British politician Jeremy Corbyn has voiced deep concern over the ongoing detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. Corbyn called for the release of all political prisoners worldwide, condemning Khan’s treatment as an affront to democratic rights.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Corbyn stated, "I remain deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of Imran Khan. His disgraceful treatment is an affront to the democratic rights of the people of Pakistan." He urged continued advocacy for the release of political prisoners everywhere.

The calls for Khan’s release have come from various international figures, including Richard Grenell, former US President Donald Trump’s nominee for special envoy, and former Congressman Matt Gaetz.

In October, over 60 Democratic US lawmakers urged President Joe Biden to pressure Pakistan to release Khan. A UN human rights working group has also stated that Khan’s detention violates international law.

What a great misfortune it is. What a great power the Pakistanis living abroad used to be for GHQ and Pakistan. This shameless general Asim munier has turned that power against himself. Today, the power has become so strong they going to drag Asim munier and his bich out of GHQ and Lahore.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has signalled that the party may revoke its deferred civil disobedience call if the government shows seriousness in addressing its demands during ongoing negotiations.

Speaking to a local news channel on Wednesday, Akram highlighted that PTI founder Imran Khan has firmly instructed party leaders not to compromise on two primary demands: the release of all political prisoners, including Khan himself, and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 incident.

Additionally, he said, Khan has directed Akram, Chairman Barrister Gohar, and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja to address global issues during these talks. After months of heightened political tensions, PTI and government representatives convened their first round of dialogue on Monday.

An Islamabad district and sessions court on Thursday granted bail to Bushra Bibi, the wife of PTI founder Imran Khan, in cases related to last month’s violent protest staged by the party.

On Nov 13, Imran issued a “final call” for nationwide protests on Nov 24, demanding the restoration of the PTI’s electoral mandate, the release of detained party members, and the reversal of the 26th Amendment which he said had strengthened a “dictatorial regime”.

Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Sahibzada Hamid Raza has said that the PTI will formally give the government time until January 31 to conclude ongoing negotiations.

After winning the polls in February, PTI-backed candidates faced problems joining any political party registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan. PTI founder Imran Khan sent his winning candidates in the national, KP and Punjab assemblies into the SIC, which was an ally of PTI.

Since Imran’s incarceration last year in several cases, PTI’s relations with the government and the establishment have deteriorated sharply, marked by protests that frequently escalated into violence amid state repression.

Following the turmoil, Imran established a five-member committee to hold talks with “anyone,” signalling a shift in PTI lawmakers’ stance in parliament. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee with ruling coalition members.

The first meeting between the government and PTI committees was held on Monday, marking the start of long-awaited negotiations to ease political tensions. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said that the ex-premier called for a time frame for the negotiations during which some progress should be made. In response, senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah stated that the government would “accommodate such a request”.

Flanked by Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan and PTI leader Asad Qaiser, Raza told a press conference outside Adiala Jail today that the party had settled on a January 31 deadline for the talks.

“The cut-off date for negotiations is January 31,” Raza said. “On January 2, when our committee meets the government to continue the negotiations, Omar Ayub will formally give them this deadline.”
