislation to establish a special security force for the protection of major dams and hydropower projects under Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), said an official press release issued by the PM Office after the cabinet meeting, which was presided over by the prime minister.

The cabinet ratified recently inked the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The meeting also paid tribute to the leaderships of both the countries.

The cabinet further approved the donation of 15 non-operational aircraft of the Department of Plant Protection to various institutions for educational, commemorative, and exhibition purposes. The remaining four operational aircraft will continue to be used by the department for anti-locust operations.

It was noted that previous attempts to auction these aircraft had been unsuccessful, leading to the decision to donate them instead.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted recent incidents in which army officers and soldiers embraced martyrdom while conducting operations against terrorists.

PM Shehbaz remarked that facilitators were providing shelter to terrorists coming from across the border, and warned that such elements would no longer be spared. “The situation had reached a critical point. The martyrs have drawn a line with their blood while defending their country, and this line cannot be crossed,” he said.

“The sacrifices of the martyrs will be remembered forever,” he asserted, adding that the country’s achievements on the economic and diplomatic fronts would mean nothing if terrorism was not eliminated.

The Mangla Dam reservoir has reached its full water conservation level of 1,242 feet, according to sources from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), reported ARY News on Thursday.

WAPDA stated that the current water volume in the Mangla reservoir stands at 7.277 million acre-feet (MAF). Meanwhile, the Tarbela and Chashma reservoirs had already reached their maximum capacities earlier this year, with Tarbela attaining its full level of 1,550 feet in August.

ISLAMABAD: Amid rising fears of cost overruns and a looming financing crunch, the government has sought the 10th restructuring of the World Bank-funded Tarbela Fourth Extension Hydropower Project, requesting reallocation of funds from other expenditure categories to civil works to keep construction running for at least the next eight months.

Official documents revealed that the restructuring for reallocation of funds in IBRD loan is in response to the request received from Ministry of Economic Affairs on behalf of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

Pakistan’s storage capacity is catastrophically low. According to Arab news, Experts note Pakistan has only 30 days of water storage, compared to India’s 124 days. This is the core reason Pakistan floods when India releases water, there is nowhere to store or buffer the surge.
Pakistan needs multiple tiers of dams.
Based on hydrological studies, expert commentary, and comparisons with countries of similar river systems, the strategic need looks like 7 more large dams, 30 medium size dams and 300 small dams.

Indian dam releases have repeatedly caused sudden surges in Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab, inundating Punjab towns.

Pakistan’s vulnerability is structural because:

• No buffer reservoirs
• No flood canals
• No upstream storage on Sutlej/Ravi
• Silted existing dams
• Only 30-day storage capacity

Pakistan’s crisis is not a mystery. It is not bad luck. It is not foreign conspiracies. It is the mathematical result of a state that has spent decades perfecting the art of self sabotage.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has completed three hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 63 megawatts using its own resources, a move expected to generate Rs4.4 billion in annual revenue for the province, Express News reported.

The projects were completed during the current year and include the 40.8MW Koto hydropower project in Lower Dir, the 11.8MW Karora project in Shangla, and the 10.2MW Jabori project in Mansehra.

Secretary Energy and Power Nisar Ahmed disclosed the details while chairing a review meeting at PEDO House on the progress of seven ongoing hydropower projects in the province.

He said work had also been accelerated on a 40-kilometre transmission line along the Swat corridor, which is expected to be completed next year. Once completed, the transmission infrastructure will enable the sale of low-cost electricity to the province’s industrial sector, he added.

Briefing the meeting, Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO) Chief Executive Habibullah Shah said several large hydropower projects were under various stages of development.

These include the 300MW Balakot project in Mansehra, 157MW Madain project in Swat, 88MW Gabrial project in Kalam, 84MW Matiltan project in Swat, 69MW Lawi project in Chitral, and the 6.9MW Mujahideen hydropower project in Torghar.

The energy secretary expressed strong displeasure over slow progress on three flagship energy projects in Swat district, which are expected to collectively produce 330MW of electricity. He said deadlines had been set to begin power generation from these projects within the next two years.

“Any further delay will be unacceptable,” he warned, directing project directors to ensure completion within the stipulated timelines.

Ahmed emphasised teamwork among PEDO officials, saying the energy department was monitoring the physical progress of all ongoing projects on a daily basis through Gantt charts under the provincial government’s good governance roadmap.

He described the 40-kilometre-long 132/220kV transmission line project from Matiltan to Madain as critically important and directed that it be completed within the next year.

The secretary also instructed the newly appointed project director of the 300MW Balakot hydropower project to further accelerate work on what is the province’s largest energy scheme.

During the meeting, Ahmed issued additional directives aimed at improving transparency in PEDO’s administrative affairs.
