should pakistan cease trading then or what
IF this mission is PN trying to open the strait of Hormuz and shooting down Iranian drones and missiles, it’ll end up worse than ceasing trade through the strait.
If it’s just providing protection to Pakistani ships and in coordination with Iranians then there’s no issue.
Pakistan can’t afford another war.

Let's not chicken out.
They are payed to ensure Maritime security of Pakistan.
IRGC is now a days operating without any central command, any frustrated local commander can fire some drone at any target, so precautions are good to be taken.

This operation is focused on ensuring safe trade through international waters, nothing to do with Iranian territorial waters.
I don't think this is only against Iran. I am not even sure if this includes providing passage through SoH. It could because Iranians are now saying that only Israeli, US and EU flagged tankers will not be allowed.

I think the PN actions are more in line with threats of piracy against tankers. Oil on the high seas is an extremely valuable commodity right now given the short supplies and ensuring that the tankers that Pakistan has requisitioned make it to our ports has evidently become a strategic compulsion.

This means escorting PNSC and other requisitioned tankers to and from our ports in our sea lanes and littoral waters.
Both of these are correct.
There is also a perception to ensure for certain audiences that Pakistan is carrying out its pacts and is “a responsible global player”.

The centralized Iranian command has been made aware of Pakistan’s true stance in the conflict and so far they have not given any indication to show hostile intent or even unfriendly intent towards Pakistan.

*PAKISTAN NAVY LAUNCHES OPERATION MUHAFIZ-UL-BAHR TO SAFEGUARD MARITIME TRADE AND ENERGY LIFELINES*

In view of the evolving regional maritime security environment and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes, Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to counter multidimensional threats to national shipping and maritime trade. The initiative has been undertaken to ensure the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies and the security of Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs).

PN Escort operations are being conducted in close coordination with Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). Pakistan Navy is fully cognizant of the prevailing maritime situation and is actively monitoring and controlling the movement of merchant vessels to ensure their safe and secure transit.

With approximately 90% of Pakistan’s trade conducted via sea, the operation aims to ensure that vital sea routes remain safe, secure, and uninterrupted. Currently, PN ships are escorting 2 x Merchant Vessels, one of which is scheduled to arrive Karachi today.

Pakistan Navy remains fully prepared to respond emerging maritime security challenges and is committed to ensuring the safety of national shipping and regional maritime security.

Silent Navy's uncle's time to shine. Jokes apart shows how critical an operational navy is for the survival of the country.

Bear is mind with all kinds of navies prowling the water, announced and unannounced, this is a high stakes situation. And each of those navies has an incentive for a false flag operation.

The Iranis don't get to choose what Pakistan does for its own national interests. Being a supportive neighbour on non kinetic aspects is one thing, actively crossing red lines of national interest is a completely different ballgame.

I fear with how fragmented the Iranian command and control structure seems to be, this has a chance of devolving into a unintended flash point. Or worst Indians masquerading as others.

Why are we apologising for protecting our ships? Iran knows we had no part in the attack on it and we condemned it. If, despite that, they attack our shipping we should hit back with full force.

Innocent Pakistanis should not suffer economically because of US/Israeli actions.

What is the point of the Navy otherwise?

so if iran decides to attack pakistani ships, its better for pakistan to just commit economic suicide.

What does she keep talking about. If a drone or missile is fired towards a Pakistani navy vessel Pakistan has every right to respond in kind

So Pakistan should go to war with Iran if a Pakistani merchant ship is hit in the strait of Hormuz? What would be the economic loss if Pakistan avoids the strait for a month vs economic loss of starting a war with Iran? No one’s saying to cease trade completely forever. It’s about avoiding a war zone for a limited time so you don’t get dragged into the war. Maybe it’s a wake up call to the government to expand its strategic oil and gas reserves and look at diversifying inputs.
But as other posters said, this is likely in coordination with Iran anyways.
